Starting out
Early game you have 10 inventory slots, you won't be able to carry a much and you really need to think what's vital to bring.

  • 2 slots - Upper and Lower clothing
  • 2 slots - Pistol and Ammo
  • 2 slots - Medistim and Junkfood
For body clothing I feel it's open to take as much stats as possible for the start. The most important clothing early game imo is the Easy Breathers which gives you 1 SPEED 2 SNEAK 2 TINKER. The speed is just amazing and lets you explore quickly before the SOB Purifier stats to spawn. The other outfits you might get early on which saves 1 inventory slot are the cooler armor and the SOB power armor. The power armor has pretty decent stats which allow you to survive and shoot better but the cooler armor is a nono. It increases tinker and oblit stats greatly but those aren't as useful early on.

So now you have at least 4 or maybe 5 inventory slots if you managed to slay the Purifier and nick his power armor. What else can you hoard early on?

Both buckshot and rifle ammo. You want to gather as many ammo and stash it. The shotguns and rifles however don't really spawn in the early 3 levels of cooler, but the levels after it. Both of this ammo can also be sold for a good amount of TP to Val and buy you a better gun earlier.

A melee weapon. Any of the melee weapons are pretty good early on and help you to conserve a lot of ammo. However you might get trashed around the 4+ levels if you don't have high HIT and some SPEED for a melee build. You can easily replace this once you have copious amount of ammo in your reserve if you're not running a melee build, the fists are pretty good for finishing any unarmored git.

A DUZI. This gun however chews ammo fast and should be used if facing multiple enemies. It is not as accurate at long range as the pistol so making sneak attacks is very hard as well. Try to pick up one that has high ammo still in gun. If low on ammo, I suggest not reloading since it has a high capacity if you're using a pistol as well. You can just hoard multiple DUZIs with high ammo count if you like using it that much.

Tripping hazard. This will help to slow down the purifier by breaking his legs. This can also open up the locked doors but is not recommended unless you have good gear, probably not early on. If you have a SPEED up clothing or can handle the SOB well you can skip this early on.

Don't hoard poopin' pills, rotaways or other meds early on. Just use them once you find them since they last long enough.

Once you unlocked the courier mailbox service you have SIX extra slots to use. These mailboxes are a guaranteed spawn at the end of every third level of the coolers. But they also might appear randomly on any of the levels, and a slightly higher chance of appearing in Locked Rooms. You can put anything that you don't want to lose early on like extra ammo if you're capped or not using.
Fanny packs
Fanny packs increase your inventory size by 3 but they still take up 1 space, giving you +2 inventory slot in total when equipped.

There are three types of these packs: the Fanny Pack, Side Slung Fanny Pack and the Bum Bag. These can usually be found in the dressers in level 4+ of the cooler and possibly spawn on some of the human enemies on any level. I don't think there's any difference in any of the packs being rarer by the other but you can only equip three different named packs.
Maximising your slots and mailbox usage.
So by now you have at least some extra inventory slots but before you know it you only have like 3 extra slots for loot. Here's some tips on inventory managing.

Weapons
Don't bother taking more than 4 weapons. I found out it's much harder to utilise 5 weapons without one of them being useless. If you have a good gun build just drop the melee weapon, I could use either a shotgun or either smg to fill this role since their ammo are easy to find.

If you have a super special gun that you want to use on the boss, put it and the ammo in the mailbox and take it out when you reach the tenth level. This way you can also just swap out loot you scavenged with the gun once you find a random mailbox spawn if you're running low on ammo.

But what happens if you find yourself low on ammo? Just cycle through guns you find on dead corpses with high ammo and toss out once you emptied them. This means you don't need to carry the specific ammo that some guns use if you don't have inventory slots for them. Of course, don't toss out your precious guns that you modded or are hard to find unless you are desperate.

Circumventing Item Caps
Unfortunately to balance things out, there are items caps in this game. Unlike fallout games where you can carry dozens of stimpacks and ammunition, you are capped in this game. But how are you going to carry more than maximum? Just use the dang mailbox.

For example if you're running a long run to the boss you are quite sure to be low on medstims. Just put 5 of them in the mailbox and maybe a stack of solid bread as well which heals for 30. Then on your waster you can carry 4 medstims if you can find extras in the cooler so you don't waste loot. If you end up low on health but found a random mailbox spawn you stashed with medstims that would also help prolong your run as well.

This can also be used the other way as well with loot. Maybe you have a stack of liquid bread by level 3 and stash it in your mailbox, that means you can get another full stack of liquid bread to make more solid bread.

In the end you can fine tune you inventory however you want for different types of runs. If you're not going for a boss run you don't really need to stash solid bread along with medstims inside or extra weapons and ammo.

bit of a necropost but would recommend storing at least 3 spares of all three types of fanny packs so you can always have fanny packs even if you die

By the way, if you ever come across moscow pack mule booze, DRINK IT. it gives you an extra 2 slots, and can be drunken up to 10(!!!!!) times, for up to 20 extra inventory slots.

Or if you are feeling lucky, you can kill the S.O.B Purifier and take his armor. It gives you +3 Shoot, +3 Hit, +3 Oblit and 2 Armor

Or just equip only easy breathers lol. The stats are just insane for an early game item.

It's ok but most of them are outclassed by the normal clothing for stats. Having extra damage and speed/armor is better than slots which do not increase survivablity at all.

If you really want to save item slots i'd go with using a outfit instead of upper and lower clothes
