Quick Introduction
NOTE: This strategy also works for defending against Fredbear in Night 6 and Nightmare in Night 7 & 8.

Hey, if you're here, you've probably been trying at Night 5 for a while and Fredbear has killed you each time. You might be tearing your hair out trying to figure out how to defeat this dreaded yellow animatronic. Or, you're just here to try and see if this strategy works as good as yours or not. Well, for no matter what reason you're here, I have a good strategy that you can use that will make Night 5 a lot less hard!

We're gonna break this into a couple of sections - The Basic Strategy and Fredbear's Laughs. So let's get started!
The Basic Strategy
So if you're not aware already, Fredbear does not breathe at the doors like the other animatronics do, so once you get to a door, you can flash your light or close the door right away - No need to listen for breathing.

Another thing you need to get out of your system before trying to do this strategy is using the flashlight in the hallway every time you go to door. This is pointless while defending against Fredbear. All you need are your ears (a good pair of headphones helps, too!).

So the basic strategy is as follows:

  • Listen for Fredbear's footsteps. Once you hear them, run to the door in the direction he ran to.
  • Once you get to the door that he ran to, close the door IMMEDIATELY. Don't flash your light.
  • Keep the door closed until you hear Fredbear either a) move to the other hallway or b) laugh
  • If you hear Fredbear move to the other hallway, open the door that you're currently at and move to the other door and close the door.
  • If you hear him laugh, well that can mean one of three things. And I'll go over that in the next section, which is...
Fredbear's Laughs
So you hear Fredbear laugh while either holding the door closed, moving from one door to the other, or whatever you're doing (as far as I can see, he can laugh at any time). You might be a bit confused to what this means. Well, I am too. I haven't found a sure fire meaning to what his laughs means, but I have a general idea and a way to deal with it.

  • If Fredbear laughs while you are at the door he just moved in to, quickly flash the light in the hallway to see if he is there. And when I say quickly, I mean like, less than half a second. If you flash the light for too long and he happens to be in the hallway, he will jumpscare. If Fredbear is in the hallway you just flashed, close the door and resume the strategy as normal.
  • If Fredbear is NOT in the hallway, he can be in one of three places - the bed, the closet, or the other hallway. Generally, I find when Fredbear laughs he appears in the bed or the closet, so I check those two first, in that order (bed then closet).
  • If you see Fredbear on the bed, turn on the light and keep it on until he disappears. Then, continue the strategy as normal.
  • If Fredbear is not on the bed, check the closet (once again by flashing quickly). If he is in the closet, close the door and wait until you hear his footsteps moving in the hallways again. After hearing this, continue the strategy like normal.
  • If he is not in the closet, now you have a warrant to worry. Check the other hallway (or alternatively, if you heard him move around in the hallways while checking the bed or the closet, move to the hallway he moved to) and immediately close the door and keep it closed. From here, pray that you hear his footsteps move in the hallway. If you do, adjust your character's position accordingly and continue the strategy like normal. If Fredbear is not in the hallway (signified by the fact that you either never hear his footsteps, or you get deaded), chances are you're probably dead. Rippo in peperroni. Now suck it up and try again!
Quick Notes
This really doesn't justify an extra section, but I feel like I should point this out.

Sometimes, Fredbear takes a long time to move from one hallway to another. Don't let this fool you. You may stay at a door for a long time (I've stayed at one door without him moving for up to 10 seconds), but don't freak out and change the strategy around (ie opening the door after closing it and flashing the light to check, or moving doors). Chances are, doing this will get you killed. Just be patient and wait - If you listened correctly and you're holding the right door closed, Fredbear WILL eventually move and you can continue like normal.

TL;DR for quick notes - Don't freak out if stuff starts happening differently. Just stay calm ;)
Ending Statements
Following these steps, you should be able to beat Night 5 fairly easy! It may take a few tries, but it should be fairly easy. If you want to see someone do this strategy in action, there's a video on YouTube that showcases it that's just down below!

Good luck to everyone, and happy defending!
