Getting Started.
Colonisation is a key element of EU:Rome it makes smaller nations strong and stronger nations stronger.Colonisation is important to many nations to expansion and survival in-game.

Since this is EU:Rome I'll be showing how to colonise as Rome through this guide in the 474 AVC start date, though the basic principles of colonisation can apply to any other nation wishing to colonise.

Rome starts off in 474 AVC at war with the Kingdom of Epirus and Magna Graecia defeat these foes and take the land in Italy.

Now with things squared away its time to start colonising. But where and how?
Where.
Rome is in a good position to colonise straight out the door moving more and more into northern Italy and from there the rest of the world. Rome can begin to colonise the provinces of Liguria and Bononia.

For this guide we will colonise Bononia.

As you can see Bononia has some barbarians living in it and it is time for Rome to bring them into the fold. Bononia is of Celtic culture and Druidism religion these we do not need to worry about for now. What we will need to worry about is the civilisation level and the barbarian strength from the province as well as horde chance.

As you can see the civilisation level of Bononia is at 30.0% with modifiers on what the civilisation does to the province.

Still we cannot click the colonise button due to it being greyed out because we do not have the requirements to colonise.
How.
All colonisation in EU:Rome follows these three basic steps.

1.You must have a province adjecent to the Barbarian province which has a Civilisation value of 50% or more and a population of 10.0 or more.

2.The Barbarian province must have a Barbarian power of 2 or less.

3.Surrounding AI nations must not have a province of greater civilisation value than your own, adjecent to the Barbarian province.

1A. As you can see our closest province to Bononia is Umbria

It has a civilisation level of 60%

and its population level is more than 10

However the Barbarian population in Bononia is over 2

So its time to poke the barbarians and force them to move off their land in the name of Rome.
Poke the Barbarians.
With all the requirments met its time to poke the barbarians into fighting you for the land you want to colonise.

Simply build a mercenary unit and put it on Bononia or put your army there something that will upset the barbarians and spur them into action.

With the barbarians risen up against your troops they will form into a horde, hordes are especially dangerous when in large numbers however this time Bononia had a barbarian population of 6 and will defend their lands with 6 thousand men.

Crush this barbarian horde in the name of Rome and move your troops onto the province you wish to colonise.

You'll notice that the colonisation button is no longer greyed out meaning its time to colonise!
The Colonial life.
Click that ungreyed colony button.

The colony will take a few months to set up.

Now your colony is set up.Keep your army on this province since there are still barbarians in the colony and there population will double while under your rule they may even try to revolt and reclaim their homeland, however through time they will adapt to Roman culture and religion and become a full fledge settlement of your growing ambition for more land.

First Steam guide i've done if there's anything that needs more explaining put it in the comments and i'll add it to the guide. Have fun colonising.

hey dont forget to mention that the colony starts out with 4? population. Some of it coming from the province closest to the colony BUT some population also gets taken from ROME your home province!! Now dont end up like me, with 10 total Population in Rome, wondering how to get enough people to make use of all the toilets and stuff...
