1 potential per trade (auction house included).
1 potential per opening a slot on a piece of gear.
1 potential per failing to upgrade a weapon.
There is no way to prevent potential loss on trades, or restore it once it hits 0.
You can equip gear with 0 potential but you can't make any of the above adjustments at that point.
It's kind of like an anti-inflation mechanic.
This is the only pet so far to appear in the shop the reason it costs so much is because it gives a +30 Physical & Magical DEF and doesn't require mount training to ride.

Barn Owl & Toucan - Falconer Only and are Not Mountable.
