Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi (French: Canal du Midi) is an artificial channel that is located in the Midi region of France. Navigable between the Garonne river, at the time of Toulouse and Sète, the Mediterranean Sea, a distance of 240 km, enables communication between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean.
It was designed in the seventeenth century by Pierre-Paul Riquet, as an economic solution, military and political, to transport goods, avoiding navigation in open water, avoiding the Strait of Gibraltar and the outline of the Iberian peninsula.

Opened in 1681, along its route are three hundred and fifty works of art, including bridges, locks and aqueducts. Passes through regions like Languedoc, Aube and Minerve, and cities of economic and historical importance as Beziers, Narbonne, Toulouse, Le Somail, Homps, Trèbes, Carcassonne and Castelnaudary.

On February 14, 1802, considering the strategic economic advantage of the Midi Canal, in order to systematically disable the Strait of Gibraltar, which was under British rule, and create an alternative route between the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean, the Consulate of France decided to fund an expansion of the channel, increasing its depth and reforming regional bridges and the construction of a series of forts (offshore and onshore). The channel was put under the responsibility of the French Languedoc Overseas Company, which opened the channel for navigation and international trade, setting high taxes and embargoes against non-allied nations of the Empire of France.

    Naval classicism

After the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte, the company's ships were still under construction, and due to the large profit annually by naval trade, the High Council commissioned the construction of a fleet. Upon hearing this, Napoleon Bonaparte sent a letter to the President of the bell, instructing him to "restore the former beauty and glory of French vessels" and giving you permission to build ships with over 80 guns.

In response, the Company hired several artists to draw the sumptuous details of the new ships, based on the classic style of the old regime (Kingdom of France - Absolutist Monarchy), the first ship built was named Napoleon, in honor of the new French Emperor. The fleet was dubbed "Classical Fleet"
