Follow these instructions to reset the configuration for Half-Life 2.

WARNING: This method affects all your savegames too!

Before you start do a backup of your local save games. They are located at :

Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\save
Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\episodic\save
Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\ep2\save

Copy the entire content of these folders to a safe place somewhere for safety resons just in case something goes wrong.

Disable Steam Cloud

1. Disable the Steam Cloud function for Half-Life 2

This deletes the configuration files and savegames at the STEAM servers.

Restart STEAM.

Find and delete the old configuration files

2. Navigate to

for Half-Life 2 :

Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2\cfg 

for Half-Life Episodic 1 :

Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\episodic\cfg 

for Half-Life Episodic 2 :

Steam\SteamApps\common\Half-Life 2\ep2\cfg 

for Half-Life 2 Complete (Merged version):

Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2_complete\cfg\ 

and delete "config.cfg".

WARNING : delete only the file "config.cfg" - other files are required to run HL2.

Creating a new config

Launch Half-Life 2.

Through the lauch process HL2 writes a new config. Then exit the game.

Annotation: Place your autoexec.cfg file here.

Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\hl2_complete\cfg\

Enabling the Steam Cloud

Enable the Steam Cloud function for Half-Life 2.

Restart STEAM.

Finish

Launch Half-Life 2.

Half-Life will upload your local config files and savegames to the Steam servers again.

Test the issue.

sv_unlockedchapters <int> - Unlock or lock chapters in the game. Set to 0 to essentially reset progression, 15 is the last chapter in HL2.

Does it reset achievements? No. Never.

It deletes savegames. added to the guide now for safety reasons. No it doesn't fix the shader bug.
