How to remap the Pause key

The Pause/Break key is no longer common on many keyboards. That being said, AoM: EE doesn't let you remap the Pause key ingame. This guide will teach you how to remap it by editing one of the game's files.

Step 1

Go to the "game.con" file - It's usually located on C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Age of Mythology\startup
Or you can access it by clicking with the left mouse button on "Age of Mythology: Extended Edition", on your library, selecting "Properties" > "Local files" > "Browse local files...". Then, go to the folder "startup" and open the "game.con" file (you can open it with the Notepad).

Step 2

Type the command "Ctrl + F" and search for "pause". You'll find this line: map ("pause", "game", "pause"). Just change the first "pause" word to one key of your choice. Mine is "Esc", so it doesn't have conflicts with keys used for other actions. It goes like this: map ("Esc", "game", "pause")

Step 3

Save the file, close it and go play your game with Pause enabled!

Important note!

Sadly, with every new patch, you'll need to do this all over again (because the "normal" gamex.con file is with the original Pause/Break option mapped). I hope the devs adds an option ingame to remap this key.

Conclusion

Thank you so much! I wish I had seen this guide a couple years ago!! It's always bothered me that most RTS's from Ensemble Studios don't have the option to remap pause. I tend to replay the campaigns more than I play online, so pausing is an essential feature. Thanks for making this!

Speak for yourself. Here in Brazil they don't exist since early 2000s (only during the 90s we had them). Why this change? I've no idea, but the fact is that you can't find a Brazilian Portuguese keyboard with the Pause key nowadays. And I bet this change may have happened in other countries too, so I made this guide to help those people that have no Pause key in their keyboards. I wouldn't waste my time for no reason.

The pause key is still present on pc keyboards lol. Normal keyboards have never removed it and gaming keyboards merely added a third functionality to the key (lighting level adjust) but it still works just like the old pause keys when in games.
