Lewis' shorts: How and where to find them
By Kramatus
One of the first quests, the quest where you are tasked with obtaining Lewis' shorts, tends to drag on if you don't focus on how to obtain them as soon as possible. This guide will change that and instruct you on how to obtain them as soon as possible...

The abridged version
Become aquainted with Marnie 'til you earn the two heart friendship rating that allows you to invade her bedroom. Grab the shorts that are lying on the floor, then give them to Lewis.

Then collect your reward.

Then profit.

...You're done!

Read the next section if you need a better tutorial that lasts more than a good minute and a half or so at most.
A more in-depth walkthrough
Lewis will approach you one day, claiming that he's lost his purple spotted... "shorts"... You're not sure what he means by that, but he asks that you turn them in to him discreetly, as soon as you possibly can. Naturally, if you've visited Marnie in her shop south of your farm, you've got glimpse of the shorts through your inexplicable means of viewing the world from the top down... (Maybe you inherited telepathic abilities from your grandfather along with the farm?)

The only way to break down the door for Marnie' room, or most of the other residents in town, is to befriend them by giving them things or doing quests for them until you get a two heart rating. Then you can break down the door and invade her private sanctum.

In order to befriend Marnie, you need to give her things, which requires you to give specific items that she will react positively to. It's unlikely that early on, you'll have access to or want to part with items that Marnie specifically loves, such as diamonds, pink cake, pumpkin pie, or farmer's lunch.

So, perhaps you should focus on giving Marnie a universally-liked item that can be purchased from the Stardrop Saloon: coffee. Buy some coffee from Gus at the saloon for Marnie, buy a few extra dozen cups for yourself because holy cow the speed boost effect it applies handy for getting around, and make a mad dash to earn those two stars by giving Marnie some caffine.

Befriend Marnie over the course of a few weeks, then once you've earned those two hearts of affection, enter her bedroom, pick up the shorts, and-

Wait these look like boxers.

...Why Marnie didn't bother to clean up dirty laundry that wasn't even hers over the course of the days, weeks, or seasons that you spent befriending her, will have to remain an indefinite mystery. What those "shorts" were doing on the floor of Marnie's room will have to be left to your imagination, and possibly a future event you can encounter, but we're not here to ruminate on that, we're here to complete this quest.

Return the "shorts" to Lewis. Lewis will promptly tell you not to judge him and to not think too hard as to why they were with Marnie, and he will tell you to that this conversation and exchange never happened.

Congratulations! You've finished the quest. Enjoy your prize of a cash reward and a scarring mental image that will most likely take some time to bury in your subconscious...

Put the shorts in the Luao and on the grange display in the Stardew Valley Fair!

There's also a fun thing you can do with the shorts.

Let's say you've won your first Stardew Fair. There's no real point trying to win it again, as you've already got the Stardrop, Turniphead Rarecrow and that classy Fedora from last year. For some reason, you never got around to befriending Marnie. You decide to clear out your questlist. Loki smiles upon you, as just as you're getting to "Lewis's Shorts", the Stardew Valley Fair is drawing near.

You befriend Marnie, probably by giving her the Diamonds that Lewis never would. You pick up the shorts and realise that Lewis could have picked up his own damn shorts. You decide to run them up the flagpole, but discover that there is no flagpole to run them up. So you do the next best thing.

You put them in your grange display.

Show that autocratic codger what for!

I find it pretty interesting that the game has little bits that would not be included in a more child-like farming game. Harvest Moon wouldn't have put in a guy who digs food out of the trash can...
