Some OOC stuff before we begin
Right hello everyone! First of all, thank's for joining Cortex, On behalf of all of the playerbase and staff we give you the warmest welcome into our great community*.
Some things to note: No. We're not a DarkRP server/community The only thing us and DarkRP have in common is we use a DarkRP base (You'll notice the absense of Clockwork and Nutscript). This allows for more freedom and while it can take some Serious Roleplay ellements away, I personally enjoy the change of scenery.

My name is Redhunter and I'm a regular on the server(s). No I am not staff and neither am I a donator (I'm heartless I know). I've created this guide in my own freetime to show to everyone how to get started and how to successfully play on our Semi-Serious server.

You can find our website here: http://cortexcommunity.com/
Workshop Collection is here: http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=538085406

*Exceptions may apply

Rules, Well obviously...
Yes... I know you're going to skip this section. But I'm putting it in for those who actually care and wish to understand the server, I'll make it quick.

1. No inappropriate language is allowed on the server whether it be in the text chat or voice. No swearing at all is allowed.
2. Do not be disrespectful or hateful to other players and members of staff. Of course you can roleplay some disrespect here and there, but actual disrespect towards any other players will not be tolerated.
3. Advertising on the server is strictly prohibited unless it is for use in a roleplay situation. You can advertise something you are roleplaying, but you just advertise another server, an unrelated addon you like, or things alike.
4. Do not attempt to prop kill, prop block or prop climb.
5. Do not randomly deathmatch players; every kill must have a reason.
6. Please report bugs and exploits to an admin and do not attempt to abuse them.
7. Bunnyhopping and use of the physgun when not building is not allowed. The physgun is not "real" during roleplay. When you use the physgun/toolgun/gravity gun, a small notification will appear, informing you that they only should be used during building. Neither of the three tools were available to Black Mesa at the time.
8. New Life Rule; If you character dies then you must start a new life with no previous memories. You can of course keep your name and get the same job, but you cannot just inform everyone where something has happened.
9. Do not attempt to lag or crash the server.
10. This is an English server, so please use English only in both text chat and voice chat. Using other languages can confuse other players. Any non-english talking is not tolerated.
11. Please respect an admin's decision. If you have a problem with it then raise a complaint at Aerolite.ovh.
12. Do not metagame - Using out of character information in character. The same goes for using in-character information out-of-character.
13. Please set appropriate roleplay names and do not use popular game/TV/movie names. No names like "Gabe Newell", "Wallace Breen", or "Barack Obama" are allowed. Non-names such as "your mother" or "Bob the cool guy" aren't allowed either.
14. Not all rules are listed here as many are common sense. These rules may be updated at any time without notice. I may not update my list if this happens.

Breaking any rule can result in a ban, and all bans are permanent. The Cortex community is very active, and will not hesitate to file ban request if you break their rules.
Should you be banned, you can appeal for an unban on the forums, just as you can make your own ban requests.

Now that I've got that out the way, let's begin.
Welcome, Welcome to City 17's Industrial District
So... You've taken the train from who knows where and have reached your stop at City 17's Heavily Polluted, Heavily corru- Eh... nothing, sorry sir!
Right where was I, oh yeah City 17's industrial district. Here you will find yourself in only the most disgusting... I mean beautiful architecture the city has to offer!

You begin your journey by remembering your name, my... it has been a long journey. Then you shall wander out the glorious station and into a small street with two paths through either Checkpoint 1 or Checkpoint 2.
Entering Checkpoint 1 will find you in a back alley, with tiny terraced shops and nothing else to it.
Entering Checkpoint 2 will bring you to the main plaza, where you can marvel at the majestic site of the Nexpis- I mean Nexus.

-----OOC: There are plenty of interesting areas in City 17's Industrial district such as, The plaza, The nexus, The sewers, Shell beach and the construction site to name a few. But there's plenty more and truth be told I haven't seen all of the city yet!------

There you shall begin your journey as a citizen working their way through the city which begins our next section...
Citizens
"Every good citizen adds to the strength of a nation."
Gordon B. Hinckley

The most standard thing you'll see on the streets of City 17 is the citizen. Usually a cheerful person who's out to do their daily errands and such.
Most citizens can handle themselves quite well and are known to have specialities which they keep to themselves unless they happen to be employed by the CWU (See next section for info).

When it really boils down to it. There's nothing that much really interesti-

*MESSAGE INTERRUPTED!*
Hey you! You're like me. You want to change things around here right?

My name's Francis, Francis Agincourt I'm a member of the notorious rebel group, the deathly brotherhood. Look pal, you see all these lockers around town? Yeah, those are our suit lockers,
[/previewimg]we've got plenty of spare outfits and such for the conspiring citizen.
Remember these invaders don't play nice and I bet the poor kid having to write this stuff is being forced into it. Ahh crap, they're putting this back online, look I'll see you in a few seg-

*CONNECTION ONLINE*

Odd... the servers locked up for a minute, sorry about that oh yes, anyway where was I?
Something about citizens... ah forget it, moving on to the next part.
The Civil Worker's Union (CWU)
"The first requisite of a good citizen is that he shall be able and willing to pull his own weight."
Theodore Roosevelt

When our Benefactors*cough*Invaders*cough* Took over from our weak minded goverments, they made the wise decision to establish a formal Worker's Union to well... unite workers in their well... work. (As you can tell I'm not good with words).

This new Union was named The Civil Worker's Union or CWU for short. Their mission: To be there to provide and assist others in any way they can.

There are many different types of specialities in the CWU, ranging from simple cleaning and cooking to experts in medicine and care.

The CWU are the ones who keep the city going and are always looking for new members to join in any sort of speciality.
And if you're lucky, You may be lucky enough to help the Universal Union!
The Combine Civil Authority (CCA)
"The police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence."
Robert Peel

*ATTENTION: Due to the City Discretion Act, I am not allowed to upload any photos of combine units, All I was able to show is the recruiter inside the nexus.*

Continuing on from our CWU is another everyday and common sight to see in the district.

Please welcome the Combine Civil Authority or CCA. The Combine Civil Authority are tasked with policing and enforcement of Community Regulation as set by the Universal Union. The Combine Civil Authority are notorious for their severe maltreatment of Citizens as well as their harsh intimidating methods. The Combine Civil Authority rely heavily on beatings to increase fear among the general population of City 17's Industrial District.

The CCA are usually just citizens who enlist but eventually they become more brainwashed and more robot like they get. However on the good... I mean eh, bad side. Rebel units have been known to sneak into the CCA and perform covert actions from within. However a rogue unit can't risk being brainwashed so they tend to stick from Ground unit 02 and below.
Speaking of ranks, that moves us onto the next part:

Depending on your XP you will have access to said ranks in order.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rct - A citizen in a suit, nothing else.
05 - The lowest form of ground units are these guys.
04 - Finally getting somewhere are the 04's they're usually just standard foot units.
03 - Eventually these guys get in the routine of things and are finally making somewhat of a name for themselves.
02 - Slight brainwashing commences at this stage, but units can still be rogue.
01 - More brainwashing begins and the unit starts to forget their original self.
OfC - Congratulations! You're now an officer and can be in charge of some of the lower units.
EpU - An Elite Protection Unit is a role-model for all the other units to look up to.
DvL - A division leader is the prince of the pond, a man/woman of high ranking authority and everyone looks up to them.
CmD - There are only two commanders ever in a city and are usually promoted for killing Anti-Citizen one.
SeC- There is only ever one Sectorial Commander and only speak in the clearest tone due to their brainwashing.

Well that was fun, right onto our next system which are divisions. Each unit can choose their rank and division but can of course, change these at any time by talking to the combine recruiter inside the nexus.

Divisions are as follows
-----------------------------------
Union - The common street unit. The ones who tell you to pick up that can.
Helix - The medics. These guys can open up the Rations Distribution Center and are the main healing force on the field.
JURY - The torturers. These guys are prison guards and brutal torturers. You'll find them in the prison or patrolling the nexus.
GHOST - The snipers. These guys patrol the catwalks with their plasma rifles, ready to pounce on any rebel scum, they also move fast.
PRESSURE - The cleanup squad. An incident occurs and you've came out on top, send in the pressure to mop up any remaining anti-citizens.

Next we move onto the higher roles that we have to offer such as...
The Overwatch
Well we're approaching the end and here we move onto The Overwatch.

"A soldier will fight long and hard for a bit of colored ribbon."
Napoleon Bonaparte

Eh... that quote isn't the best way to descri- Wait... No I never wrote that, no... no sir it's ju-

*MESSAGE INTERRUPTED*

Right, I'm back. Poor kid, I placed that quote in here. Well at least I can get on to explaining our top enemies when it comes down to it.

Meet the overwatch.

These nasty guys are the biggest and baddest of all the combine forces on earth.
Those guys crouching down are Overwatch Soldiers, brainwashed into hating everything against the normal and are tough to kill. According to my reports, these guys enjoy hanging around the nexus and going on rebel stronghold raids anytime they can.

These guy's don't play nice and enjoy watching us suffer at their hands, but they pale in signifigance to their superiors.
Please welcome, the overwatch elites. See the guy with the white suit and the red eye, yup that's him. Well when I say him I mean it. These humans have gone so far into their brainwashing that every human thought in their mind is gone. Now filled with Combine propaganda, they seek to destroy everything that stands in the unions way, which includes you and me.

I've got some details first hand from when I went rogue. These guys are placed into divisions different from the CCA's. ((Up to the player to decide what they wish to be called, it can be anything from MIDNIGHT to TUNA.))

As they are the best of the best, most of them are instructed to defend the administrator in his office from all threats... like me.

And believe me, it's almost impossible to take these guys down. Their armor is thick, their training is excellent and they've got the best weaponry in the whole damn union!

Anyway... in short, If you see one of 'em, stay away if you want to live.
The Puppet, Oh sorry... Administrator.
"An administrator in a bureaucratic world is a man who can feel big by merging his non-entity in an abstraction. A real person in touch with real things inspires terror in him."
Marshall McLuhan

*CONNECTION OFFLINE*
Mr. McLuhan is 100% correct about this. Right, looks like I have full control of this now. Enough of the propaganda, let's get down to the nitty gritty. This guy has no power whatsoever. He pretends he has power, but he really doesn't. Frankly, they actually have less power than the citizens. At least they can go outside to do things. I would feel sorry for this guy if he wasn't busy worshipping those damn invaders all day.

If he tried to rebel, one of the ""benefactors"" will simply come in his office and remove him. Permanently...

The only good thing I see about being an administrator is they actually get paid! Surprisingly some administrators even go out and do some TV shows with comedy sketches!

Not funny comedy sketches... but comedy sketches either way.

Ahh... Damn it! They've found me. Look, just find others show them thi- Get your damn hands off me! QUICK! DON'T LET THIS FALL INTO THEIR HA-
Quick Section on IC groups.
In addition to official jobs, players often make and join in-character groups. These groups range from specialized CWU workers to the underground rebels of the FAUB

While player-made groups are allowed, it is important to remember that these groups must abide by standard rules of their jobs, unless permitted not to by an admin.

Group members who are VIPs often use the /job VIP command to alter their job name ("FAUB Private" being an example), making them easily identifiable.
Community
Here at Aerolite, We are one big family. We have our own website, forum and there's always someone their to answer your questions. That's what I've always liked about Aerolite. There's a sense of belonging. You don't get that with the bigger servers/networks, Which I find sad.

However I have to end on a happy note so here you go everyone!

My thank you list!
Thank you, you and you. But not you, yeah you...
Here's my thank you list for those who helped create the server and make it what it is today.

A big thank you so much to...

-James - Our resident owner and always there to cheer us up!
-G00gle - Who needs the CCA when you have this guys to do the policing!
-Datamats - Our resident developer!

Of course I singled out names here but they're no more important than everyone else who has supported the server through the years and made it prosper into the community we know today!

Oh and of course, Thank you for reading my guide. I really appreciate it that you've read it through and we welcome you to Cortex's Half Life 2 RP server.
