  • Build MK II until you get the mods you want.
    • [Pen] can only be build (Rarity upgraded can get you: [Dmg] [Acc] [CrtD] [CrtH)]
You need build [Dmg]x2 [Pen] to get [Dmg]x3 [Pen]
    • Mods are random you'll get good mods for every 100-500 build
  • Apply [Superior Experimental Tech Upgrade] to the weapon.
    • You should get to MK VII-VIII with one experimental upgrade
    • If you don't get the rarity upgrade with one experimental upgrade, Do not try to upgrade the weapon further (It's too expensive and the rarity chance is too low)
    • Do check if it's worth selling on the exchange
  • If you get a rarity upgrade with the mod you want from MK II to MK VII-VIII (Ex. [Dmg]x3 [Pen])
continue to upgrade it to tier MK XIV
That is it. If anyone have any suggestions to improve the guide, let me know in the comments...

CritD is for critwhores only. Real builds don't rely on crits to do damage. The day will come with Aux2Bat and CritD are nerfed, or the likes of Dmg are buffed again.

Useful for beginners like I was a few months ago. [Dmg]x3 or x4 is definitely what you want to aim for if you don't have high base crit chance or don't yet have the funds or the desire to get Vulnerability Locators from Fleet stores. These consoles and base crit chance is what makes CrtD more effective than Dmg.

Thank you for your comments

I'll try to update the guide to be more generic ASAP :)

@Sajelk: forget tricobalts, they have been nerfed into uselessness, as with most nerfs have been. Not to mention its slow, and has a destructible projectile. If you want a heavy hitting torpedo, get an enhanced biomolecular torpedo from the counter command rep, and use it with any rank of high yield. Its almost as fast as unbuffed torpedo, doesnt have a destructible projectile, and I hit for 20-30k on average with it in ISAs, with a record hit of 186k (with high yield II) with pretty much nothing buffing it (though it is mk XIV).
To answer your question though, yes, you could theoretically get Dmgx4 tricos.

Recent changes to DMG mod have changed the meta for certain captains. For details refer to the links provided in "The numbers" section here: https://www.reddit.com/r/stobuilds/wiki/build_anatomy/weapons/mods
Your guide is still relevant, and I even think you could expand it to cover any mod combo or piece of equipment that gains mod, as the method you described is the most cost efficient way to gain desired mods, and also to upgrade item rarity.

the Tricobalt isnt a unique item, its just a torpedo type
that fires basically Heavy Plasma all the time
GoldenGnu  [author] Jun 1, 2015 @ 2:45pm
I'm not sure.

Some of the unique stuff like OMEGA set, Fleets items, etc. don't get random mods, but, always get the same mods when upgraded.

Special R&D items like [Arc] Cannons, always start out with the same mods (if I remember right) and I'm not sure if they get a random mod when upgraded.

Wait, dosen't that mean that Dmg x4 Tricobalt could be possible?
Not like Tricobalt needs extra damage lol
GoldenGnu  [author] Jun 1, 2015 @ 9:39am
Yes, that should be possible. Just start out with [Dmg]x3 and get lucky and get [Dmg] again when upgrading it. I would not recommend it, though. [Dmg] is only good for leveling. :)

[CrtD]x3 [Pen] is considered the best combo and [CrtD]x4 second best.

can you get Dmg x4 like CrtD x4?
