Introduction
Please forgive any formating or errors in general. This is my first time writing a guide for something since it is rare that I am the first to come across anything, even if I discover something on my own. I have been playing HGen for a bit now and think I have come up with a few insights that might help others on their path to glory. If anyone else has something to add please dont be shy. I know this is an early (early) release title and will (undoubtedly) go through many changes as it grows with it's community, so I will pop back in here and there to make changes to this as needed.

This guide will be a place people can find all sorts of information (when completed) like special map features, trait specifics, items, tactics, and special town layouts to assist their character growth. From super breeder towns to forts set up for battle hardening you hero (to murder bosses). If you can't find it here, ask the questions here and I'm sure someone will have an answer (then the guide will have the answer!).

Also please don't bash grammar natzis or format nutters here because I welcome their constructive criticizm. Anything that will help me communicate the finer points to my fellow gamers is always a good thing.
Hotkeys!
Here are some keys you can use to make your trek to the volcano a little more hassle free.

WASD and arrows can be used to move.

1-6: When on a town building square these can be used to quick select structures to build (or demolish, watch that 1 key).

1&2: When not on a town building square these can quick drop the items in your inventory. Word of caution, be careful not to accidentaly drop your Triblade Sword and not notice until you are on the next map wielding a train ticket in battle. It happened!

Q: Toggle the quest map.

B: Toggle for special towns info screen. If you have a special town formula not listed here please inform us in the comments section below.

Space: Stay in the same space for a year (Lazy!).

Enter: Executes most commands (starts combat, messages boxes, etc).

+ / - : Audio volume because trying to simultaniously spawn your next gen in game and real life takes a bit of mood setting. 30000 Fame Gained!

0: Mute so your boss doesn't know you are not working on that TPS report!

ESC: Brings up menu
Basic Training
Yes, every pro has started with the basics and so shall we. The strategy side of the game relys heavily on the urban sprawl you build up as you adventure along. Your young adventurer must rise up from the SLUMS if you hope to be a true hero.

Slums are just the begining, with no buildings in it's adjacent fields. Once you build a structure it will immediately upgrade into a village, taking on attributes (discussed later) from the type of building you have added. Don't stop there though! Work your way up to a thriving metropolis and gain more health, wealth, and more!
  1. Slum
  2. Village
  3. Town
  4. Metropolis
Unfortunately there are towns that end up with only 3 slots. I haven't seen any with less but that's not to say it is not possible. Sections down the line will outline special combinations that produce special towns with outstanding benefits.

Even shy heros who peddle around their home town end up meeting challangers who want to end your family line or at least smack you around for your lunch money. Knowing a little about how combat works might just let you live long enough to see a second generation or eat today. There are three starts which are influential in combat.
  1. Strength
  2. Damage
  3. Lifespan
When attacking, the game picks a random number from 0 to max strength, of you and the opponent. Which ever is higher overpowers his opponent and gets past defenses with a strike. If you won the rolls, your damage stat will be subtracted from your opponents lifespan. If you didn't win the roll, you may begin nerd raging now! If the rolls were equal, both of you are pushed away from the combat zone.

Once lifespan, for any reason, reaches 0 you or the evil blighter who tried to crush your skull is no longer a part of this world. Hey, dont forget to check his pockets ... what ... not like he's gona need it. This combat mechanic is very "Risk-like" as it gives a moderate importance to strength and still allows a sizable margin of victory for the underdog.

Want to increase your odds and turn your opponents into the underdog? Get your daddy's sword and shield when he grows too old to lift it. Weapons will not increase your minimum strength, but they do add a secondary roll seed which gives a slight increase to your chances of not hitting 0. Shields work on the other side of combat. It the enemy gets past your defenses, it reduces the damage that is done to your lifespan. There are also a few weapons like bombs and the scythe that add to the damage of successful strikes (random 0 - #).

I plan to edit in alot more data here concerning each structure and their effects on a town. Though there will be a new section for other key catagories like cultures, items, mating, and what might effect mate traits.

General Guidlines for Success!
Priority one, even when just starting, is to look at where your town is located with its terrain and position on the map. You want to pick the sections you will need to revisit many times and place those buildings on the sides of the town which are more acessible as you move through the map accomplishing other tasks. If there is a square that is surrounded on 2 or 3 sides by impassable terrain and you dont think you will want to waste years moving through that area, use it for the buildings that you will not need to step on to collect gold/buffs (smith, monument, tavern, ect...). Once you know the gerneral layout of your map, pick routes for efficiency and put your more traveled buildings on those (farm, wonder, barracks, academy, ect...)

Your first town will probably be a hastily built "do it all" to get started. Something that will produce some wealth for expansion, potential for breeding, and some combat preperation. Once you are more established, it will get changed up. Your last slot will depend on your needs. I tend to go for an extra farm for more money to set up my second town quicker.

  1. Farm
  2. District
  3. Barracks
  4. Any above

You will notice that later in the game my last slot is always reserved for the blacksmith. It is a big waste of years, time played, and inventory/trait slot for hammer/construction to run around every town you've build up repairing the buildings. Even if you were immortal with the best hammer in the game you could not maintain more than a few towns without putting a blacksmith in town. I believe the dev recognizes this and might be why the special combinations that produce specialty towns only require 2-3 of certain buildings. If you happen to run into a pair of towns that share a space as I have, then the blacksmith fills this spot perfectly!

Now that you have estabilshed your self as a regions hero, lets talk about crafting towns to produce specific benefits ... or you could go with the god mode method of making every town a hospital. Unless there are only 3 slots, then you just lay out 2 temples or make it a training location for combat with a stronghold and acadamy. Streamline your move path to make a 16 step loop through 3 hospitals and net a gain in lifespan becoming immortal as long as you are williing to invest a ton of time.
Top Breed Garanteed
The first town on any horny heros aggenda should be a breeder town. There are many interesting combinations, but I have only found one so far that will garantee success and with the highest tier (Stunning) of eligable mates. The unfortunate part is, you will need to surive long enough to reach the generations to unlock all of it's necessary components. In the mean time, a young hero fresh on the trail is recommended to make use of the Hospital special town. Check its section for more details.
  1. Wonder (Garantees mate will be rare)
  2. Monument (Garantees mate will love you)
  3. Circus (4 extra card flips when mating)
  4. Smith (Never need to repair buildings your self)

With this set, you will get good offspring even under the worst of circumstances. No need to worry about being rich, famous, strong, or have lots of years left. Just pick the one super mate and get working on your next generation! Also might be concidered the lazy casanovas paradise heh.
Hamlet
The hamlet is the basic starter town because it is cheep to build and it gives you the maximum number of potential mates per town (3). This town gives a small gift tribute every 10 years which reduces mating requirements a bit. I recommend a hospital as your beginer mating town over this.
  1. Temple
  2. District
  3. District
Level 2 Family Culture (3 Mates)
Mates favor fame and have a variety of traits.
Not sure what the highest tier of mate is since I never kept it that long, though I've seen a beauty there for sure.
Ranch
The ranch is an early game money making MACHINE! It produces a (BROKEN) farmer trait book as a tribute every 10 years, trait gives you 25% more gold from farms. Farms also get a boost to their gold production for each potential mate in a town so if you have a fourth slot and not using a blacksmith yet, pop in a district or tavern. When you get into the higher generations, this money maker will eventualy be replaced.
  1. Farm
  2. Farm
  3. Farm
Level 3 Money Culture (1 Mate).
Mates favor the wealthy and tend to have the farmer trait.
Not sure what the highest tier of mate is here.
Hospital
The hospital has 2 good uses. It gives you a +3 or 4 lifespan tribute every 10 years. If you get lucky like I did though and happen to have clustered towns nearly on top of each other, then you could build a few hospitals and do a loop and gain infinite lifespan. That would in turn let you get infinate what ever you want! Of course you will want to put blacksmiths in their last slots so they get infinate repairs too. They also make outstanding starter towns for breeding as they get high chances for the lifeblood trait which improves lifespan cards during mating.
  1. Temple
  2. Temple
  3. Temple
Level 3 Wisdom Culture (1 Mate).
Mates favor the strong and often have lifeblood trait.
Highest tier mate is a rare beauty.

Dev dont wrecking this because it takes alot of time to set up, and without this possability the hospital and temples are completely useless in mid to late game ... and I'll kick a puppy.
Also, there is a bug with tributes that causes them to delay a year or so at times because the game spawns an opponent on the town (bug is for all tributes in a town not just this one). Not sure if the 3-4 aspect was ment to be a random or a bug, but I never noticed that until 17 April 2015.
Fort
The fort is a young bloods go to set up for training to handle the first boss. Barracks receive a +1 strength bonus when they are connected to a fort. The fort also gives a tribute of a woorden sword. For an aspiring hero, this can mean the difference of life and death (which can be handed down to your child like in the faery tails!). This means a nice new toy that boosts attack strength by an additional 0-5 and 16 strength boost every 10 years.
  1. Barracks
  2. Barracks
  3. Barracks

This will be replaced later by a fortress.
Keep
The keep is the end all of combat strength training. It also gives a tribute of a wooden shield every 10 years. The only shield I recomend using (MUST GET) is the sun shield which lets you safely walk on lava and water as well as provices a 0-12 loss of life prevention if you loose in combat. For this reason I find making the keep un-necessary. It doesn't even give the strongholds a bonus like the fort does for barracks (though I hope that changes in the future). That means your combat training town could be comprised of other structures such as an acadamy to boost your damage on successful strike or built on a 3 slot town.
  1. Stronghold
  2. Stronghold
  3. Stronghold

Other conciderations might be a monument to ensure you get a stunning mate in town in case you wish to use this as a means to get combat traits for your offspring. Though I do not recommend building an expensive keep and using a monument instead of the blacksmith, because it's effort comsuming to repair it or rebuild it after it collapses.
Port
The port isn't that useful but it does make sense and adds some flavor if you have extra towns or want to build up a theme world. It gives a wooden raft tribute every 10 years and keeps the lights on for every generation.
  1. Lighthouse
  2. Lighthouse
  3. Lighthouse

Wow just realized this looks like a pirate base! None of this picture was realy planned out, that raft just happen to be there already.
Builder Bay
The builder bay gives a wooden hammer tribute every 10 years. This one, sad to say, seems not well thought out. You would think something that is comprised of observatories would give the ability to reveal the whole map to all generations and this ability would go to a town with a set of blacksmiths. O well, useless as far as I can tell but it does look lovely.
  1. Observatory
  2. Observatory
  3. Observatory

If anyone is wondering why there are orphans at the base of each observatory, it's because I was offering them up to the aliens to come down and reveal how the heck we are sapposed to handle the volcano god!
Golden Shrine
The golden shrine (once debugged) will be a staple in every Hero's kingdom! It gives a tribute of a golden child skill book every 10 years. You will want both of your traits to be swapped to these just before mating! This is an expensive one to build though.
  1. Monument
  2. Monument
  3. Monument

Any trait book tribute is currently bugged. Schools give only 1 type chosen by who knows what randomness and sticks with it no matter how many you seem to build. The golden shrine seems to act like a big school at the moment, not offering the golden child trait.
Market
The market has been discovered by Truegreen (thanks for the graphic) but I have yet to test it due to it's requirement of a station. Stations currently can not be removed like other structures and didn't want to muck up my map with unwanted structures I can not get rid of. It tributes 900 gold per 10 years and gives no notable benefits, so it might be better to go with building any other town and use a momument which gives 1,200 gold every 15 years. This means you dont have to come back as often to pick up your money and can spend that time visiting distant towns before you come back to collect.
  1. District
  2. Farm
  3. Station
Kingdom
The kingdom forms when you gain 12,000 fame in a single generation. It turns your home town into a castle. Castles give a scepter tribute every 10 years. Scepters give you two abilities, one is the ability to flee from a fight with no loss of reputation and the other is a bonus to fame gained for winning fights. Good item if you are a prize fighter who doesn't mind giving up your sword for the abilities but never give up your sun shield for ANYTHING!

Level 5 Wisdom Culture (1 Mate)
I'm sure there has to be something special about the mating here but I have not noticed it yet.

Screen shot in editing
Monolith
The Monolith is a special town and the only one located on the Volcano map. It is surrounded by 4 alters and plays host to a demonic sex slave who can only mate with a hero who has earned 30k fame. This can be reduced significantly with charmer traits and mating gifts. This mate offers the rarest trait of all, chosen, which can be received in both trait slots to doubel the effect. It is a great mid game trait to pick up, giving you a good start for your offspring.
  • +50 Lifespan
  • +50 Strength
The 4 alters surrounding the Monolith can be lit by bringing a baby orphan or relic from another map. Once you light all 4 relics, it will add a small number of generations to the timer before it spawns the evil volcano god. (Bringing a relic from another map puts a turn in relic quest on your map log, which can't be cleared) Warning, mating with the sex slave at the Monolith will always reset the timer to 1 generation until the boss spawns, though if you continualy mate there it will stay at 1 forever!

The volcano god is a vicious bugger which can be a challange for all but the mighty. Only 15 lifespawn but a sizable 160 strength and a combat boost that puts it up to 250 which I didn't see until I went in for the kill and lost a few rounds before getting the only strike I needed to save the world. I recommend bringing a shield of vengence or sun shield along in case RNGesus hates you. This boss packs a whopping 20 damade if you fail.
Special Map Locations
SWORD IN THE STONE

This special location will be one you will come back to again and again as in time it pops back up with a new weapon after so many years. Each time you visit the stone when it glows, you get a map quest completion bonus of 2,000 Fame and a random weapon or shield. This can be as weak as a wooden shield or as strong as an emerald sword. I have visited this hundreds of times but I doubt I've seen every item it can offer so give it a try and see if you can find some rare goodies.

Trade Caravan

Sometimes you will find a caravan spawn crawling around a map. This is a mobile shop and as far as I can see holds no special benefit over standard shops (other than possible convenience or frustration with it's movements).

Airship

The airship is like a mobile station. If you catch it, you can get a free ride to the middle of other maps. I do not recommend using this though, unless you have already been around the world a bit and have the muscle to survive in the wilds.

Fountain of Youth

The fountain of youth offers a 50 lifespan boost when you enter it. I have not yet seen it respawn after the first use like the Sword in the Stone does. This is a nice early game boost when you are just out exploring but concider it's use in your overall strategy.

Witches Culdron

The had that mans the culdron is willing to offer you random traits in exchange for 5 years of your life. Not a bad deal but not realy a good one either heh. RNGesus if often unkind and I doubt you will get the traits you would want without spending half your life to try.
Bugz, Broken Mechanics, and BAD BAD BAD
STATIONS DANGER!
Seems there has been a slight design flaw with the kingdom's passage buildings. Once built, I see no way to demolish or change them unless you wait the long time to naturally degrade to nothing (will not heppen if the town has a blacksmith). Until this is fixed, I recommend caution when choosing to erect these structures.

Note the building on the northern plot of town, yea that will be there for a VERY long time!

ITEM LOST GLITCH
Sometimes when you move between maps, one of your items gets swapped with something else. I've seen this happen twice so far (though I play alot so that means it has a low occurance rate). The item that was in your hand is lost forever, and the item that is in your hand was laying on the floor somewhere on the map you move to.

ANCIENT STATUE
Any time you step on the ancient statue, the game will lock you in place (not crash but can not move). If this happens to you, exit the game and reload. It has not yet saved that move and you will be right back where you were. Tested this one to death and since the save data patch I haven't had a problem with recovery but still haven't been able to put the ancient statue to use.

TRAIT BOOKS
Any and all player built facilities which give trait books as tribute, will not give their intended trait books. They all give the same trait book (for me that was haggling).

PRIZE FIGHTER?
When fighting the wannabes that spawn from towns and roam the map, they do not give money even when killed off unless you have the thief trait. Though if you wait until they are dead due to age as they roam the map, their graves do give you money.
Thanks Contributors BIG & small!
HSG who made a fun game!
Truegreen (Temple mating tips / Market configuration)
jakeopotomus (Hotkeys)

I'll even thanks RNGesus for all the times we didn't roll a 0!

Okay I think I became the bad guy. There is nothing left in the world to do. I just go around and murder adventures in my endless quest for everlasting life for a game that has no end. Maybe that is the true ending... To make you reflect on how your quest to save the world can turn you into a horible monster.

So this is a really great guide. I really really enjoyed this game. But there is something... just kind of broken in it. If you just want to win the game at your leasure all you have to really do is this... 1. Build a Dark citadel. 2. Double Stack Vampirc trait. 3. Never... ever upgrade your damage (upgrade your strength your hearts content) I currently have a character that is 700 years old and has 550 strenght... I cleared all the quest in all worlds with just him.

The respawn was only rescently fixed. The sickles adds to combat damage 0-15 (not combat power), sun shield lets you walk on water and lava, though shield of revenge is a little bit better since it lets you fly over rocks too.

Im still trying to figure out what all the items do, like the sickle, and the sun shield.
That link has all the town stuff though.

Also: succubus thing, its still there after beating the volcano boss. Crashed the game when I tried to mate her, but that could just have been my impatiance.

The Volcano boss doesn't actually leave the volcano, even after -11 generations.

Fountain of youth does respawn, after 500 turns. Just give it time. Lots and lots of time.

Sorry I haven't updated in a few weeks. Waiting on a few more updates before I delve back in. Give the dev some time to flesh out some more before I start putting up more info.
Darkluv  [autor] 27 kwietnia 2015 o 14:59
Ok I tried relics and it did light the alter but it also left a turn in relic quest in the log even though there was no relic left to turn in. Plus the volcano doesn't have it's own natural relics so not sure how the quest populates on that map when I brought a relic in from another map. Couple that with me bringing another in just to see if it cleared it, and it did not.

Yea she's a trap, but when I kept mating with her the counter never dropped. (Enter inuendo here).
drattis 26 kwietnia 2015 o 14:04
I sacrificed 4 orphans and the counter of the boss raised up by 5 (3 --> 8), than i mated with the demon and the counter went down to 1.
Darkluv  [autor] 26 kwietnia 2015 o 0:05
Good one, was so focused on sacraficing orphan babies that I didn't concider trying relics.
