What the Treasure Hunts Are
There are currently four "Treasure Hunt" missions in X Rebirth, the goal of these missions to gather loot from across the the X Rebirth Core Universe (The DLC region doesn't contain any rare loot to find aside from those found via Random Drops). There are currently 4 of these in game; Ancient Relic Collection, Kha'ak Relic Collection, Rare Engine, and Space Egg Collection.
Where to Find Them and Why
There is a 40% chance of finding these missions in any sector you visit, they will be marked with a Light Bulb Icon and found somewhere on the outside of each station, like a normal mission.

Each of them offers you two rewards (you pick one); cash, or unique upgrades.
What You are Doing
The purpose of the Treasure Hunt is to find the individual pieces scattered around the Universe, and then assemble them using the Crafting Interface, before turning them in to whichever NPC assigned you the Mission.

Even before starting the Treasure Hunt Missions you may begin to find the parts necessary to craft the Treasure itself, these parts are found either in cargo canisters stored in Loot Crates (shown below) scattered across the Universe. Or as random drops from destroyed ships and asteroids.

Some of these Loot Crates will be hidden in the nooks and crannies of stations, others in empty space, or in asteroid fields.

When you find one of these Loot Crates you need to shoot the locks off (the red parts shown in the image above) without destroying the entire crate, and then pick up the cargo cannister that flies out.

(Be careful with Loot Crates placed close to other objects, the ejected cannister can sometimes clip into station geometry rendering them impossible to get, as seen in this video. When a crate is close to another object make sure to place yourself between the crate's door and the other object.)

As of 3.5. if a loot crate near a station ejects it's contents into the station geometry, you can activate the Loot Magnet (default key is O) to pull the crate through the station to you.
Tips and Tricks
  • Use an Advanced Scanner or Police Scanner, they use different colour pings to show you the value of the item scanned
  • Space is 3D, don't forget to scan up and down
  • Take notes on what systems you've scanned so you don't miss one.
  • Pay attention to Random Drops, there is a pattern to what drops what. (I know this is obvious. But mentioned for clarity sake.)
  • The Crate Magnet introduced in 3.5 (bound to the O (as in oh, not zero) by default) makes picking up crates extremely easy and quick. If you use it while moving there is a risk of having the crate fly past you and head off away from you.
  • Collect all the missions, then compare the rewards before turning them in. There are some duplicates, so you may as well make sure you are maximizing your reward.
  • After completing the Rare Engine, and Spacefly Egg Collection mission. You may find them again for additional rewards.

@[DGM]sarriann, one of the patches introduced a mechanic that causes some of the crates to float away from where they are supposed to be, scan the surrounding area looking for the golden ping.

Hopefully tomorrow I'll remember to update this guide with that info... but right now my cold medication is kicking in.

I seek for the last missing item of the kha'ak collection, the talon. But i can't find it. I searched informations on youtube and google, and it seems the talon isn't there ... Spoil: i'm ine the destroyed water tank of MA:SV:2, but there's no container in there. What should i do?

@kelmenwong: That is exactly what I was trying to say! =D

And I avoid using the magnet when moving. If you miss the crate it can be flung out and get even farther away.

i think i understand what u mean now, crate can pass through station/solid object

it's probably when i try to suck it with the magnet, it fly pass me, but being in the cave, i can't see.

@Kelmenwong

I just loaded up a fresh save. Opened the container and let the cargo float through the station Geometry. I activated the container magnet and the stuff flew right through the station and into my cargo hold. So I'm not sure what happened with your game.
kelmenwong Jul 13, 2015 @ 5:04am
i did, it didn't work. the item is ejected into a rock
have to reload earlier game

this is for the treasue hidden in the asteroid rock, the one near the starting compaign plot

@kelmenwong Try using the Container Magnet (activated by the O key by default). It should pull the cargo right back at you through the station.
kelmenwong Jul 12, 2015 @ 6:07pm
ejected cannister can sometimes clip into station geometry rendering them impossible to get
this still happened in 3.53

I can understand that. :)
