imagine it like making a verified twitter account while there are other fake accounts. but on the open source you can clearly see which one is fake and which one is the original

So... if I were to upload my own fanart, nobody would be able to repost it? Correct me if I'm wrong.

NFTs are based on blockchain technology, its an open source code open for everyone to read, suppose this gif would be a NFT it would be embeddedinto the blockchain, and whereever you show it it would simply display the creator of that NFT.
in simple terms:
imagine i posted this, but in the description there would be always a link automatically posted which would lead to the creators profile and also say that the creator made this picture. so no matter where it is it can not be replicated or forged. ofc you can copy it and create on your own, but since the artist has a verified following and such the original collection would also be verified on every website and always lead back to the open source code where the name of the original creator is displayed.its basically a public signature which can not be removed or copied and its in code.

How exactly? I'm curious.

i didnt know that, i didnt even know who the artist was. in the end it doesnt really matter tbh. no one gains anything from this except himself by getting more exposure. i guess once its uploaded on the internet it cant be avoided, but NFT's solve these kind of issues.
