For this episode we’re going to make an omelet, specifically a French omelet, which I’m known for, at least here in this kitchen. In Stardew Valley you can learn the omelet recipe from the cooking channel on the 28th of Spring, on odd years. Only 2 ingredients are required, an egg and some milk. Of course, with a cost of 6000 gold for a barn and another 1500 gold for a cow you probably won’t be enjoying this food in the Spring of your first year.

I make French omelets most weekends for my fiancee and I. When you think of an omelet you probably think of something thick, bi-folded, and with a bunch of veggies, meats and/or cheese in the pocket. A French omelet is more simple, tri-fold, and is complimented by herbs, especially fresh herbs. I don’t have any fresh herbs on hand today so we’re going to make due with freeze-dried chives, which really are a great staple to keep on hand.

I have adapted this recipe from a YouTube video by Mythbuster’s host Adam Savage. I’ll put a link in the description. The ingredients are:
3 eggs
1 tbsp butter
Freeze-dried chives
Shredded cheese (optional)

Directions:
1. Break 3 eggs into a small mixing bowl and whisk, making sure to beat air into the eggs. According to my Hungarian cooking class, this should be violent but not messy
2. Melt butter in a non-stick skillet over medium-low heat (I use 3.5 on my stove)
3. Add freeze-dried chives to the butter and spread throughout
4. Add egg. Using a spatula mix the butter, chives, and egg; continue to pull the spatula through the egg to spread
5. Monitor the egg and scrape down the sides of the skillet, looking for places where the egg is cooking more quickly; adjust the skillet over the element as necessary
6. When the egg begins to clump, stop pulling the spatula through the egg
7. If you are using the optional shredded cheese, or any other ingredient, now is the time to add it, but only down the middle of the egg, keeping in mind the tri-fold
8. Watch the egg for signs of glistening while also being mindful of sizzling. You are waiting to begin the flip. Too early and it will flow around the flip, too late and you may brown the bottom of the egg
9. Flip the right side of the omelet onto the middle with the line of the flip about ⅓ of the way across the skillet. This is the easier one, but if it breaks, quickly use the spatula to repair the break
10. Flip the left side of the omelet onto the middle with the line of the flip about ½ way across the omelet
11. Lift the left edge of the skillet off the element and using a large spatula flip the omelet from the right side, over, onto the left side. If it breaks try to join the parts together using the spatula, there should still be liquid egg which can repair the break
12. After a few moments remove the skillet from heat. Some of the egg should still be soft. If you wait too long you will brown the bottom of the omelet. Plate immediately and serve.

I used to struggle with omelets until I watched that video by Adam Savage. Now, I’m so impressed every time I make an omelet. This is truly wonderful, even without the filling. And if you have fresh herbs, don’t mix them into the egg, sprinkle them on top of the completed omelet. Let the egg and herbs stand on their own and I think you’ll be amazed at the result.
