IJN Light Carrier Kaga (Work In progress)

***PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE END OF THIS POST BEFORE TRYING TO USE IT!***

Ive received a few requests to publish this ship, so have decided to release it in its current state (it needs some cosmetic work on the interior and I expect to make changes as the game develops, however it is functional in its current state).

This is a scale replica of the Imperial Japanese Navy Carrier, Kaga, as it originally entered service in 1928. It is a player controlled ship carrying 11 x B2M1 bi-planes with various roles. Its armament is based on the original ship with a few augmentations to improve its usefullness in FtD.

(Brief) History:

Kaga was originally laid down as a Tosa-class battleship but was redesigned as an aircraft carrier when the Washington Naval Treaty came into effect, preventing Japan from increasing the number of battleships in service.

Kaga had a unique lay out consisting of three flight decks, the middle deck being so short it was impractical to use for anything but the smallest recon bi-planes. Another unusual design feature was the long funnels which ran down the side of the ship below the top flight deck to (in theory) divert hot exhaust gases, smoke and fumes away from the flight deck...

As aircraft carrier doctrine was still evolving at this time, she had a heavy gun armament in case she was engaged by enemy cruisers - although completely impractical in real warfare, in FtD this gives Kaga a very impressive amount of fire power!


Armament:
2 x Dual 200mm guns on the middle flight deck
6 x 200mm guns in casemates aft
6 x twin 120mm model A2 Gun mounts in side sponsons.
10 x twin 25mm anti aircraft guns
5 x B2M1 biplanes - Fighters
4 x B2M1 biplanes - Bombers
2 x B2M1 biplanes - Torpedo bombers

Additional armament (not on the real thing):

As cannons are utterly ineffective as AAA weapons in FtD Ive fitted a rack of simple missiles firing vertically above the flight deck to prevent shrikes taking the p**s.
Additionally 2 torpedo launchers have been fitted below the middle flight deck as She has real problems firing all guns when fighters are launching ( see below)
The fighter wing has been fitted with small rockets as there are no effective machine guns available in game and fitting cannons to a drone this small is nearly impossible.
Kaga has plenty of repair tentacles that will heal her fighters and friendly vehicles nearby, she also has minimal resource extraction equipment on the rear cranes.

Defence:
Kaga has laser and missile defence (despite being historically inaccurate - she is too expensive to let her get Shriked to death early game)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:

There is no naval AI on the ship itself as it needs to stop to launch fighters and it is vital you know which direction the enemy are coming from in relation to the ships facing (see below)

Guns are all AI controlled and prioritised... 200mm guns will go for ships, 120mm will go for planes and fast ships, 25mm go for aircraft. there is no fire control computer as it just gets messy and the guns are spread so far apart it is impossible to manually fire them effectively.

Planes are battery powered and have limited ammo, They will recharge and refill when docked.

Planes are divided into numbered squadrons:
Red 1-5 are Fighters (Top deck rear)
Green 1-4 are Bombers (Top Deck Front)
Blue 1-2 are Torp Bombers (Lower Deck front)

Launch fighters in number order: ie Red 1, then Red 2, then Red 3.... etc
If you launch red 5 before red 3 has gone, it will crash into the back of it!

However, fighters can still launch while the bombers are docked. Allow time for each fighter to clear the deck and gain some distance, bunched up fighters tend to shoot each other or crash.

To launch a Fighter, press "C" and select "Release Dock" from the buttons listed next to its name... ensure it is set to COMBAT mode before releasing, or it will just drop onto the deck.

To dock a fighter, press "C" and select "Apply Dock"

"O" and "L" key will extend the resource cranes on the rear (not necessary for them to work)


IMPORTANT: THINGS THAT DONT WORK QUITE RIGHT:

Game limitations cause several issues:
1) Kaga is capable of about 15m/s without fighters docked, however with planes aboard, the bouncing motion of the fighters can cause her to slow down and even list to one side at speed.

2) Due to the movement of the fighters while the carrier is moving DO NOT try to launch fighters while the carrier is in motion as they WILL CRASH.

3) Be careful launching fighters too quickly as they will collide or shoot each other

4) Also be careful launching fighters when enemy targets are behind you, the planes will execute a hard roll and will likely hit other planes and/or the carrier deck

5) Recovering fighters can be hazardous as the safe range on the docking points is often ignored, resulting in a fighter becoming lodged uder or in the hull and slowly flipping the ship over.

6) Kaga chucks out an impressive wall of shells when her guns are active, as the Failsafes do not see her fighters, it is advisable to turn off the guns while the planes take off, or you will probably shoot down half the squadron with "friendly" fire.

7) Trackers Detectors and Radar are fitted but dont seem to do anything currently (though the spinning radar dish will give you some map visibility in campaign - These systems will be reworked when fully implemented

8) Fighters are docked at 15 degree inclination and 2 metres off the deck to prevent the drones; pushing the ship over / exploding when taking off / warping through the deck / spawning under the ship / psuhing the carrier under water when docking etc etc etc <insert disaster here>

9) The ships interior IS NOT FINISHED.....

Rising Sun Pack:
This is the seventh vehicle to be added to a collection of Japanese historical models for use in the main campaign. The vehicles in the series will increase in material cost and capability along a time line spanning from the 1920s upto modern day allowing them to be used throughout the campaign as resources become available. I intend to have a complete set of early, mid and late game vehicles supported by a carrier, including light and heavy bombers, fighters, destroyers, patrol boats and other support craft.
