MOD INSTALLING GUIDE (2022 UPDATED)
By Grizzly Coward
Mods are a great way to change and tweak different elements of a game to your liking. Be it modifying models, sounds, music, animations or core gameplay elements, mods provide you with an opportunity to refresh your experience. I've modded PAYDAY 2 for more than 6 years, so I have some experience with it. This guide will teach you how to mod your game on Windows.

Useful stuff
For quality of life, I recommend installing 7-zip[www.7-zip.org]. This is a very useful tool for navigating and extracting compressed files commonly used to store mods. If you use your computer regularly, I can assure you this'll come in handy on other occasions.

Websites
When it comes to places you can download mods from, there are many, but the longest running and the most established source for mods is ModWorkshop,[modworkshop.net] known a long time ago as LastBullet.
Some other reputable mod sources are ModDB and Nexus Mods.[www.nexusmods.com] Though personally I haven't used these sites for Payday 2 specifically, both support many other games.

BLT Mods
This has long been my personal favorite mod type.
This method allows you to change gameplay aspects of the game- from something as handy as a mod that fixes bugs and crashes[modworkshop.net], a FOV adjustment mod[modworkshop.net] to something as trivial but fun as a Hotline Miami-esque combo counter.[modworkshop.net]

WALKTHROUGH

In order to install them, you will need SuperBLT.[superblt.znix.xyz] This is a modding utility necessary for BLT mods to operate. To install it:
  • Download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable package (x86) by clicking on the highlighted text,
  • Download the Latest Release DLL similarly to the previous step and extract the file by going to the folder where you downloaded the file, right-clicking it and choosing one of the extract options from the 7-Zip menu.
  • Now you will need to open your PAYDAY 2 file directory. To do this, select the Library tab on your Steam app and go to Home, search for PAYDAY 2, then right-click and press on Properties, go to Local and, finally, Browse... Your PAYDAY 2 installation location will now open.

The files there will look somewhat like this. You will now need to put the WSOCK32.dll file into your directory.
  • After you've done the above, you will need to create a folder named "mods" (the name is the same as in quotation marks). If you're planning on using custom heists, make a "Maps" folder as well. Since you're here at this point, you might also want to also go into your "assets" folder and create another folder called "mod_overrides". This'll be useful for the next method.

If you've done all of the above (and bought the PAYDAY 2 OST), your file directory should now look somewhat like this (the most important are the WSOCK32.dll file and the mods folder)
  • Start the game, and SuperBLT will prompt you to download the basemod. Select Yes, and it will notify you when it's done downloading. At this point, SuperBLT has been fully installed.
  • Let's install another modding tool- BeardLib.[modworkshop.net] Press the download button and extract as before (or don't, you can also open the compressed file and move its contents), open your game directory in another and move the Beardlib folder into your mods folder.
Congratulations! You've just installed your first BLT mod.
If you'd like to install other mods, this is roughly the way to do it. If you'd like a website where you can find BLT mods in, try ModWorkshop's BLT category. [modworkshop.net] Be sure to check the mod descriptions or the Dependencies & Instructions tab in case the mod has some other requirements.

Once you download your mods, you'll be able to tweak them in your options under a tab called Mods or BLT mods.

mod_overrides
This method is a bit easier to do than BLT.
WALKTHROUGH

  • First, you will need to open your PAYDAY 2 file directory. To do this, select the Library tab on your Steam app and go to Home, search for PAYDAY 2, then right-click and press on Properties, go to Local and, finally, Browse... Your PAYDAY 2 installation location will now open.
  • After you've done the above, you will need to go into your "assets" folder and create a folder called "mod_overrides".
  • As an example, let's use Dragonfly_Chaser's TF2 Sniper replaces Ilija[modworkshop.net] mod. You can use any other mod_overrides mod that you'd like.
  • Download the file by pressing the Download button. Then, extract the file by going to the folder where you downloaded the file, right-clicking it and choosing one of the extract options from the 7-Zip menu (you can also alternatively open the compressed file). Open your game directory, then the Asset and mod_overrides folder and move the mod folder (in our case- TF2 Sniper) there.
Congratulations! You've downloaded your first mod_overrides mod.
If you'd like to install other mods, this is roughly the way to do it. If you'd like a website where you can find more mods in, try ModWorkshop. [modworkshop.net] Be sure to check the mod descriptions or the Dependencies & Instructions tab in case the mod has some other requirements.

Hello everyone! Quite honestly I haven't paid any attention to this guide for... 5 years, but now it should be good to go with up to date information. Best of luck in your modding endeavours! :lunar2019coolpig:

@J0s4U8 none of the links contain viruses. The sites probably shut down or were sold and it redirects you to some suspicious sites which MAY contain viruses. This guide is very old (it's from 2016) so don't expect this stuff to work anymore.

"Scroll down for more information If you want!" there was nothing else about mod_overrides about how you put it in...do you put in the whole folder? or the contents of the folder?

You would have to get a BLT version that is designed for Linux. Windows and Linux do everything very different from each other. I think this is it here. https://github.com/blt4linux/blt4l

Nevermind, turned out it was Norton once again proving what a waste of money it would have been if my service provider didn't provide it for free. Auto protect had deleted the main dll for BLT.
