Step 1: Verify Cache Integrity
A lot of problems can be solved by just veryfing the integrity of the application cache, so before going further, first try that and try recreating the bug:
Go to your Steam browser:

Below your library click on "Games"

Select "Software"

Right click and select properties

Go to the "Local Files" tab and select "Verify Integrity of application cache"

Wait for it to complete and let it download any files it needs.

Now re-open FaceRig and see if it now works, if not continue with the next section.

Step 2: Getting the required files together
To help fix the problems the developers of FaceRig might need certain files.

If you aren't sure, always make and post all three items below
They will always need the VP.log
If you only just installed it, and now it doesn't launch or crashes at launch, we will need the installscript_log.txt and dxdiag info.
If it shows one or multiple error messages we need the contents of that message.

Step 2.1: Getting the "VP.log" file
The VP.log file is created every time you start up FaceRig.
This also means that if you have a crash and start FaceRig again without saving this log somewhere else, the info within isn't the info from when FaceRig crashed the first time around.

To get and save the log file:

Go back to the properties, local files, but this time select "Browse Local Files"

You'll see these files, open the VP.log with something like notepad
Select everything and copy it.

Go to http://pastebin.com and paste the text you just copied there.

Use the following settings and click submit:
  • Syntax highlighting: none
  • Paste experation: 2 weeks
  • Paste exposure: unlisted
  • Paste name / tile: VP.log

You might be asked to solve a Captcha, do so and click submit again.

Look in the address bar and copy the link there, save it somewhere because that is the link we need to look at that log file

Step 2.2: Getting the "installscript_log.txt" file
The installscript_log.txt file is where Steam saves all the installation results.
Do note that there is also a installscript.vdf file and that is a file we do NOT need.

To get and save the log:

Go up a few folders to the "Steam" folder.
Unless you installed it in a different place this folder can be found in "C:\Program Files\Steam" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam".

Open the "logs" folder.

Find the installscript_log.txt file and open it.
Select everything and copy it.

Go back to pastebin and make a new paste (don't forget to save the other paste, or open a new tab / window for this).

Paste the text and select the right settings before submitting.

Again look in the address bar and copy the link there.

Step 2.3: Getting the dxdiag info
The dxdiag info is information about your PC, for example what your CPU/GPU is or what webcam you are using. We need this info to check if you are meeting the minimum requirements for FaceRig (posted on the Store page (http://store.steampowered.com/app/274920)) and so we can easily find the webcam / speaker / etc. information, should we need those.

To get the DXDIAG info:

On your keyboard press the windows-key + r

in the new window type in dxdiag

Wait for the program to complet (the green loading bar should be completely gone and click "save all information"
Save the file somewhere on your PC and open it with notepad
Select everything and copy it

Go back to pastebin again and make a new paste (make sure to have the links copied somewhere safe or use a new window / tab)

Enter the right settings and submit it

Again look in the address bar and copy the link there.

Step 3: Making a bug report
Now that you have all the required info, it is time to post it for the Developers to see, so they can help you.

First go to the "Bugs & Troubleshooting" sub-forum on Steam. Click on "Start a new discussion"

Give it a meaningful title (NOT something like "crash" or "help please")
In the main part, enter the following:
  • What did you do, try to tell us step by step
  • Links to the different files that you made before
  • If it's a crash and it shows a crash-window, copy the contents of that window below the post (this is the only thing that you should copy in the post directly, other things are FAR too large to even fit in the text area.

Final notes
A few final notes with the resolving of bugs:
  • DO NOT post any other info then the crash window directly in the posts, use http://pastebin.com instead. If you aren't sure, just post it on pastebin and only link it here.
  • If your problem has been resolved, please report back in the original post so others know that it was resolved and how. Maybe you are not the only one with the problem so it can be handy to know what you need to do to resolve your problem
  • Developers and moderators need sleep / weekends too, they are a small indie team, supported by two volunteer moderators. This means that they can't be online, helping you with your problems all the time. Please don't bump / repost posts till at least 48 hours have passed. We know you want to use FaceRig and we'll do whatever we can to help you, but none of us are wizards who can resolve problems with a snap of their fingers. Most of the people helping out are in the europe timezones (GMT +1 / +2) if you want to have a guess at when to expect replies.
  • If a developer / mod gives a request for more information, or for you to do something, follow all the steps they give you by the letter and answer all the questions. The longer it takes them to get all the info they need, the longer it takes for you to be able to use FaceRig.

Thanks for reading this guide, I hope it helps, and if you have any tips feel free to add them in the comments

Then you post your problem and note that you did look for the VP.log and installscript_log.txt file but that they weren't there. The VP.log gets created on application launch, so if it crashes before it can launch, there won't be a log, and steam sometimes doesn't create the installscript log file

So what do I do if VP.log and installscript_log.txt don't exist?

If you are looking at it from the steam browser, then yes you can't open two windows. However, you can also open this guide in your normal browser, just go to this page;
