Moon Lord: The Ultimate Guide!

Moon Lord the lord of almighty darkness; As we all Terraria players know Moon Lord the final boss of the said game is by far the hardest boss in the game, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to defeat him. In this guide i'll share my experiences of Moon Lord as well on how to actually defeat him, I will try my best to explain this guide so you get to be a true BOSS!

Introduction to Moon Lord

Moon Lord is not only the biggest boss in the game but it's the strongest of them all. (14 total.) His total HP is 145,000 (Normal mode.) And 217,500 HP on expert making it the boss with the most HP in the game, but don't let this intimidate you as he can be pretty easy if you have skill and practice. Moon Lord is a hardmode post Golem boss very similar to what probably the authors of the game based it off on, Cthulhu[en.wikipedia.org]. Moon lord was added in the known 1.3 update which has escalated on to quite a few tweaks here and there, now that we are on 1.3.0.8.


Moon Lord's History:

1.3.0.6: Attacks now follow their own immunity cooldown.

1.3.0.5: Can now be summoned with the Celestial Sigil.

1.3.0.4: The Moon Lord will now teleport to the player once they are far enough away.
You can no longer escape from the Moon Lord's wrath. (e.g. teleport home to heal and fight the Moon Lord at full health)
Body parts now properly show display names.
Cultists cannot respawn while Moon Lord is alive or spawning

1.3.0.3: The Moon Lord's leeching effect has been massively buffed, and he applies a debuff that prevents any healing from weapons.

1.3.0.2: The death message now properly displays "Moon Lord has been defeated", instead of "Moon Lord Core has been defeated".

1.3.0.1: Introduced.

Moon Lord's Total HP

Moon Lord the hardest of hardest, the hardest boss in the game but that by no means it's impossible to defeat him. Moon Lord's appearance is quite intimidating compared to other bosses in the game itself. Moon Lord has 3 current parts you have to focus on to defeat him. (4 If we count the other hand). The hands which vary from 25,000 HP (Normal mode.) /37,500 HP(Expert mode.) The head which has 45,000 HP (Normal mode.) /67,500 HP (Expert mode.) And the last and final part which contains more HP, The Core which has 50,000 HP (Normal mode.) /75,000 HP (Expert mode.)

Moon Lord's Attacks/Defense/Inmunity/Summon

Moon Lord has quite a few attacks you have to deal with while fighting him, which will of course make the fight harder and last longer.

Moon Lord: Info

Moon Lord is the final boss in the game and in the the Celestial Event, in order to summon the Moon Lord you must destroy the 4 Celestial Pillars, which include The Stardust Pillar, Solar Pillar, Vortex Pillar, and the Nebula Pillar. When the last pillar is destoyed you'll get the message "Impending doom approaches..." at the bottom left of your screen. Moon Lord will eventually spawn, and therefore the backgrounds will completely be reduced to blackness and the sun will dissapear. Moon Lord won't leave the player alone until the player manages to defeat him, or dies in the act. After you've managed to defeat Moon Lord you'll instantly get rewarded with the achievement "Champion Of Terraria"

The Battle

Moon Lord has 4 sections (2 hands, The central head eye, and the Core) although the hands and the central head eye need to be eliminated in order for the core to be exposed. Eliminating the core will kill Moon Lord. Though the eyes can only be damaged when they're open. As the fights goes ocasionally Moon Lord will extend what it looks like to be a tongue which latches on to nearby players. It will then extract some white particles out of the player, the particles are destructible, but if the particles manage to reach Moon Lord he will then recover 1,000 HP.

Fast Moon Lord kill:
It is highly recommended you use the Stardust dragon staff, with the Tiki armor or Stardust armor.

Strategies:
It's a good idea to 1st focus on the central head eye because the Phantasm beam attack causes well over 100 damage to the player. (It can be dodged.) Secondary come's the True Eye's of Cthulhu which are more dangerous, it can be a heck of a strategy to survive the attacks from the True Eye's of Cthulhu. Destroying the hands before the head CAN leave the player in a more complicated situation. Destroying the leeching particles should also be a top priority as the boss can heal itself with the mentioned particles. A mount like the UFO which is summoned by using the Cosmic Car Key or Shrimpy Truffle are highly recommended due to the unlimited flight it provides. It is possible to obtain a higher speed than the Moon Lord himself the mounts can allow the player to kite the Moon Lord staying out of his range/attacks.

Melee:
Melee classes can be rather difficult against the Moon Lord generally because the eyes stay out of the player's reach. In the other hand melee weapons with high range can be a good weapon in the fight. Spears included of course but the one i'd recommend will be the Solar Eruption due to it's high range and damage. It can be crafted from the Solar Pillar and the Solar Fragments it drops used with Solar Pillars. This let's you avoid most of the Moon Lord's attack's while still being able to damage him.

Drive By (Ranged):
This strategy is possibly the easiest, thought it requiers alot of preparation and patience. And of course several stacks of Chlorophyte Bullets. A Mechanical cart is also recommended and essential while employing this strategy. (In expert mode.) The armor i'd recommend would be the Beetle armor with the Beetle shell, or if Moon Lord has been defeated a few times already Solar Flare Armor or Vortex Armor is highly recommended. Chain Gun, Megashark, or Vortex beater are the weapons of choice. If the player doesn't have enough Chlorophyte ammunition, just make crystal bullets or the most demanding ammunition possible.

Accesories should all be forged to warding. Bonuses to speed do not affect minecart's speed.

To set up the Arena, make an above ground cart track that runs atleast two full screen lenghts. The longer the track the better, at each end create a bumper ending with a hammer. Then, go along the track and place platforms at eye level. This will work as a platform for all of the Heart Statues, Star Statues, Campfires, and buff givers. The more statues the better. Wire the statues up to a 3 second timer or better. Optionally, there can be row of blocks periodically above the track to server as cover from the Moon Lord's beam attack, so long as there is a way to attack him back. Another variant is to use Pressure Plate Track with teleporters to create multi-level track arena to dodge in and out of cover, or at each end of the track to keep the movement direction constant.

The flight will consist of running away at top speed in the minecart and shooting backward and upward as the Moon Lord tried to catch up. When the cart hits the bumpers on the end of the track, the cart continues at the same speed in the other direction, freeing the player to concentrate on DPS and their own health. Using Chlorophyte ammunition gets the best results, as the Mechanical cart travels 102 mph at top speed, and the Moon Lord will teleport largely off screen behind the player. This method can take a long time, but as the player will stay out of range of most enemy attacks and only occasionally heal when hit by the eyebeam, it is one of the easiest.



Fight, Warp, Nurse, Repeat:

1st you need to make sure your nurse is near your spawnpoint. Then you do everything as normal, keeping the Moon Lord away from your spawnpoint, and only teleporting back if you can't use a potion and need heal badly (Example: having 100 health and no potions.) no matter how far you travel, The Moon Lord never despawns. This will allow you to heal yourself in emergency cases and use the Nurse more often.



If you're on normal mode you should teleport when you reach 200 or 250 health. In expert mode that can up to 300 hp. Conclusion

Moon Lord is one heck of a boss, especially on expert mode but with enough patience and skill you can dominate the all mighty lord of darkness himself. I'd recommend not fighting him until you feel COMPLETELY capable of defeating him, and take it easy if you loose the game ain't over you can still fight him using a celestial sigil. And better yet the game gives you some time to prepare before Moon Lord arrives, so you'll be completely ready.
