How to play Skyrim with an actual potato
By [воом] tomato paste and 1 collaborators
This guide will show you how to play Skyrim (and any other game) with some potatoes.
Materials Required
You will need:

  • At least 1 large potato (I used 3.)
Any other fruit, vegetable, metal object, or electrolyte solution (i.e. vinegar, salt water, etc.) will also work.

  • A Makey Makey kit (These are available from Amazon[] for about US$50, but many public libraries have them to check out.)
  • A knife
  • Some extra wire
  • Wire strippers
  • Duct tape or electrical tape

  • A plate or somewhere else to put the potato
The Potato
  1. Cut the potato(es) into 13 total pieces.
  2. Attach one end of an alligator clip (included in the Makey Makey kit) to the potato.

NOTE: I realize that there are not enough alligator clips for all of the potato pieces, you can either go out and buy more (US$5.45 for 10 from Amazon[]) or jam a wire directly into the potato, which is what I did.

  3. Attach the alligator clip to a piece of wire.

  4. Insert the piece of wire into the socket on the Makey Makey board labeled "W"

  5. Repeat for the "A", "S", "D", "F", "G", Mouse Up, Mouse Down, Mouse Left, Mouse Left, Left Click, and Right Click sockets, as well as the "SPACE" alligator clip connection.

  1. Strip one side of a wire about an inch

  2. Attach an alligator clip to one of the connections on the Makey Makey board marked "EARTH"

  3. Attach the other end of the alligator clip to the side of the wire that isn't stripped an inch

  4. Wrap the inch long bit of exposed wire around your finger

  5. Secure with something such as duct tape or electrical tape

To play, you must remap two keys in your game, assuming you have followed the instructions in the last section. I prefer:

  • Player menu to "G" (this will make G act like the tab key)
  • Interact to "F"
You can now brag to your friends that you can play Skyrim on a potato.

If you haven't tried this yet and want to see how it looks, here's a video!

A quick retrospective (and yes, I know it's only been 4 days):

Wow. For once in my life, taking a joke a bit too far paid off. Thanks for everything, guys!

Perfect for button mashers, butterfingers and salty keyboard warriors.

You should post this to the makers of Mr. Potato Head, they might actually want this cutting edge technology.

I'll get my coat jacket.
