'Free Samples' Health Upgrade Guide

If you need the 'Free Samples' achievement or just a little extra health!

Introduction

Scattered across the game's four main boss stages (Sky Fortress, Mt Afrokupa, Pumpkin Valley and Oil Platform) are secret meeting points for Gourmet Gal. If you find her, she'll gift you a delicious meal that will not only fully recover your health, but also give you an extra heart container to boot! After you find all four, you'll also be awarded the 'Free Samples' achievement.

Below are screenshots detailing where you'll find the entrance to her screen as well as a brief explanation on how to access her.

Sky Fortress

Gourmet Gal is located at the end of the third screen (where the spike pits and propeller fluffs are located), just before the first checkpoint. You'll need to break the section of wall either with your dash or the Saucy Shot in order to get through. If you dash, you should land back on the platform if you do it high enough (or simply dash back after). Once the way is cleared, you'll find our enigmatic chef waiting on the other side.

Mt Afrokupa

After the second checkpoint, at the beginning of the screen of fire-spitting onis on icy platforms, you'll find this cracked wall. Bust through it using your favourite attack to reach Gourmet Gal on the other side. She'll reward you with a pizza for your effort.

Pumpkin Valley

At the bottom of the large vertical segment after the first checkpoint (just before the second), you'll have to dig your way through several destructible blocks to reach this Gourmet Gal. Most of them will have some money too. Remember this for when it comes time to do your 'A' rank runs!

Oil Platform

After the second checkpoint, when you come to the vertical segment with the cannonballs, you'll need to jump through the false wall at the bottom right to reach Gourmet Gal. The false wall is indicated by the darker palette and is seen in a few places throughout the level. In the accompanying image, you can see Chelshia pointing out where exactly the wall is.
