Worlds

The first and most impotant thing you will have to do is select the world difficulty. As a new player you will want to play on the easiest difficulty setting.

You will also want to start on a local save. There are a lot of mechanics you will need to learn about this game before you know what you're doing. Jumping in a dedicated server from the start is not a good idea.

One interesting mechanics of this game is that of duality. There are characters credited to your save. There also are worlds. Some are local others are online. The fun part is you can visit any world with any of your characters.
Gliding
One of the most important feature of the game is gliding. A lot of quests involve climbing up a building or a tower. There is a reason for this.

You will unlock spires. Very tall towers you are intended to jump from and glide to a destination. Advanced gliders will be faster and use less stamina. It will make traveling around easier.

The mechanics are simple. You jump and hit A on a gamepad. There is a keyboard equivalent. Then you seer left to right. You will want to tap left or right, i know i was holding the stick. Something important to understand is you can tilt the glide down. Moving towards the ground versus forward will let you land in a safe location instead of trying to make a landing and circling around to lose altitude.
Using a rake

A rake will let you shape terrain while building a base. It is intended to smooth terrain in order to set stuff on it straight.

You can change the tilt of the rake. It will let you shape slopes or flat terrain to your liking.

A rake will not create terrain. It will shape existing one. You may want to create terrain to work with using the construction hammer. You will aim the dot to a section of the terrain and hit X. The terrain will smooth from the dot and outward the longer you hold the button. You may want to tap X for detailed modifications. It is possible to walk while doing this so it's going to be easy to set a large surface doing this. If you walk too fast, the rake will only flatten terrain near the middle of the area. Walking slower will let you shape wider terrain. There is an option for first person view while doing this which is very useful.
Conclusion
This is a crafting intensive game with solid combat. There are a lot of mechanics to learn. These 3 will get you started nicely and let you enjoy the game better.

Have fun!
