Stasis Rifle

The stasis rifle is one of the unique weapons that you can use in the game. Calling it a weapon even feels strange, I like to think of it as one of the tech items you have access to. It's not meant to harm creatures in the ocean, rather protect you from them.

If you watch my video, you'll see me find that out the hard way - I killed several animals thinking they would give me matts to craft various things with only to find out that they were simply a part of the environment (at least in this current build) or that there was another way of retrieving the matt that didn't involve stabbing something to death with my survival blade.

I think that's a great thing about the game - it promotes conservation, and discourages the player from turning up to this incredible planet and slaughtering every creature in sight so they can build some cool scaled armour or a jellyfish hat.

Anyway to craft the stasis rifle you will first need to have built a fragment analyzer with your build tool. Once you've got this, you need to then explore the surrounding ocean until you find a stasis rifle fragment (fragments are little grey boxes scattered around the ocean floor). You'll only need one of these, as soon as you have it, put it inside your fragment analyzer and wait patiently until the fragment has been analyzed. Alternatively use this time to search for quartz or silver ore. You'll need a tonne of these materialas if you haven't figured it out already as they are used to create computer chips and glass, WHICH ARE A PART OF ALMOST EVERY AWESOME ITEM IN THE GAME.

Once this fragment has been analyzed, return to your fabricator and you'll find the stasis rifle is now available under personal.

Using the Stasis Rifle

So what does this thing actually do? Well if you pronounced the word correctly (unlike me, I'm not very intuitive without context) then you'll have realised it has something to do with suspended animation. Assign it to one of your five inventory slots by hovering over it inside your inventory and pressing the desired number (1-5) and dive into the ocean. We're going out looking for a stalker, which brings me to the next section of this guide...
Using the Stasis Rifle

When you fire the stasis rifle you have the option to charge it, doing so will create a larger stasis field. If you decide that you don't actually want to fire the rifle you have a small amout of time to opt-out by selecting another item from your inventory slots. If the rifle reaches full charge however, it will fire automatically. The charge meter is visible on the back of the rifle.

Anything that is caught within this field will be frozen for about ten seconds. You are immune to the rifles effects so this is also a good form of defense - fire a charge off to form a protective bubble that will freeze anything that enters it. Keep in mind that it will not form a stasis field if the charge does not connect with anything, i.e. you fire into open water or miss the aggressive target moving towards you and end up as fish food.

Acquiring the elusive Stalker Tooth
For some reason the stalker's must have known I was looking for them, because it took me some time, rifle in hand, to come across them, even though during previous harvesting missions I was plagued by stalkers every time, and would be innocently going about my business, cracking open a limestone rock in search of my basic ores WHEN BAM, stalker bites my face off.

Anyway, my first attempt as aformentioned was a failure. I froze the stalker in place with a charge from my stasis rifle, just as it turned around to indulge in some face biting (you'll see in the youtube vid) and proceeded to hack it to death with my trusty survival blade. But I was not rewarded with a tooth. I found this quite odd.

It just so happens, that a stalker does not lose a tooth upon death, but instead does so when they are casually rearranging the metal salvage that litters the ocean since your arrival.

The easiest way to obtain multiple teeth (or tooth's depending on how you want to look at it) is to collect some of the salvage and play catch with the stalker. Yes drop it from your inventory and the stalker will grab it and move it to where it feels is a more appropriate place, rinse and repeat and after no time at all you'll have yourself a nice collection of these rareish matts.

You'll also find yourself spotting them more frequently once you know what they look like in random places throughout the map where stalkers like to hang out. P

PS there are a couple of extra stalker tips from Pokeking in the comments below.

Here's a screenshot so you know what they look like -

holy crap this is so out of date! (mostly the stasis rifle part. the stalker teeth are fine.)

actually, the best and easiest way to get teeth is to actually feed the stalkers with peepers. after that, they become passive and will sometimes even bring u metal salvage and drop teeth in the proccess! all for a couple of peepers!

Sometimes, Stalker "nests" are placed closely and if you place a metal piece near them they fight for it and loose tons of teeth. It ´s funny cause they look so stupid

i think you can have them bite your seamoth(with you in it) and they will break there teeth, i don't know how much damage to the ship it causes but im sure its minimal.

I wonder that sence we can find and hatch stalker eggs. could one place say two or three in a large aquarium and place some metal salavge and see if they go nuts over it droping teeth as they do there thing?

DYK that giving stalkers salvage makes them sometimes give some to you? thats what happened here

P.S. Vladof srsly? if you hit something accidentaly fire a second shot and the current field will disapear

My seamoth got caught in a statis shot... and couldn't move while the field was active. So, careful where you point that thing.
