Notes from author
Hello!

I heard that some players have problem with romantic relationship with Hawkins. So I decided to write this guide to help them. You will know how to make them fall in love with your character, how to get achivement "Orlando Innamorato" and how to get Happy End with Hawkins.

It's not real guide, but some notes and advices from my walkthrough. It's not the only way to get achievent, but one of them. If you want to add your notes, please write me a message (private or comment) and I will edit this guide.

And sorry for my English. It's not my native language.

UPD: Edited some notes and added new.
Way to their heart
You should have high percent of Warrior and Deliberation.
Also for first duel it's better to have at least 3 points of Presence. It's not necessary to make it your main stat. You can achieve romance either way.

Episode 3
Accept duel and fight withour your lance.
Talk with Hawkins at least once. Presence 3+ required for this.
You can fight with any weapon and any tactic, but for romance you need to fight really well and recieve this outcome:

Before Hawkins can strike again, you become aware of an incessant beeping. It is only when the Vallier Custom pulls up short that you realize it is coming from the other end of your comm link with the Imperial machine.

The Imperial ace pulls back and sheathes his blade. His expression is almost apologetic as he looks up at you.

"I'm afraid I must cut our dance short, pilot," the Imperial gives you a sad, little grin. "To interrupt our engagement pains me greatly; you are the first to have ever come so close to defeating me. You…fascinate me, pilot."

With that, the Vallier Custom turns around and retreats for the fleeing shapes of the Imperial task force.

"I look forward to our next encounter, pilot."

First Interlude
Search for information about Hawkins and read everything.

Episode 6
Try talking to Hawkins first. Fight won't happen if you have high Presence.
Try to talk even if your presence isn't high enough. After that initiate battle one-on-one and win the duel.

Episode 7
Choose right tactical options. If you do a good work as leader and soldier, Hawkins will be glad about results of battle in Episode 8.
Probably, it's best not to surrender.

Episode 8
Talk with Hawkins every possible time. And ask many questions. Especially “Why are you here/doing that?”
Ask them about “What happened to…”. They will say some pretty words if you were successful in Episode 7.
You should totally agree with them when they ask your opinion. And tell them that you wanna be more than friends. If you don't have this option, you made something wrong before and should replay.
Maybe it’s better to resist to interrogator.
When they offer you gun, you should ask “Why are you doing that?”
Control point
In third Interlude you should totally trust them.
When they offer to answer your questions, agree. You should ask every question.

Attention!!! If you did everything right, you can ask new question: “What will you do after war?” (or something like that). Then you must choose something like “Find someone to live for and fight alongside” (first option). If you did everything right, there will be dialogue like that:

Hawkins takes a step back. Well, he wasn't expecting that, was he?

For a few moments, the other pilot tries to respond, more awkward and nervous than you have ever seen him before. Finally, he manages a reply.

"I-, well, you must understand, I find this all to be very strange. Nobody has ever felt the need to desire a…closeness with me. It is…a risk, I suppose."

You step forward, leaning in, advancing over the ground which your erstwhile partner has conceeded. There is indeed a certain risk to this, but you've learned enough to know that playing cautious with the other pilot will get you nowhere.

"You've taken risks in battle before. Why would this be any different?"

"But this isn't battle!" Hawkins protests, somewhat feebly. "This is all new to me and the risks are different. Perhaps it would be better to discuss this later?"

You take another step forward, so close that your faces are almost touching.

"Why later? Why not now?"

Hawkins looks away. If this had been a battle of wills, you could have easily claimed victory, but in this case…

"Because we are about to go into battle, and it means that one of us could die in it. Because if it did happen, it would be a result of my action, my plan," Hawkins turns to meet your gaze, slowly, hesitatingly, as you've rarely seen him before. "Because for the first time in my life, I'm about to go into a battle afraid that I'll lose someone."

The two of you stand there for a moment, two fingerlengths apart, breathing each other's breath, locked into each other's eyes. Then Hawkins takes a breath, shakes free, and escapes.

"I- I should go."

Before either of you says another word, the other pilot walks away.

If you have this part, you can continue. If not - restart your game or reload checkpoint (choose what is better for you).
Way to achievement
In last Chapter:
  • Encourage your soldiers to fight (first option). Maybe, in this situation you don’t need to defend ships. It’s good.
  • Don’t blame Hawkins. It’s better to choose “If you want a fight, I’ll give it to you”.
  • Agree with them, BUT
  • Initiate battle! But don’t fight! After that you should talk to them and talk about personal (second option). Don’t talk about “you are wrong”.

After that you will get achievement. Congratulations!
Now you can do whatever you want.
Bonus: Achievement "Si Vis Pacem"
By the way you can get achievement "Si Vis Pacem". For this you should do next steps:
  • Use the Lightbearer as a threat to force a cease-fire between both fleets
  • Try to persuade Hawkins to be your ally
  • Say, that you will convince CoDEC to spare them

So now you have Happy End with Hawkins by your side and new achievement. Congratulations!
My Gratitude
I would like to thank some people.

Many thanks to the team of "Choise of Games"[www.choiceofgames.com] and to Paul Wang personally for this amazing game...or book, I am not really sure how to call this. Because it's real literature and I love it.

Thanks to my friend ♥♥ Kommandant Kringle ♥♥. You inspired me to write this guide (my first guide actually) and add it to Steam Community. Thank you!

And thanks to everyone who read it. I hope, this guide was useful for you.

Hello, Imperial-Topaz!
Thanks for telling me about link. It seems Google Drive changed some of its settings or policy, don't know, doesn't really matter.
Anyway, there is a new link for the same old file: Google Drive text file (my choices) [drive.google.com]

I'm not sure if my choices will work on newer versions of game, so I should remind everyone who is reading it that I last played this game in 2016 (for this guide's edit) and didn't really touch it since then. It means some choices may not work properly in your case as they worked in mine. Also it's not the only way to get this route, it's my way to get it; you can always try/find another one. Mainly it's the reason why I didn't want to include my choices in the guide - to let people find their own way of playing even while hunting for achievements.

I love this guide, but I just wanted to say that the google drive you linked in the comments is currently locked.

Hello to you too, KNIDUM! Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad this guide still can help people. Some CoG games were updated and a lot of things with stats are changing from time to time so I wasn't sure if my guide still has at least some credibility. At some point I thought about deleting it but left it as it was. It's good it's helpful enough even after all these years.
P.S. I agree, Paul is amazing!

Hello from 2023, I hope you're doing okay. Wanted to say thank you for this guide, it was quite useful and informative.
P.S. Finished reading game/book 20 minutes ago. Paul is a legend.

And R4d6! Read some other comments. There were some errors in my guidelines. Maybe I didn't fixed them in time. This guide is so old and made actually just for one person. I don't really remember much already from my gameplay experience.

A little offtop: Well, I didn't visited other guide because I didn't need that.

So about "Every choice".
You can find one specific guide already in my old comment. Maybe you should look previous comments for answers before asking questions.

But I will copy my previous answer. And so you know: it's answer from 2016, so if game was updated, some choices may be not right for newer version.

Link to Google Drive [drive.google.com]

Remember:
- it's only one of many ways
- dialogues with other characters isn't necessary even though it's mentioned here. But some options give you warrior and deliberation points. So skip or choose these options - you choice.

If you still have some questions - ask, don't be shy. I'll answer as soon as I can.

Every Choice, like the only other guide

R4d6, how much detail do you want?
Every choice to get the achievement? Or just more specific guidelines?
Aether May 1, 2018 @ 5:36pm
Can you add more detail please?
