Port Royal packs a lot of game into 120 cards and 30 minutes.

The game

The game is an engine-building victory point game based around the Jamaican town of Port Royal in the days of piracy. First to 12 points is the winner.


Brief explanation of the gameplay.
On your turn in Port Royal you turn cards over one by one. You can stop at any time and at that point you can acquire a card from the ones you have turned over. However, some of these cards are ship cards and if you turn over a second ship of a colour then your turn is over. So herein lies one of the game's mechanisms: push your luck. But really I don't want to overplay this element as it is not fundamentally a push-your-luck game. This aspect does add some drama and excitement to the game, and allows some opportunities for catch-up, but it is not by any means the heart of the game. In fact there are things you can do to mitigate against the bad luck of turning a second ship of the same colour (you have to hire sailors or pirates who repel the ships), so fear not, this is not a push-your-luck luck-fest.

Presuming that you did not turn over a second ship of the same colour you get to do one of two things: (1) take a ship that is in the display you have just created, instantly discard it and take the money from the ship, or (2) hire one of the people on the cards on the display, and take them into your card tableau. People cost money and generate an interesting benefit as well as generating Victory Points.

After you have taken a card, each of your opponents may also take a card from the display that you have just revealed but they have to pay you a coin to do so.

Money is indicated by a coin symbol on the back of a card, bohnanza-style.

Die Karibik im goldenen Zeitalter der Piraterie: Große Gefahren lauern in diesen Gewässern. Doch die Aussicht auf unermesslichen Reichtum rechtfertigt so manches Risiko. Die Spieler begeben sich in Port Royal auf die Suche nach einer schlagkräftigen Crew und versuchen gierige Freibeuter zu meiden. Nur wer wagt, wird seinen Einfluss steigern und schließlich einem königlichen Expeditionsaufruf folgen können. Aber wer zu viel riskiert, läuft Gefahr, alles zu verlieren.
Port Royal ist ein mehrfach ausgezeichnetes, schnelles Kartenspiel mit der vollen Breitseite Piraten-Flair. Dank der einfachen Regel können die Spieler sofort in See stechen und bei der Erkundung fremder Gewässer ihren Mut beweisen.
Das Spiel gewann unter dem Titel „Händler der Karibik“ den Spieleautoren-Wettbewerb 2013 der Wiener Spiele Akademie.
