"However though Azog realizes that the armies cannot fight on two fronts and sends the rest of his army to Dale to cut them off. This forces Thranduil to retreat with Bard, Gandalf and Bilbo and a large portion of his army to the city, leaving the Dwarves to fend for themselves, and while killing a few Orcs along the way. Upon entering the city, he is dismounted, surrounded, but easily kills his assailants and continually participates in the battle, but is aghast at how much Elven blood has spilled in defence of a Dwarvern land and rather than warning Thorin, or helping Dain, he attempts to take advantage of the respite to pull out. Tauriel declares that he will not depart that the Dwarves will die if he leaves. To which he tells her that it doesn't matter the dwarves are mortal, to which he draws her bow and says that if his life is more important then of all the Dwarf people then their is no love in him to which he slices her bow and tells her what she feels for Kili is not real asking if she is ready to die for love and before having time to even strike at her, Legolas intervenes and strikes down Thranduil's sword and informs him he will have to kill his son if he wishes to slay her. Legolas turns to Tauriel and says he will go with her to which they then depart for Ravenhill, leaving Thranduil in shock. It is unknown if Thranduil departs or stays to aid the Dwarves. However, after the battle concludes he goes to Ravenhill alone to find Legolas and Tauriel. He runs into Legolas, who tells him he can't go back. Thranduil asks his son where he will go, but Legolas tells him he doesn't know. Thranduril advises Legolas to find the Dunedain, that there is a young ranger there, his father Arathorn was a good man, and will become great, his name in the wild was Strider and that his true name (Aragorn) was something he had to learn for himself, he also informs Legolas that his mother loved him more than anything else in this world, more then life. At this it is with a heavy heart he accepts Legolas's decision to be on his own, and lets him go. Legolas then leaves to go North. He then finds Tauriel weeping over Kili's body and she asks why love can hurt so much. Moved by the sight, along with the memory of his wife's death at Angmar's (The Witch King) hands, he tells her "Because it was real" and agrees with her plan to bury Kili. He is not seen afterwards, but it is safe to assume that after the funerals and burials, he departed for Mirkwood."
