Reaction is a free-to-play first person shooter that combines action and realism; with a specific emphasis on action over realism in the spirit of the legendary "Action Quake 2" (AQ2) mod created by the A-Team. Even if you're not familiar with Action Quake 2, the grandfather of all realism mods, it's influence is present in popular FPS games like Counter-Strike; which was created by two notable members of the A-Team, Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jesse "CLIFFE" Cliffe.


Originally developed as a mod for Quake III Arena, Reaction Quake 3 (RQ3) required a Q3A license to play. However, the project was later ported over to the ioQuake3 engine and released in beta form as the standalone game "Reaction" in 2012.

At the time Reaction Quake 3 was first released in 2000, AQ2 was still more popular than any other Q3 realism mod and all other Quake, Quake2 and QuakeWorld mods combined. AQ2 still enjoyed great popularity in online gaming even 4 years after it was initially released; despite the development community labeling it an "obsolete" game engine, it fostered over 500+ community made maps. Many people attribute this long lasting popularity to both the unique gameplay and the AQ2 community.

Reaction was created by AQ2 contributors and fans specifically for gamers who love the unique fast and furious AQ2 gameplay. By harnessing the power of a vastly improved game engine we hope to introduce a new generation of gamers to one of the pioneering classics of the FPS world.

Unique Features

Four different multiplayer game-modes with bot support

Bleeding and Bandaging

There are no health packs or regeneration suits in Reaction. Every shot counts and every hit point matters. If a player is shot with a round that pierces flesh, that player will need to bandage the wound or bleed to death. Bandaging wounds renders a player unable to use weapons until the bandaging is finished.

Location-based damage (with penalties)

Depending on where a player takes damage determines the amount of damage taken. If shot in the leg the player will incur movement penalties and be forced to bandage to regain regular movement speed. Fall damage can also trigger limping. Bullet impacts also feature a knock-back mechanic which is increased if that player is in mid-air during impact.

  • Legs (cause a player to limp impairing their movement speed)
  • Stomach
  • Chest
  • Head

Trickjumps and Jumpkicks

Reaction features the same high speed gameplay as Quake 3 and retains the classic strafe jumping mechanics. Another unique concept is if a player make contact with another player while in mid air it will trigger a drop kick knocking the opponent backwards. Successful dropkicks will also disarm the opponent of his primary weapon.

Unique Weapon and Item System

A unique blend of various weapons and items create class archetypes. Unlike other games that lock players down into specific roles, Reaction allows players to pick and choose which combination of weapon and item best fits their play-style.

  • Silencer (muzzles flash and reduces firing noise)
  • Stealth Slippers (mutes footstep sound)

  • Kevlar Vest (protection from chest damage)
  • Kevlar Helmet (protection from head damage)
  • Bandolier (increased ammo and IR vision)

Development Roadmap

Reaction is powered by a heavily modified Quake 3 engine; the product of over a decades worth of development. The beta release is fully functional and playable; although it has a limited number of playable maps.

We hope to release the next version of Reaction exclusively on Steam and showcase the engine’s potential. The main areas of focus for Reaction:
