Long Grind Multiplayer Achievements via Solo Play (Bioshock 2)
By Murphy's Lawyer
You can unlock the map-based and rank-based multiplayer achievements in private matches, despite the achievement descriptions claiming they require you to play “non-private” matches. With this method you can earn the long-grind multiplayer achievements in solo play, both quickly and efficiently.

Introduction
Bioshock 2 multiplayer had the potential to be fun, but it never will be. There isn't a strong player base at all, and most newcomers will be quickly deterred. Half the time you want to play, you won’t be able to find any other people playing. And the times you actually do find others online: there's a good chance most of those people will be toxic players. Of course some of them were nice enough people, but it was my experience that a disproportionate percentage of the people I regularly encountered in “pubs” were either: trolls, keyboard warriors, cheaters, or angry children. Any adult gamer will quickly see it isn't worth his or her time.

Fortunately, most of the grinding achievements that would otherwise require you to endure hours of the painful multiplayer experience can be farmed in private matches, by yourself, quickly and efficiently— even though the achievement descriptions clearly state they must be accomplished in "non-private" matches. It is boring, but you will actually gain XP faster than playing online, without needing to find or deal with other players.

This may be due to a bug, or it may be because the "non-private" qualifiers on the achievement descriptions are actually leftover from the GFWL era, or the console versions. They most likely were originally put there as an attempt to stimulate the online community by forcing people to play match-making. If it is a bug, and you are the type of person who generally wouldn't feel comfortable earning achievements via exploiting bugs: then you will have to decide for yourself if this crosses the line for you.
Methodology and Achievements
First thing you are going to want to do is start up multiplayer and start a private match. Set the game type to ADAM Grab. Now play and win one round on each of the maps. All you will need to do is grab the Little Sister and wait for 3 minutes to pass and you will win. This is by far the quickest way. After that, you will have to find a real match (i.e.: a public match) and you will need to play one game (you might need to win it, but I’m not positive), this will cause it to check for achievements and award you:

Man About Town – (Played at least one non-private match on each multiplayer map.)

Aqua Incognita – (Played at least one non-private match on each downloadable content map.)

Territorial – (Won a non-private match in each of the 6 new maps.)

-----------------------------------------

Now for the real grind. You must reach level 50 and “Rebirth” to get all the achievements related to your multiplayer rank. The same method you used for the map achievements is viable here. Pick a small map and play ADAM Grab by yourself. You should get over 1000 ADAM every round, with each round lasting about 4 minutes (including stoppage and loading times). This will net you over 15,000 ADAM an hour and is far-and-away the quickest way to level up your multiplayer rank. This method is effective, but boring; so, I suggest you do this while watching TV or something. Be aware that you will not earn the achievements until you play through a real match and cause the game to check for achievements. Using this method, or a combination of this method and actually playing, you will quickly unlock the following achievements:

Parasite – (Achieved Rank 10.)

Little Moth – (Achieved Rank 20.)

Skin Job – (Achieved Rank 30.)

Choose the Impossible – (Achieved Rank 40.)

Reincarnation – (Used Rebirth to start again!)

-----------------------------------------

Based on some brief experimentation I conducted with my friend, it would appear the other multiplayer achievements that only require a singular action (kill a Big Daddy, capture a Little Sister) will actually need to be accomplished in real public matches.

Join the multiplayer discord, they'll send out a notification whenever someone is hosting a public match, usually every day and they fill pretty often. Of course you'll be playing against experienced players most of the time just due to the age of the game.

This is a good guide for farm ADAM/XP. But as the guide author themselves says: it is a boring process. I'm finding myself sitting my butt down waiting for each match to get over. I'm impatient I know.

I propose an alternative method to make the grind more interactive and less boring. Here goes:

1) Start an ADAM Grab match in a private lobby
2) Go grab the Little Sister
3) (Optional) Explore the map.
4) (Optional) If you see a turret or vending machine, hack it. Then pick up the Little Sister again.
5) Once you've held the Little Sister for 2 minutes, end the match. You will still get the Match Standing Bonus as well as additional ADAM XP. I get around 500 ADAM every match this way.
6) Wanna go even faster? Start a private match, quit, repeat. This gets you the 200 XP Match Standing Bonus anyway.
7) Go play some public matches and get some achievements to pop up.
8) Check out the Trials section in the game menu. Find a buddy in the forums. Do the Easy trials with them.

Two important notes for those still trying to get this work!

1. Regarding rank related achievements: be sure to NOT use Rebirth option until you have played at least one public match being level 40+ because after rebirth you will essentially become rank 1, so you won't get all the rank achievements and will have to rank up till 40 again!

2. Regarding map related achievements: I've seen people complaining here that it doesn't work, and I found the reason why: you should basically do needed public match activity in the same session as you did your private matches activity, so exiting/crashing out of the game will reset map progression, and you will not receive map related achievements when winning/playing public match.

Hope it will save your time, folks. It would also be good if the author would update the guide and emphasize on that.

I boldfaced that part to make it more noticeable for future readers.

Your best (and only) bet will be to post on the forums looking for a partner to boost the last few things (and the grind ones will pop once you play with that person).

Also try posting on achievement hunting forums for anyone who wants to boost.

@limathompson I just noticed that the guide actually mentions this, so that's my bad for skimming it! Guess I'll try later but I've only ever seen a lobby with 1 person in it
