Introduction to Alchemy
About Ingredients
Each ingredient has 4 effects, the magnitude and monetary value for each effect can vary and will not be shown in-game.

At first you will not know any effects associated with an herb.

You can discover the first effect by consuming the ingredient (by taking the experimenter perk, you can learn up to all of them this way). However, you will not be able to sell your discoveries if you do this. You can also be severely injured by eating too many poisonous ingredients, especially early on in your play-through.

A more profitable and safer way to discover the effects is to use that ingredient in a potion. Any potions or poisons you create that use an herb's unknown effect will discover that effect on the herb. The resulting potion can be later used or sold for profit.

About Crafting Potions and Poisons
First you find an alchemy crafting table.
(Some mods add other options for crafting such as a carriable pestle and mortar).

The crafting menu will open, allowing you to craft a potion out of 2 or 3 ingredients. Unlike Morrowind, a potion will never fail to be created, unless none of the ingredients share an effect.

Any combination of herbs that share at least 1 effect will create a potion or poison. It is possible to accidentally create 'junk' potions when crafting. Such potions will have both negative and positive effects in the same potion or poison. Junk potions typically sell well as pricing is not based on practicality, but by a value from each effect. Some junk potions can still be viable for use if the negative component is offset by the ease of acquisition for an ingredient combination.

DLC
Each DLC added new ingredients of varying usefulness. Hearthfire added the ability for you to grow certain vanilla ingredients and fish at your homestead, making them much more plentiful for the serious potion maker.

Windstad Manor is the most useful location for the budding alchemist to set up home due to the unique fish hatchery which puts fish and dragonfly ingredients at your fingertips. I recommend getting the greenhouse wing as a fully furnished greenhouse will spawn bees, lunar moths, torchbugs, blue butterflies, and monarch butterflies.

Mods
Mods can change the properties of ingredients, add new ingredients, or change the way alchemy works. It is beyond the scope of this guide to list every change that every mod makes, however, I will be glad to note any major changes from very popular mods.

Unofficial Hearthfire Patch & Unofficial Skyrim Legendery Edition Patch (USLEEP) make a notable change to Salmon Roe, determining that the profit and magnitude values for the ingredient were erroneous, they nerfed the ingredient to bring it in line with other ingredients. With this patch installed, it is no longer an insane money-making and speed levelling ingredient, nor an incredibly long water breathing component.

Other Notes
Salmon Roe is harvested from Salmon, however, the salmon need to be jumping upstream or killed while swimming, a shout will do it. Simply grabbing a swimming Salmon will not gather Roe.

Ravage effects damage both the current and maximum value for health, stamina or magicka.
Maximizing your potions
There are a number of ways that you can increase the strength of your potions and poisons.

Perks
The most obvious is of course by taking perks in the alchemy tree:
  • Each rank in the Alchemist perk will increase the strength of the resulting potion by 20% up to 100%.
  • Physician makes restorative potions 25% stronger.
  • Benefactor makes potions with positive effects 25% stronger.
  • Poisoner makes poisons 25% stronger.
  • Concentrated poison lets your poisons hit a second time, which can result in a big damage increase.
  • Purity is arguably useful. On the one hand, you can remove negative effects from potions, reducing the cons to certain combinations, On the other hand, losing those effects will de-value certain potion combinations.
  • Green Thumb wont make your potions any more useful or any more effective, but it will mean less harvesting from the world, possibly saving you time.

Enchanting
The next most common augmentation to alchemy comes through Enchanting.
Once you have unlocked the 'Fortify Alchemy' enchantment, you can place this enchantment on:
  • Headgear
  • Gloves/Bracers
  • Rings
  • Necklaces
Mods may add other clothing options, such as cloaks which may or may not be enchantable.
Don't forget to take a drink of a 'Fortify Enchanting' Potion before enchanting. Unlike Oblivion and Morrowind, the efficacy of the enchantment is not limited by the quality of the item you enchant, a dragonscale helm enchants as well as a ragged cap.

Other Effects
One last augment comes from the 'Seeker of Shadows' effect, obtainable through the Dragonborn DLC, this increases the efficacy of all 'stealth' skills by 10% (which includes alchemy).

Glitches
I do not condone the use of glitches in Skyrim, use at your own risk.
Both these glitches are fixed in the 'Unofficial Skyrim Patch' and 'USLEEP'.

There are a few glitches that can be utilized to further augment your potions:
You can equip a Falmer helmet and a circlet at the same time, this allows you to have an extra fortify alchemy enchantment active.

The second glitch can be used to make almost infinitely powerful potions.
In the un-modded game, Fortify Restoration potions also increase the efficacy of 'Fortify Skill' effects, including those from enchantments. Drink a 'Fortify Restoration' potion then equip your alchemy gear, make a new, stronger fortify restoration then remove your gear. Drink the new stronger restoration potion and re-equip your gear. This will allow you to make an even stronger potion. Repeat as many times as desired. You can also make a super-strong fortify enchanting potion while you're there to vastly increase the strength of any new enchantments, allowing you to make stronger fortify alchemy armor.
This glitch can result in super-powered equipment very early in the game, making all skill progression and levelling utterly irrelevant. As such, I prefer not to use this glitch (personally, I use the unofficial patches anyway as they fix a lot of quest bugs).
Useful Recipes - Replenishing Health, Mana, & Stamina
In this section I will list some useful recipes and why I picked those ingredients for each. Ingredients marked with an * are growable.

The healing potion also fortifies health, despite using only 2 ingredients.

Regenerate Magicka 2
Regenerate Magicka
Salt Pile
Garlic

The Magicka potion is fully growable, making it easy to restock.
The regenerate magicka potion can be made with growable ingredients, assuming you have a fishery for Salmon Roe. There is a minor caveat in that you may be better off using Salmon Roe in levelling or profit if you do not have the unofficial patches installed. If you don't mind losing the fortify magicka component, you can swap a component out for salt or garlic, neither are growable, but they are plentiful.

Stamina Potion 2

Regenerate Stamina
Regenerate Stamina
Scaly Pholiota*
Mora Tapinella*

The only growable ingredient that restores stamina is Purple Mountain Flower. Other ingredients, such as bees, torchbugs and histcarp can be acquired if you have a fully furnished greenhouse or a fish hatchery. Due to no ingredient appearing on both the Regenerate Stamina List and the Fortify Stamina List, we cannot combine the two effects into one potion with the 3 ingredient limit that Skyrim imposes on us.

You could combine a fortify Stamina effect with a restore stamina effect, but you'll end up wasting ingredients as any application of fortify stamina past the first will be useless. Unlike with the health potion you can only get the two effects into one potion with two ingredients if you use Large Antlers, an ingredient you cannot grow and one I always struggle to maintain a supply of. Your experience may vary.

Our healing potion makes a return here since the fortify health or restore health attribute is a free bonus to whichever of the two uses we currently seek. This means more versatility for our carry weight with no additional ingredient cost.
The Fortify Magicka Potion is fully growable, add a piece of garlic to make it both fortify and regenerate. As those two effects last a while, it is less wasteful to combine regenerate and fortify together. It rarely hurts to have both at once, and it would be wasteful to combine either with a restore potion that you may end up chugging multiple times in a short space of time.
Useful Recipes - Fortifying Skills
These recipes are all about bolstering skills. An emphasis is placed on ingredients you can grow, ingredients you can find with a homestead, and ingredients that are common. Hopefully, this will minimize the need to hunt down or buy ingredients. Due to the number of skills here, I will include notes on each recipe in the table.

I usually make some combination resist fire and frost potions, to reduce damage from dragons. I usually make a small amount of seperate resist lightning potions as I require them less often. The majority of lightning damage dealers can be rendered helpless with a paralysis poison, but the same is not true of dragons who will use frost or fire damage until you reach the point where they're a joke. Resisting poison can be useful against creatures like chaurus.

Note: Though much less common, replacing 'Deathbell' with the fish, 'River Betty', will make the 'Damage Health' effect stronger. River betty does not carry the weakness to poison effect, so it cannot be used with the poisons that require it.

Fly Amanita + Dragon's Tongue = Fire resistance + Two handed
Slaughterfish Scales + Thistle Branch = Frost resistance + Heavy armor
For the mage killer knights out there

@The Bert Bandit. Your recipe checks out as better than the hanging moss, bear claw, giants toe recipe I had and have replaced by yours now.

However the Salmon Roe, Chickens Egg, Garlic recipe should still yield about 2.5X the amount of XP.
Though this does depend on no mod being installed that has decided that the value multiplier of Salmon Roe's water breathing effect is wrong.

giants toes and wheat are the best way to level up :dos2skull:

Awesome Guide!
This would have been a lifesaver if I would have had this a few years ago. By now I can't play without CACO which unfortunately nullifies all guides. :/
Still I hope this will get more people to use alchemy as its one of the most underestimated things in Skyrim.

@doctor G As you progress through the story, you will come across a variety of books which will offer one of several augmentations to your skills. Look for the one with the 'seeker of shadows' effect.
Doctor G Apr 5, 2020 @ 1:09pm
There is a few skill boosters as well, such as the book from the DLC , does not say how to use it do to 100s of youtube vids on it
Bob Mar 28, 2020 @ 5:32am
get the "Wear Circlets with Hoods" mod and you can wear two Alchemy enchanted headpieces.
