Basic Navigation
By bacon
(WIP: Still needs formatting, Screenshots, and a Decent amount left to type up, but it might help some people out in this state so...) Learn some basic navigation to help make your time in Hurtworld more fun and less a World of Hurt. Much of this is copied from a Rust Guide I wrote back when there was only "Legacy". It should hopefully be more in depth (or atleast more easier to understand than that guide. And specific to hurtworld so expect to see landmarks and such at some point.

Cardinal Directions (North, South, East and West)
Establishing East and West
The Sun rises in the East Falls in the West. This should be your mantra in any game, until they stop following the rules of earth, then we are all screwed. If you weren't paying attention if it was just night or not, there is an easy way to tell which direction is which, even at noon.

Put your aimpoint on any edge of the sun, don't bump your mouse for a few seconds, and the direction of the sun becomes obvious.

North and South
Now that we know which direction is east and west, north and south are easy. If the sun is rising, North puts the sun on your right shoulder, South and the sun is on your left shoulder. Sun setting? The opposite.

>NTS: Put a Diagram here<

It helps to think if you were standing in your characters spot. Each cardinal direction happens at 90 degrees. 180 degrees is the same as turning and facing the opposite way. 360 degrees and you're looking in the same direction that you were previously. Putting the sun or any landmark on a shoulder, achieves the same thing as making a 90 degree turn (as far as the sun and going north/south).

Beyond Cardinal
Beyond the cardinal directions further divisions can be made, however they may not be quite as useful and its more likely that one person is going to split the difference differently than another.

Ordinal Directions: NE, SE, SW, NW
Ordinals are between two cardinal directions.

Taking it one step further splits can be made between cardinals and ordinals: NNE, ENE, ESE, SSE, SSW, WSW, WNW, NNW.
External Maps
I will be adding town-names and landmarks in a few days.

Biome Landmarks
The Biome transitions can be a great landmarker, especially if you have other information (landmarks) to go off of.

Starting Area, Lakebed
Ground textures appear to be dried out lakebed. Spawn right on the edge of this and the Lowlands.

Lowlands
Lowlands are easy to notice because its really the first real biome you're going to spend much time in, made up of Rocks on hillsides, valleys, and large branching trees.

Frost
The Frost biome is similar to the lowlands, however the trees change to conifers, and the grass takes on a frosted appearance.

Radiated
Rocks, and lots of radiation. GG.

Dunes
Easy to notice because of the barren appearance, golden sandy dunes and a random aircraft carrier are all you get for landmarks. However ore nodes are plentiful and you can usually see biomes surrounding, or a clear view of the sun or moon to pick a direction and run to another biome.

Red Desert
Easily differentiated from surrounding biomes by the red colored sand. And different than dunes via rocks and more vegetation around.

Snow
The snow biome is very similar to frost. Except the ground is completely covered in a layer of snow, and trees have snow on them.
Distinguishable Locations (Non-Player Structures)
Aircraft Carrier - Dunes
The only real obvious landmarker in the Desert Biome is this aircraft carrier sitting on the dunes.

Airfield - Red Desert

Crossroads - Red Desert

Valley - Lowlands/Frost Edge

Fortress - Frost

Sphere - Frost

Transit - Snow

Boonies - Snow

Topographic Landmarks
Arches - Lowlands
The only easy topographic landmark is a set of rock arches that is visible from spawn and a good portion of the map.

Trench - Frost
The trench is a much less visible and off the beaten path. Also covered over the top by rocks.

Beyond the above two its down to memorizing rock formations and relating based on landmarks.
Describing Locations
For the love of everything, don't describe your location as "By the rocks with the trees". Even not knowing the map very well you can describe your location far better than that, especially if you have a reference point. Even saying "I'm in the Snow" is more helpful, as you and your friends learn the map better it'll be easier to say what rocks you are near, before then you have to include more information.

  • Include what biome you are in.
  • The road covers much of the map, find a distinct bend or fork.
  • Radtowns are also easy.
  • Direction based off any landmark you can note.

Example: "I am in the rocks directly west of the northernmost split in the Red Desert"
Finding Your Friends
Putting it All Together
Knowing Cardinal directions, landmarks, and biomes can all help you accurately identify your location on the map.
Livemap.io - For Those Who Find The Above to be too Hard
This section in January.

Basically sign in through steam to get your location displayed. Friends /share <playername>, and they will be displayed on the map. Makes it very simple to find each other, especially with a second monitor.

Nice one. The rock arch is the one that I used most as a freshie, good screen grab of it.
