Nice graphic/sound mods for Payday 2
Von Milkshaker
The community has done a lot of great work, which deserves to be noticed and enjoyed! I want to share the fun I have with these mods. Many people don't realize how easily Payday2 can be modded without changing or breaking gameplay.

Summary (TL;DR version)
These are cosmetic mods (client side, they only change representation on *your* PC). Gameplay not affected! They use mod_overrides (explained below), no mod tool needed. These are *not* LUA mods, they won't cause crashes or cause bugs like HoxHud etc.
The sample screenshots often show multiple mods at the same time.

Get these, they are awesome and must-have:

Tired of the same old blue and green cops? Get the Murkywater Response[modwork.shop] pack for a nice complete retexture of the enemy units. Recommended!

Also, you absolutely have to try Hawk's Gun Sound Pack[modwork.shop] and the Valve Weapon Sound Pack[modwork.shop] - it will be a completely new experience for your ears! I find gunfights to be much more atmospheric with these, and since I've tried, I wouldn't want to play without them.

Appendix - How do 'Mod Overrides' work?
  • They are simply additional files. The original game files are not changed!
  • No mod tool needed - everything can be done with Windows Explorer (or any other file tool).
  • Go to the folder C:\Steam\steamapps\common\PAYDAY 2\assets (note: your installation path may vary). In the 'assets' folder, create a subfolder "mod_overrides".
Basically, Payday 2 will find files in the mod_overrides folder, and use them instead of default files. It's based on file's paths and names, so you can simply disable mods by renaming single files or complete folders.
  • Within 'mod_overrides', you can have freely named subfolders.
  • Within these subfolders, paths and file names must reflect the PD2 file structure to work.
Example:
C:\Steam\steamapps\common\PAYDAY 2\assets\mod_overrides\ --> this part = fixed location MyDrillScreen\ --> this part = any custom name (only on this level) guis\textures\drill_screen_background.texture --> this part must follow PD2 structure DesertHeli\ units\payday2\vehicles\air_vehicle_blackhawk\civilian_helicopter_df.texture
This is very basic and flexible system, which allows you to
a) mix files from different mod packs,
b) disable single files of a mod pack (by renaming, e.g. "abc.texture_OFF") or
c) disable all mods at once, simply by renaming the mod_overides folder (e.g. "mod_overrides_X")

In the main menu, you can use Options > Mods to see which files are active, and check for conflicts from double files.

Appendix - A Note on HUD Icon Mods
The HUD icons for throwable weapons, equipment (ammo, meds etc.) and pick-up items (C4 bags, meth ingredients etc.) don't have separate files for each icon. They are stored in texture files that have multiple icons in one file, arranged in tiles.

Keep this in mind if you use HUD icon mods, this can be an issue when updates or DLCs introduce new items (like the sleeping gas in Big Grin Casino). Your game will probably not crash, but in the modded texture, the icon tile for the new equipment will be empty, so you won't see it in the HUD.

The only fix for this is to temporarily disable (rename) the affected texture file, until the modder comes up with an updated texture that contains the new item.
Appendix - What About HoxHUD / NGBTO?
Well, three things.
1) I think HoxHUD needs no introduction, it's well-known, popular and widely-used.
2) Why would I want "more HUD"? (Just don't get the craze, tbh I'd rather like less HUD.)
3) Issues.
Let me explain.

HoxHUD is not a simple texture replacement. It's a LUA mod, it interacts with the game code, so technically, it's different from mod_overrides; and for that reason, also more problematic and prone to issues. For example, when Golden Grin Casino came out, and HoxHUD users took the mission bag, it would disappear. Just like that. Imagine trying to stealth the damn thing for one hour, and when you finally succeed - poof, bag gone, can't complete the mission. Royal way to get F-ed in the A. (And screwed a lot of people. It's fixed now.)

Think of it like a car. The paint job will not change how the motor drives. Cosmetic mods are just "paintjobs". Mods like HoxHUD are mods to the engine.

So there's that, and personally, I just never found a reason to get into these issues, just to have "more info" on the screen. The HUD has enough info for my taste. Yes, it doesn't show when ECMs run out, but they run 20 - 30 seconds (depending on skills), and start to blink 8 seconds before they run out, so just watch the time display, or look for blue shapes, always worked fine for me, and feels more like the real thing. The military term is "situational awareness".

Actually, I sometimes go the other way, and turn the HUD off (in options) for one mission. Great look and feel. Unfortunately, it also hides the chat, so you better do that when playing with friends, ideally if you all use voice chat (e.g. TeamSpeak).

Sorry, I had almost forgotten about this guide. Mod hub has changed to https://modworkshop.net/
Don't know if I get around to fix this, but you can manually correct the URLs, e.g. the old modwork.shop/1529 now is --> modworkshop.net/mod/1529

I know this is an old guide at this point, but if you could update the mod links that would be nice. A lot of things seem to no longer have the same links

Hi, yes the stormtropper mask needs a mod_overrides version. Unfortunately, LastBullet seems to undergo some organisational changes at the moment. I will postpone uploads until that situation is resolved.

First I used them separate (Hawk's sounds for a long time, then I discovered the Valve pack.)
Actually, I now use a custom mix, I picked my favorite sounds from both mods.
Mango 29. Juli 2016 um 13:01
Do you use both soundpacks at once or both separate?

He asks: it is possible to get banned from the game by installing these mods?
No, you will not get banned (or marked as cheater) for using these mods.

Non, c'est pas possible. mod_overrides sont officiellement approuvé. Tu ne sera pas bannir (ou marqué comme tricheur) en utilisant ces mods.
