How to make a good level
Por Sosven
To be honest, I'm not a great builder/level creator myself, But I do know most of the things, but I'm not an expert at level creating but I've seen alot, and I mean a LOT of other levels that is just made in 5 minutes. Wich means it's impossible to find a good level, when you only find "bad" levels. But they might actually try, so remember, one level that one person can make, can be terrible, but the next one might be epic, everyone deserves to be a good builder. That's why I hope that I can possibly teach you some things in the editor. (This guide was started in 2.0, so I'm trying to update it, but I cannot update the pictures alredy taken).

NOTE: Some of the pictures had REALLLY bad quality! I don't know why, but I hope you can still see what's going on.

Starting a level
First up, open Geomatry Dash, simple. Then click the button to the right, then you should get a menu that looks like this:
Then click the "Create". If you did that right, you will get another menu. Just click the button that says "New" and it should look like this:
So, now let's talk about the basics. You can click the "Unamed 0" box to give your level a name, but you might wanna do that after you make the level, and get some ideas, but if you have the perfect name for your level, just type it in. Same with the description of the level. You don't need to have one, but it might explain your level, or just make other people want to play it. So there is 2 main buttons you wanna care about first. The "creator level button", that gives you acces to edit your level, and the playtest button. And if you want to delete your level, click the big red X in your right top corner. Under that, you got the "Help" button to open the editor guide... But you can still use this if you want to. Under THAT we got the copy level button, and as well, under that we got the "move to top" button, wich will move your level to the top of your levels, if that makes sense. Now, just click the button to the left, and you should get this "menu" up:
Different Buttons
There are many different buttons in the editor. Let's start with the song-test button in the top left corner, under the undo/redo buttons. It explains itself, it tests the music with a guideline following the current speed, helps to make an action.
Under that, we got the playtest button. Works like the song-test button, but different. It's your character! you can jump, or whatever you need to do (depending on what gamemode you are using). The music will play, + there is a green line coming out of you. This is really useful for making actions happening, and you don't know where your character will end up.
Then we got the 2 zoom buttons, I don't think they need any explination.
To the top, we got the scroll line... thing. by dragging it to left or right, can you get around your level easy, except up/down.
to the top right corner, we got the pause button. No explination needed.
Now comes the hardest part to explain: THE SLIDES.
Slides is the purple arrows in your buttom right corner, above the green buttons. They make it more easy to work on objects behind each other... like this:
Now, under THAT we got the 4 green buttons.
  • Swipe - Select multiple objects
  • Rotate - Rotate an object
  • Free Move - Move an object by free-dragging
  • Snap - (Sorry, I don't know what this does)
Now, if you're playing on a laptop or a mac, you can use the 1, 2 and 3 numbers to switch from:
  • Build - Build gameplay
  • Select - Select objects to delete, move or set action (actions using move, pulse etc.)
  • Delete delete selected objects.
When you are on the Build catagory, there is (so far) 13 different build catagories:
  • Blocks
  • "Slabs"
  • Lines (Lines that you can walk on, used on different objects that doesn't have any lines)
  • Diagonal Blocks (I didn't have any better name)
  • Spikes, Goo, Fake Spikes etc.
  • 3D Lines
  • Extras (Jump pads, Dragons, Text etc.)
  • Details (Fading)
  • Other Details
  • Details (Details that gets bigger/smaller depending on the music)
  • Gears, Spike ball, Neon Spikeballs etc.
  • BG (Used to change background, ground etc. ingame)
  • Custom Things (Different things that you can add in future use)
These can be mixed together, or used to make something cool! Like a creepy face, with spikes as teeth, and you have to jump over them..? It's up to you! You can make pretty much anything!
Now as you know the buttons, let's start at some basics of level creating.
Getting Started (Music)
Now as you're in the level, let's set some settings!
Sometime, you must do this, so why don't just do it at the beginning? I useally start with finding a good song. So click the "options" button in your right top corner that looks like gears, then it should look like this:
There are 2 main options.
This guide was made in 2.0, so some of these facts might not be correct in the future.

1) Normal - The basic music in geomatry dash: (So far, there is 20 different soundtracks.)
  • No download required
  • Guidelines automaticly generated (lines in the editor that helps you make gameplay to the level matching the music)
  • Well-known from experienced geomatry dash players (helps if there is an action happening)
2) Custom - Custom songs made from other players in
Newgrounds[www.newgrounds.com]
  • Download Required (if the player haven't alredy downloaded the song)
  • Guidelines is not automaticly created
  • If the song isn't popular/well known, they might not know when different actions happens, but you can possibly find an epic song matching your level! (Never make the level before you add music!)
So alot of people make the level before they add music. This is a VERY bad idea! The music won't match up wich might result in a thumbs down! However, if you add the music before the level, and make it how the music is... it's a 90% chance of getting a thumbs up! And how more likes/thumbs ups you have, more players will play it and eventually like it! Except if you make something like this:
I will teach you how to make a 100% better level. Now, let's set the settings.
So, if you want a normal/basic song, find the song you want by clicking the arrows in the bottom box to find the perfect song!
But if you want a CUSTOM song from Newgrounds[www.newgrounds.com]
OR you can use a song that you have alredy downloaded from another level. First, click the "Custom" button.
Click the "Select Custom Song" button and you will get this menu:
So, if you found a good song on Newgrounds[www.newgrounds.com] look for the song ID and paste it into the "ID-box".
But if you've alredy downloaded a song that you think is perfect, click the "Saved" Button, then another menu will pop up:
(The different song names depends on what type of song you download and when you downloaded it)
To make sure it's the correct song, click the blue button to hear the song. When you find your epic song, click "Use" , and it should get gray and say "In Use", that means you've done everything right!
Now, click the purple arrow in your top left corner, and you should get back to this menu, with your song:
You might wanna have a fade-out. A fade-out makes the song stop in a 1-second fade when you complete the level.
Click the button that looks like gears in the top right corner, and you should get this menu:
Except everything will be blank. Click the button that says "fade out". And you can also set the start offset, where in the song it will start playing. You can also make it fade in.
Now, click the big X in the top left corner, and you will get back to this menu:
That's pretty much it! To close the menu, simply just click "OK" and you will get back to the editor!

Getting Started (Color channels + gamemodes)
So after you've added the song, let's set some more settings to get a perfect start. By doing this in the settings, will make you start in a gamemode without placing a portal. Now, get back to your settings menu by clicking the top right gears button. Everything you need to know is in this menu, except some different settings...
Let's say you want the middle speed, and start as a wave. In the left side of the menu, you have 4 different speed choices.
  • Orange = Slow
  • Blue = Normal
  • Green = Middle Speed
  • Purple = Fast
There are 6 different gamemodes as well, over the song-box.
  • Cube - Click to jump.
  • Ship/Flight - Hold to fly up, release to fly down.
  • Ball - Click to change gravity.
  • UFO - Click to jump in mid-air.
  • Wave - Hold to zig zag.
  • Robot - Hold to jump higher (depending on how long you hold it.)
  • Spider - Click to teleport in opposite gravity to an object.
I selected the middle speed and the wave. I will show you how you can make different gameplays to the different gamemodes.
Now, let's talk about some Color Channels! Color channels is the different colors in objects, details etc. You can access this menu from different places, but this is the most easy way. Click the "More" button in the top right corner, and you should get this menu:
Click any number! (The basic number, 1, is the color that most details will be set to, otherwise, they will be set to "Player color 1-2" or blending (blending is a color "mix" with the background color) So I would use number 1 as a good color. I love the color blue, so I want the basic detail color to be blue, it's really easy to use the color system. You can also change the opacity:
Now, click "OK", and you will get back to this menu:
Let's talk about some background colors! There are multiple types of "backgrounds":
  • Background
  • Ground
  • Ground 2 (Used for 3D grounds, added in 2.0)
  • Line (The line over the ground)
  • Object(s)
  • 3D Lines (If you decide to make a 3D platfrom)
In the top box, you can see 6 different color "backgrounds". The basic colors is blue. So, let's find a good background! Click the top right box that says "BG".
I choosed the 3D one (It only looks 3D, same as the TOE (Theory of everything) 2 background.)
Then, click "OK". let's select a ground! Click the button under the background button that says "G". I choosed the 3D floor, if you choose a 3D floor, you need to set 2 different colors.
Back to the top box with the "background" colors. Let's say you want a red background, click the "BG" button, as when you did the color channel, select your color, I wanted red, so I choosed red:
Click "OK", then you can do the same with the ground 1-2, line, objects and 3D lines. (3D lines isn't needed if you won't use them, they look good as white, the default color)
This is the layout I ended up with:
Now, click "OK" again, and you are back in the editor!
That's pretty much it.
Basic Gameplay + building (Cube)
So, it's hard to explain all the billions of the different "editor posibilities" that you can create, so I've only taken the ones that I thought was the best, or you can possibly learn multiple... OR you can get ideas to create on your own!

So, let's start with some first-level-creations (The different gameplays in the first levels.)
Now, the most importiant thing in level editing with gameplay blocks, is to make the lines match.
If you want to make a "Stereo Madness" gameplay, go to the build catagory, and choose the first one, Blocks (When you enter the Build catagory, it's automaticly set to it the first time you use it.) Then you should get this little GUI in the bottom:
So, there is multiple ways to do it, but you will learn later... Let's do the basic way! Click the object you want to use. So, we will be using the objects from 2-9. Select the object matching the lines, I made it like this:
But you can make something like this if you want:
Whatever you do, make sure it doesn't end up... like one of these failures:
Spamming spikes, jump pads jump orbs, or portals:
When changing gravity, making obvius space for flying to the moon:
Making object-lines not match:
Of course these are common mistakes everyone can make, but if you find'm, fix'm.
Now, there is lots of other blocks to check out. Next is blocks that doesn't have any "lines".
Like the blocks moslty used in 1.9-2.0+ blocks. But it's really easy to fix it! So, let's say you want to make a "Deadlocked" castle desgin! WARNING: This is not anything a new player should try, this is the last bit in this "catagory", so you can skip without missing anything importiant, unless you're a builder that know where things is. First, find the castle building.. blocks by clicking the blue arrows next to the object box. Once you find it, place a few down as you want your gameplay.
Now, let's make it look like a castle by making it look like it's a circle kind of castle. Go to the 8th. tab from the left, what I call the "Fading Objects", select the "Fading Neon" and place it on side of a castle-object. Before you place more or de-select it, click the "Edit Object" on the right side, and you will get to this menu, click "Next Free" in the bottom left corner, and click the white box in the bottom right corner:
You know how to use the color system, right? Select a completely black color:
Click "OK" twice, and you can start copying+pasting it on the other sides.. of the castle objects. Now as you have done that on all the object (sides), let's start to put the lines! Click the 3rd tab from the left and find a straight line. Now, place it on TOP (or UNDER if there is open space under) a castle-object. You don't need to do anything with it, unless you want to change the color, do the same as you did with the "Fading Neon". Now, there might be enough space for people to get through them, So, let's make some invisible lines! First, grab another line, and rotate it to the sides where there is a posibility to "cheat". Click "Edit Object" and you know, select a new color channel by clicking "Next Free", select a white box, and now, drag the Opacity to 0:
Click "OK" twice again, and set the lines to the "cheating areas".
That's pretty much it!
Basic Gameplay (Wave)
I love waves in Geomatry Dash. So why don't make some gameplay to it? So, you hold to "zig-zag" up, and release to go down, if that makes sense. So, that's why we will be using the diagonal blocks... or whatever you call'm. Select the 4th tab from the left, and select a diagonal block, and make something zig-zag like this:
Remember, you can of course add straight gameplay, but it makes it a lot harder.
Basic Gameplay (Ball)
This is pretty simple, click to change gravity. You can make different types of gameplay, let me show you some examples:
Madness:
Theory Of Everything 2 Themed (Kinda)
Clutterfunk themed (Kinda)
Basic Gameplay (Flight)
Really basic, hold to fly up, release to fly down.
You can make different types of gameplay on this one. Let me show you some examples:
Straight flying:
Wave Flying:
Dogde The Gears:
Basic Gameplay (UFO)
Simply click to bounce like flappy bird! You can actually make flappy bird! Let me show you some examples:
Flappy UFO:
UFO Cube:
Basic Gameplay (Robot)
It's almost the same as the cube, but you are a robot, and can jump higher, depends on how long you hold it. There isn't many differences than the cube, so I think you don't need any examples. But you can make very hard timing-jumps! Like only 0.1% chance of you holding it correct (if that makes sense.)
Basic Gameplay (Spider)
The spider is my favourite gamemode. It works the same way as the ball, but it teleports (in the opposite gravity) instead of slowly doing it. There are bugs with it at the moment, but I'm sure they will fix it in the future. It's a pretty new gamemode, so I guess that makes sense. There isn't many differences from the ball gamemode, so I don't think you need any examples.
Verifying a level
When I'm done making a level, I always check I got most of these actions:
  • Background changes
  • Different gamemodes
  • Different block types
  • Lines matches + no obvius glitches/cheating
But I ALWAYS think of this: "What could make my level EVEN better?", think of that when you are done, because you can always add more! The limit is 40k objects (you can even upgrade to 80k, but that is unstable on some devices), but you should be fine. And if you struggle with something, you can always find it on YouTube. Anyway, here is a list over what you need to do:

1. Finish the level
2. Save and exit the level (Fill out the name and the description if you haven't alredy)
3. Click the red "Publish" button to the right close to the middle
4. If you want to allow them to copy your level, or if they need a password, click the top right "Options" button
5. Click "Allow Copy", and if you want them to type a password, click "Password Required" and then click "Enter Password", enter the password and click "OK".
6. Exit the "password" menu, choose stars (difficulty)
7. PUBLISH THE LEVEL!

PS: The owners of geomatry dash can use your level in any way.
Also, the level is based on level likes, so make sure to make something good. And they can choose the stars/rating/difficulty that they think is correct.
Extra
Hey! I just wanted to tell you something before you leave:
This guide wasn't made for EPIC level editors, it was made for people who didn't completely understand how the level editor works. If you want a "part 2" (a level editor guide with a more detailed (experienced) guide, please leave a comment :)

lokayl and Flinagus, I DID mention that in the note. It's not my fault and is caused by movement.
