You need to feed your cubs, of course! They can't go through life without eating anything!

Rabbits

Rabbits are the main food for your cubs. Catching rabbits is easy once you've played Shelter 2 for a while. You can sorta tell where they're going to go. If you run up to them near their right side, they'll go left, if you come up on their left side, they'll eventually go right.

Colors: Brown, White, Brown & White (rarely)

Spawn: All Maps

Feeds: 2 Cubs

Can Be Caught By Older Cubs: Yes

Types: N/A

Lemmings

Lemmings are simple prey. They tend to run in straight lines out of a hole in the ground towards another hole. But if there is a rock or tree in the way they'll go around it.
If you stand right in front of them they'll keep going-- right into your jaws! They're very plentiful in most areas but, sadly, they don't spawn in winter.

Colors: Brown

Spawn: Forest, Lake, Mountains

Feeds: 1 Cub

Can Be Caught By Older Cubs: Yes

Types: N/A

Frogs

Frogs hop around croaking until you come near them, then they turn around and hop away. They stop spawning in autumn and winter. Note: It's actually possible to catch a frog without running.

Colors: Green, Golden (rarely)

Spawn: Forest, Lake, Mountains

Feeds: 1 Cub

Can Be Caught By Older Cubs: Yes

Types: N/A

Grouse/Pheasant

Grouse are birds the size of pheasants if no one knows what they are, they cluck and walk around occasionally pecking the ground. If you scare them or give chase they let out loud screeches while they run away from you. After running about 5 seconds they'll flap their wings and in about 5 more seconds they'll start to fly away. And if you're close enough, and they are in the air, jump and you'll catch it.
Pheasant, female Grouse, and male Grouse:

Colors: Black (male grouse), Brown W/ White Chest (female grouse), Brown W/ Green Head (pheasant), Golden Eyes (rarely, pheasant)

Spawn: Mountains (grouse, pheasant), Forest (pheasant), Lake (pheasant, grouse)

Feeds: 3 Cubs

Can Be Caught By Older Cubs: Yes

Types: Male Grouse, Female Grouse

Deer

Deer move in herds and occasionally stop to graze.
The best way to catch them is to come up from behind them, or from the side, when they're looking away from you, or grazing. If you're close enough (and fast enough), you can run forward and press space to pounce on them before they can even move. The other deer in the herd will let out throaty yelps and dash away.
Once, with full energy, I've managed to catch and kill 4 deer in the same herd, without stopping. Challenge yourself and see how good you can get!

Colors: Brown

Spawn: Mountains (Musk Deer, Regular Deer), Tundra (Regular Deer) Lake (Musk Deer)

Feeds: All Cubs

Can Be Caught By Older Cubs: No

Types: Musk Deer, Regular Deer

Chamois

They are some kind of antelope, but they move and act the same as deer.

Pronounced: (Sham-wa)

Colors: Dark Brown

Spawn: Northern Tundra, Northwestern side of the Mountains

Feeds: All Cubs

Can Be Caught By Older Cubs: No

Types: N/A

Eggs

Eggs spawn in maps pretty much anywhere. Some are pheasant, grouse, duck, swan (those four I'm guessing, anyway), and owl eggs.
Most of the time it's easy to find owl eggs. If you hear an owl hooting look up in trees. You might see one sitting in a tree with a nest full of eggs just below it. Walk up to the tree and left click to shake it. The nest will then fall out of the tree.

Predators
You're not at the top of the food chain in Shelter 2. You're pretty high, but of course, no matter what animal you are, there will always be dangers. You need to protect your cubs from wolves, bears, foxes, eagles, starvation, fires... and the Lonesome Fog.

Wolves

Wolves are predators that will eat your cubs.
Once you enter the Tundra you'll notice plateaus everywhere. You can jump up on them by getting near them and pressing space. Your cubs will teleport with you (except on Survival Mode, unless they're older), but still, it's best to look for big plateaus then get in the middle of those, then your cubs will have a higher chance of getting up there with you.
After about 5-15 minutes once you entered the Tundra, the sky will go dark and most of the animals will run away (some will stay by glitch), followed by an eerie howling. When that happens you know it's time to get up on a plateau! If you are still on the ground the wolves will knock you out, and when you get up one of your cubs is missing. If you are safe on a plateau and one or more cubs are still on the ground, the wolves will pick up one cub and run away. Sometimes, you'll see them wandering around the Tundra.
Wolves are very glitchy sometimes. I have had 3 Wolf Glitches happen to me. (Also, sorry about how the wolves are so well camouflaged in these pictures.)

Colors: White, Gray

Spawn: Tundra

Killable: No

Feeds: N/A

Way To Avoid: Jump On A Plateau, Leave the Area

Types: Alpha (white), Others (gray)

Bears

To be honest, Bears probably aren't the most dangerous predator in the game. They won't attack you once they spot you, but just wander around aimlessly, scaring all the prey. If you get close enough to them they'll rear up on their hind legs and roar. That's when you run.
If you jump up on a plateau, you'll be good since bears can't jump that high, but if there aren't any in sight, you can outrun the bear. They'll knock you out if they catch you and might make some of your cubs collapse with hunger.

Colors: Brown, White (Tundra)

Spawn: Mountains, Tundra, Lake (in the forests)

Killable: No

Feeds: N/A

Way To Avoid: Plateau, Don't Get Close, Outrun Them

Types: Brown Bear, Polar Bear (Tundra)

Eagles

When you hear its screeching cry, call your cubs to you and look up quickly. Guess who's back from Shelter 1? The Eagle. Back for more.
It'll circle around you once or twice until it swoops in, picking up one of your cubs. But don't worry. The sudden weight of the cub makes the Eagle stay near the ground for a few seconds, giving you enough time to turn around and pounce on the Eagle, saving your crying cub.

An Eagle's attempt to eat one of my cubs:

Colors: White

Spawn: All Maps

Killable: Yes

Feeds: All Cubs

Way To Avoid: Jump On It When It Lands, Go Into Your Den

Types: N/A

Fox

Guess what? Foxes are back from Shelter! Once again they are prey, but also predator. When you hear twigs snapping look behind you. A fox might be coming closer to you, so call your cubs nearer to you and wait for the fox to get close (not too close!) then chase after it. Try to scare it near some rocks then it will panic and run straight at you. Your Lynx will knock it over, causing it to slide a little ways away. But it will be dead.
And always, always make sure your Lynx is facing the fox or else it will get closer, and closer, then run at you and snatch one of your cubs.
This happened to me before. A fox came out from behind a rock and snatched one of my cubs but luckily for me it ran straight into a wall and turned around and I hit it, dead. But anyway foxes are really fast but they slow down if they're carrying a cub.

This fox picked up my gray cub and ran off, but I managed to catch up to it:

Colors: Red, White (Tundra)

Spawn: Mountains, Forest, Tundra

Killable: Yes

Feeds: All Cubs

Way To Avoid: Chase After It About 3 Times Or Kill It

Types: Red Fox, Arctic Fox (Tundra Only)
Dangers
Let's see how good of a mother you are by protecting and feeding your cubs! If you're having trouble, or just wanted to read this guide for tips, then you're in the right place.

The Lonesome Fog

Also known as the Blob, The Lonesome fog tends comes out of the water and there is only a small part of land left on the map once it spreads as far as it can go, so always get to the highest ground you can find and you should be good; it doesn't happen in winter.
Also, if you end up in the Fog, don't panic. Call your cubs close to you and don't move. That way, none of your cubs will fall behind and your cubs will be safe.

"Do not be afraid of the dangers of the world, or The Lonesome Fog could come. It comes for all with fear in their hearts."
-Quote from The Lonesome Fog book

Spawns: Forest, Lake (And possibly Mountains...? Read about that in the comments below)

Kills: 1 Cub

Duration: 3 Minutes (Maybe? Not sure)

Happens Without Cubs: No

Fire

The sky will grow dark. Lightning will strike the ground right beside you. Run. If you don't, kiss your cubs goodbye.
If you run as soon as the sky grows dark, you'll be out of energy by the time lightning strikes if you've run in the wrong direction. Sometimes it's best to wait for it to strike, and then run in the opposite direction until you're out of energy, then look behind you. Hopefully, all of your cubs have followed you and the fire is flaming in just one spot. You can rest now, the fire is almost over. Soon, rain will fall and the fire will be put out.
If one or more of your cubs gets stuck in the fire, you'll hear shrieking and then instantly rain will fall and the fire will be put out. One of your cubs has burned to death. RIP. The others will be fine, but one of the cubs in the fire will be randomly chosen to die. Note: A fire usually starts around autumn. There'll be no fires in winter.

Spawns: Mountains, Lake, Forest

Kills: 1 Cub

Duration: Depends (2 Minutes, Maybe)

Happens Without Cubs: Yes
The Secret
You wanna know what my secret is? Well, one time one of my cubs collapsed with hunger. I picked it up and spotted some rabbits nearby, but my energy was too low to catch them. I was near a swamp so I drank water to boost up my energy and all of my cubs drank, even the downed cub. Then, when I had enough energy, I caught 2 rabbits and all 4 cubs were standing up waiting for me.
So the secret is that if a cub collapses with hunger and you bring it over to water and drink, it will get up and drink, then follow you around for a while until it collapses with hunger again, then you can do the same thing over and over.

The Special Secret Is: Water!

That's it! I hope you enjoyed my guide. It's long but I hope it's helpful!

Suprised you dont know about the very rare polar bear in the tundra it only spawns in winter as far as ive seen and is basically the same as the grizzly, besides the fur ofc.

@CelestialTheEclipseWing yes, eagles, bears, and foxes are only in the game once you purchase the Mountains DLC. However, I believe there is an option to turn off the new predators but still enjoy the Mountain biome c:

I'm wondering if foxes and eagles only spawn with the mountains DLC? Because I've been scared to add it to my game again after... the incident was when I had first downloaded the DLC. I had barely started when I heard an eagle, he swooped down and took one of my cubs, thankfully, I paused the game, collected myself, and then killed him. After my cubs had eaten the eagle a fox came and snatched the same one who had almost been taken by the Eagle, since I've been scared to add it again, is it only in the DLC or in normal Shelter 2, too?

For me the fire starts *every* fall. No matter what I do. I think it's a mechanic to stop you from hunting too much in an area, because the fire always starts in whatever forest is closest to me.

WOW! Ive known and played this game for over 8 months and had NO IDEA that there were bears and fire in this game, I guess i haven't explored enough.
Lammergeier  [author] Dec 9, 2021 @ 8:51am
It does that sometimes, a fire started the second it turned fall for me once.

KitsuneLee Nov 28, 2021 @ 4:52pm
