SPOILER WARNING
Please note that this guide contains major spoilers. I recommend experiencing the game for yourself first and trying to unlock the characters on your own before you consult this guide.
HRT-1 PROTOTYPE
The predecessor of HEART. Starts out with only 1 HP and gains less HP from upgrades, too.

To unlock this character, beat SLASH at the end of the tutorial.

After Doctor Sympatic receives his assistants warning and leaves the room, SLASH will challenge you to a fight to the death - defeat him and you will unlock HRT-1 PROTOTYPE. Careful, you only have 1 HP!

Unlock achievement: "FAST LEARNER"
HEART-O-WEEN
When playing as HEART-O-WEEN, levels are darker and a heart-shaped light from your jack-o'-lantern head illuminates what is infront of you. Spooky!

This character is unlocked simply by starting the game on or around October 31.

Unlock achievement: "CREATURE OF THE NIGHT?"
SLASH [Part 1]
SLASH, the rebel military robot, comes with less HP than HEART but has the ability to evade in midair.

Unlike other characters he has his own line of quests.

If you need to find SLASH, look out for an "!" marker displayed on the map. This "!" shows up regardless if you already visited the rooms adjacent to the one SLASH is in or not, so you can just scroll out on your map to reveal if there is any of his quests on your current level.

Careful, SLASH is killable whenever he appears! Don't hit him on accident or you might end up resetting his line of quests.

This guide describes all parts of his quest in order and mentions the corresponding achievement.
If you are not sure how far you already advanced in SLASH's questline, simply check which of these achievements you already have.

LEVEL ONE - ROBOT FACTORY

1. Fight SLASH [related achievement: "MERCIFUL HEART"]
Upon entering the room he is in, SLASH will talk to you, then challenge you to a fight. Should you win you get the option to either kill or spare him. Spare him and you will be able to meet him again in the next part of his quest.

2. Survive SLASH's challenge ["THE BEST DEFENSE"]
In this encounter, SLASH will trap you in chains, preventing you from evading attacks. Don't worry, you don't have to fight him here, SLASH will simply leave. Survive long enough without dying to make the chains disappear.

3. Free SLASH ["SHORT CIRCUIT"]
You will find SLASH trapped and surrounded by lasers. He will mention you short circuiting the consoles to free him. All you have to do is hit the console in the far end of the room with an electric weapon, causing you to lose almost all of your HP and releasing SLASH.

4. Talk to SLASH and defeat the GUARDIAN ["MARCHING ON"]
SLASH will meet you in another room and once again talk to you, asking you to beat the "GUARDIAN", which is one of the possible bosses of the factory level, the B-DSS KNIGHT.
SLASH [Part 2]
LEVEL TWO - CITY

5. Find SLASH ["HIDE AND SEEK"]
SLASH will be standing atop a tree in the city. Find him by looking for the "!" marker once again, and talk to him. He will ask you to destroy security consoles so he can move around freely.

6. Destroy the security stations ["FOLLOW THE LEADER"]
Look for rooms marked with an "!" (ignore the room with the tree with SLASH on it). Once you arrive in such a room, look for a bunch of blue and yellow screens on a wall. Destroy five of them to advance.

This part of the quest usually takes multiple runs to finish, so don't panic if you can't find all 5 consoles right away.

7. Talk to SLASH ["INTO THE SUNSET]

When you're done destroying consoles, find SLASH on his tree again. He will tell you that he will see you at the space elevator, which is not completely true because you will find him again before that in the sewers of the city level.
SLASH, apparently in trouble, will ask you to scrap a weapon to help him up again - don't worry about the "Doctor" warning you of a trap and just do it. Some elite enemies will attack you and SLASH, defeat them with your powers united.
SLASH [Part 3]
LEVEL THREE - SPACE ELEVATOR

8. Defeat QuAsSy ["HEART&SLASH"]
If you're here, you are almost done with SLASH's questline - it is time for the finale.
Go to the end of the level as usually and you will see SLASH kneeling infront of QuAsSy.

SLASH will tell you that QuAsSy is too strong and you should just give up, but you are not as wimpy as him, so don't do that. Instead, recycle yourself - the option to do so is unique and only available in this fight - to give SLASH some of your strength. Your HP will drop to 1 and you will have to defeat QuAsSy. If you want an easier fight, recycle some of your weapons or body parts just after your HP dropped down, the few extra HP you gain from this are usually worth it.

You will only have to damage QuAsSy once to end the fight, which will also unlock SLASH.
ROBNIN
Robnin, a robot from another time, can evade attacks in midair and carries his own set of blades. He would never switch them for any other weapons!

To unlock Robnin, unlock all blade weapons in the game.

Unlock achievement: "ROBNIN"
ECLIPSE
This canine robot is quite different from the other characters, but that doesn't mean he can't fight QuAsSy's robot army.

To unlock him, defeat 20 of each D.O.G. variant and part:
Variants: C.O.P., Scavenger, Elite,
Parts: Dash Legs, Watergun, Knife, and Venomgun.

[Picture is missing, sorry 'bout that.]

Unlock achievement: "BAD DOGGY"

To the people struggling with unlocking HRT-1 Prototype.
What i did was wait out until Slash did his uppercut attack before attacking him since he has an animation on landing, which lets you hit him.
Good luck to you guys.

I've gor a problem with Slash unlocking. In the city, after I destroyed all consoles, and talked to him, he just dont spawn at sewers at all. I made 15+ runs and he is nowhere seen. Is that RNG cruel to me, or some bug?

Unlocking HRT-1 is such absolute bullshit. Slash is faster, has a boatload more health, has a faster attack with longer reach, and has an unpredictable moveset.

Feels like the devs didn't fucking playtest that requirement at all.

Also, you can't upgrade shit in the tutorial, because you need parts, and nothing drops them.

@SantaAzul Agreed, it's been about 4 or 5 runs at least and I still haven't found Slash in the city at all. This shouldn't have to be RNG based, just let me progress, dammit.

Unlocking Eclipse is so stupid, you have to farm the C.O.P transmitters (which are basically a one-shot) for C.O.P dogs and water pack dogs, that or you just play in endless dungeon

Somehow, I feel like, after the last Slash quest in the lab, the RNG for finding him in the city becomes unforgivable.

Re: Slash Coming Back: Slash comes back, but you have to start the whole quest over. If you're referring to the tutorial, I have no idea.
