Guide to get Shrak for Quake working
De Prowbar
A way to get Shrak for Quake running properly (for FREE!). This is my first guide. Feel free to leave any suggestions/tips. Note: This works 100% for the DirectQ engine.

1. Downloading Shrak for Quake (and more!)
Disclaimer:
this is the way I've downloaded Shrak. Yes, its not the best way, but don't go witchhunt me because I downloaded something 'illegal'. This is an expansion pack from 1997. Old enough to be downloaded for free (at least in my opinion)
If you really are against illegal downloading, go try and find a physical copy of the game (if you don't already own one). A good place to look is on Ebay or Amazon, but the prices for these packs are sky high (don't go and pay more than 10 dollars, trust me)

Shrak download
There are a few sites that have downloads for Shrak, but the one I used to download is called firedrop.com.
Link to the download: (around 12 MB) https://firedrop.com/e0d16e5ff6600ae0
You will get the files in a zip folder.

Download for the free V2 Patch (not needed, you can skip this step if you want)
This is a free patch provided by Quantum Axcess, which apparently adds new features and fixes bugs. I haven't tested Shrak without this patch, so I advise you download this :)

I downloaded this patch from the official website for Shrak
Link: http://shrak.com/downloads.html
Files come in a zip folder.

Downloading the soundtrack
I found a few soundtracks online, but these all come in .ogg or .wav format. I will provide you with the links to the sites I downloaded the soundtracks from, but I converted them all to .mp3 formats. This worked better for me (and for the sourceport I use, DirectQ)

Download for the soundtrack (in .wav): http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-mod-releases/finished-works/9785-original-high-quality-cd-music-quake-mission-packs.html

Its a pretty large download, since they are soundfiles. (around 600 MB I believe)

Again, shoutout to the guy who put up these soundtracks!

Download for the soundtracks I converted (in .mp3 format): http://www.filedropper.com/music_22
The file is called music.rar.
I used Filedropper to upload these files. There are no viruses in it. If you don't trust me, download the .wav soundtracks and convert them to .mp3 yourself.

Note: my soundtracks come in a zip file, with the correct path in it. (Path is mentioned in the setup section aswell)

Downloading DirectQ
Link: https://www.quaddicted.com/files/engines/directq/

Note: I used version 1.9.0. I advise you do the same, since my method works properly on this version. (and its the newest version)

Alright, that should be all for the downloads!

Proceed to ze next section!
2. Setting up Shrak for Quake
Ok, so now that we have all files downloaded, its time to make it into a working expansion pack!

First step:
The first step is to create a folder called shrak, or shrak_for_quake, whatever you want. Put it on your desktop so that you can easily find it (atleast I hope so :P)
This will be your main folder that will be placed into your quake folder. All files go into this folder. Follow the steps, and you might get it working!

Put all of your zips you downloaded (shrak related) into this folder aswell. It'll make life a lot easier.

Second step:
Ok, so now that you have all that done, open the Shrak For Quake (1997) (Quantum Axcess) zip.
In there, you'll find all sorts of files.
In there, there are 3 shrak folders (for some reason). Open them and eventually you'll find a
pak0.pak file.
Drag and drop this file (pak0.pak) into your main shrak folder!

Third step:
Open the music zip file I provided you with (for the converted soundtrack users, look at the note)
In the music.zip file, the path is already correct.
Drag and drop the music folder into your main shrak folder.

Note: (skip this when you've downloaded my .mp3 soundtracks)
Each track must be called track00x (x is a number here for the soundtrack, ranging from track002 to track014).
When all that is done, put the soundtracks into a folder called 'music'.
Then you are good to go!
Drag and drop the music folder into your main shrak folder.

Fourth step:
Open the shrak_texturefix zip (which is the mini patch)
Drag and drop the maps folder into your main shrak folder.

Fifth step: (skip this step if you want to play version 1, but I can't guarantee if it works)
Open the shrak_v2 zip (which is the official shrak v2 patch)
Drag and drop the contents into your main shrak folder.

Congratulations! You have completed all the steps in this section! Move on to the next section to get Shrak up and Running!
3. The Final Steps!
If everything went alright, you should have ended up with a shrak main folder with these contents:
maps
music
AUTOEXEC
pak0
PAK1 (not on the v1 version)
(and all the zips)

Now, to run Shrak, go set up DirectQ first. Just drag and drop the contents of the directq excecutable into your main Quake folder and you're good to go!

Tip: if you want to use DirectQ as your default Steam Quake (so it opens directq when you run Quake instead of Winquake) is to rename DirectQ to Winquake.

Drop your main Shrak folder into your main Quake folder. (not in the Id1 or id1 folder, just the main quake folder!)

Ok, all the hard work is done :D

But, Prowbar, you say, I want to play Shrak!
Well then, lets do that, shall we?

If you run DirectQ through Steam, use this:
Right click on Quake (in your steam library), go to properties, set launch options.
In the launch options, type: -game (name of the main shrak folder) for example: -game shrak
Run Quake and voila! Shrak!

If you run Quake without Steam, use this:
Make a shortcut of Quake (the program, not the folder)
Go to properties, and there you will see something like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Quake\Winquake.exe" (or whatever sourceport you use)

Click on this line, and go to the end. At the end, type: -game (name of the main shrak folder) For example: -game shrak

You should end up with something like:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Quake\Winquake.exe" -game shrak (or whatever sourceport you use)

Run your shortcut, and there ya go! Shrak!

Hopefully it all works! Feel free to ask me any questions or leave suggestions, criticism, spelling errors and whatnot. Do keep in mind that this is my first guide.

Tip
In various Shrak levels you will come across a 'Utility Vest'. This item, when picked up, is not armor, but it gives you 3 items: 5 flares, 5 proximity mines and 5 claws.

Each item does what it says:
The (thrown) flares are handy for lighting up darker areas (good for secrets)
The proximity mines have a ridicolous blast range and work both as prox mines but also as grenades.
The claws are interesting. They pull you towards an item/monster when thrown.

You can switch through these items by pressing the '1' key.

Thanks for your time and happy Shraking!

I had an error when entering the portal to the map after Wreck Age. After I get through the platforms and enter the portal I get an unhandled exception error then freeze. I'm using DirectQ got through the levels just fine.

I'm not sure. I like DirectQ so that is what I used.
Playing through Shrak myself again today, but had an error on map 2. Let me know if you have that same error.

It worked! Thanks dude. Tried this in Quakespasm first since that was what I was using on steam already and it had all white textures but tried it in DirectQ and it worked. Weird, guess it doesnt like QS?

Hello,

Here is the updated link:
http://www.filedropper.com/quakeshrak

The website might seem a bit untrustworthy but I've had great success with it.

Feel free to ask if you need more help.
