UNDERSTANDING HATS

== NOTES ==

- Hats must be shot off the head of the opponent and collected in a winning game. Collecting the hat but failing to finish the level will not award you the hat.
- Hats that are not yet part of your collection will pulse with light while they lay on the ground. The same effect that uncollected loot bags have.
- Not all opponents wear hats. BeamGolems, Dragoons, and the Vectron Boss do not have hats. Vectron bombs spawned by VectronBombDeployer do not have hats, although the BombDeployer itself does. While BeamGolems do not wear a common hat, they are capable of spawning some rare hats.

== BASE HAT CLASSES ==

Common - Officially referred to as just "Hat", common is the standard hat attributed to an enemy. A type of enemy will spawn with this hat by default unless overwritten by another class of hat.
Uncommon - A hat that will always spawn on a specific enemy or group of enemies but only during a specific level.
Vanity - Purchased from a shop.
Rare - Randomly spawned at a very low chance. Overwrites Common and Uncommon hats.

== OTHER HAT CLASSES ==

Hatful - Applies to all hats from the Hatful Eight + 2 DLC.
Ambassador - Winners of the July 2016 Hat Contest.

== WORK AROUND ==

- For those who choose not to participate in social media, there exists a work around involving tweaking an .xml file in the SteamWorld Heist save file.

- Navigate to your save-file.

 (Harddrive, probably C:) -> Users -> (Profile) -> My Documents -> My Games -> SteamWorld Heist. 

- You'll find 1-2 config files, 1-3 .dat files (each relating to save slot 0/1/2) and Settings.xml.
- Right-click settings.xml and select "Edit".
- Ctrl-F and type "Claim" to find the strings;

- While technically not a hat, the state of being hatless is an aesthetic option people probably take for granted.

FARMING ADVICE

General:
- Always farm hats on Elite difficulty. The higher the difficulty, the larger the enemy quantity, the more chances of a rare hat spawning.
- Use the Quit function to revert back a turn in case you miss your shot and kill the target. Do not press Abort Mission, press QUIT. This is also a required tactic for the Sprinting strategy, else you'll be overwhelmed by all of the activated enemies.
- Hat spawns are decided on level start, not on when you open a room. You can safely use the above method upon room breach without risking the hat spawn. Feel free to wind back a turn and get your lads into a good position or to better take control of the level. Remember finding the hat is only half the battle, you still need to grab it and complete the level.
- Hats will despawn after a time. This isn't truly based on time or turns, but rather the number of hats and body parts scattered on the ground. If you find a rare hat, do not leave it lying on the floor for too long.

Farming reinforcements:
- Use penetrating weapons so single characters can watch doors by themselves. Blue Moon (rare assault) and Killing Joke (DLC Epic Swag from Act 3) are great candidates. Valentine's Piercing Shot and Fen's Laser are great as well.
- Both Fen and Billy can restore health "infinitely" making them good candidates for extended farming.
- The evacuation door will never spawn reinforcements. Don't bother guarding it.
- Destroy all sources of cover and ranged reinforcements will move significantly less and group together significantly more.

Sprinting
- Equip fast characters with +Movement items. Bust open as many doors as you can to reveal as many enemies as you can. Check for rare hats and then abort mission.
- Exceptional +Movement items: Turbo Overheater, Speed Boots MKIII, Jump Pack.
- +Move and +Sprint are different. +Move adds orange moves. +Sprint adds blue moves.

- Payroll's Wheel'n'Deal allows him to open two doors in one session of movement (once during the orange move phase and the second during the sprint phase) making him the best choice for sprinter. Note there seems to be an unusual bug with this. If you are trying to open a door during the sprint phase but the door is slightly above Payroll due to it being on an upward slope, he won't be able to open the door.
- Dora's Boot-Boost allows her to sprint over open rooms, making her the second best choice for sprinter.

- Look at the minimap. You want to open the largest rooms as quickly as possible to reveal as many enemies as possible, so don't bother heading to doors that clearly only lead to small hallways or treasure rooms.
- Don't bother killing enemies. You should be able to reveal 80% of the map by the end of the second turn. Anything longer than two turns and you'll be too overwhelmed to collect the hat and finish the level.
- Doors with an orange V marker above them indicate mission-progress areas. Most of the time these are boss rooms, regrouping rooms or contain NPC's. For the most part, they aren't areas you care about looking in.

As the enemies names are never specifically mentioned in-game, there may be some confusion over what enemy you're looking for when browsing the Rare hats list. Use this bestiary as a quick reference guide if you're not sure who is what and when is why.

- Names in brackets ( ) are unofficially added on by me in case the clarity is needed up in the Rare Hats section. Some enemies use the same folder and file, so whether or not they share the same hat pool remains to be seen.

HAT ACHIEVEMENTS

- The hats listed are THE ONLY ONES that will work for the achievement. I guarantee no others will work. I relocked the achievements using SAM, wore two of the required hats, and then tried every single hat in the game as the third, taking note of which hats unlocked the achievement.
- You need three hats for each achievement, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Well actually you can wear four hats, it just won't make a difference.
- You can't use the same hat on multiple party members. It has to be three different hats.
- Bold names are DLC.

- Doesn't really count as a hat combo since it explicitly states the requirements in the achievement description, but I figured someone might find the advice useful.
- Weapons aren't like hats in how they're found. Weapons have tiers, and only by playing maps that give out that tier of weapon will you ever find it. They also come from loot bags and not enemy heads, so if you only want to farm the weapon, drop the difficulty to casual. You'll have less enemies to deal with and won't need to think about character positioning. There are multiple rare weapons and items in each tier so don't be discouraged when your purple bags end up being something else.

BONUS

Hats or Not?
Simply find it and confirm it, and then give us a shout out. Bear in mind some hat assets are cut content, some are NPC-only, and some aren't actually hats at all. The asset list contains a lot of body parts which may look like hats.

- The bottom hat belongs to Small Gear Cogburn, the weapon trader. I may be wrong and it could be a rare that's eluded the list, but I have my doubts!


Cut character?
- The top-most hat seems to belong to a cut character. I've glued him together with a body piece that seems to fit him but there are simply too many arms and legs to choose from so for now, he's limbless.

DIY
- If you want to look at these files yourself, just navigate to your steam folder where your games are saved. For me it's;

SteamLibrary -> SteamApps -> Common -> SteamWorld Heist -> Bundle 

I pulled the hat checklist from Atlases -> CharactersCommon and the enemy names from the Characters folder. This image below is the raw CharactersCommon image.


And this is it after i've taken out what I believe to be all of the hats.








Interestingly, there are some HD images of hats, but it's not even close to being all of them. Not even the DLC folder shows all of it's applicable hats. Disappointing, but I guess that would have been too easy!

UPD: I got the last hat in SWH. Found it in "Safe & secure" mission.

Hello there author. I would like to get some help from you on how to get the Cowbot hat quicker.

I've personally have been trying to get it on "Safe & secure" mission, since (as i've seen) it has 100% chance of spawning a scrappers sniper, however it only spawns 1 per mission on every difficuly. If there's a mission with more scrapper snipers or if they can, possibly, spawn from the doors on some mission i would like to know.

Also I have every hat except Cowbot hat (& mustache but they're unobtainable).

I only need the Greasy Blue Hat to get my last achievement. Any tips on where to best farm reinforcements of Scrapper Swabs? I would've thought The Average Escape to be a great place, with its high threat level that occasionally spawns 6 enemies at once, but despite of farming for like hour, I haven't seen a single hat other than Long-Termer. Shouldn't rare hats overwrite this uncommon hat? Or do Scrapper rares only appear in Act 1?
