Lumière French lyrics and English translation / interpretation

Song: "Lumière / Clair-Obscur" (both tracks share the same lyrics)

Performed by Alice Duport-Percier & Lorien Testard

᠌ ᠌
This song invokes Lutèce (ancient Paris), the Eiffel Tower, and the painting style of Clair-Obscur (Chiaroscuro), reflecting the game’s merging of aesthetic romanticism with a sense of fragile identity.
Some words are difficult to translate due to their lyrical, evocative, and occasionally archaic nature; others are invented, nonsensical terms, crafted and adapted to the lyrics for their musicality and emotional resonance.
Below is a side-by-side presentation of the original French lyrics and my own poetic English translation, followed by detailed notes on my interpretative process.

🖋️ Interpretative Notes ᠌ ᠌

Vacarme᠌: Literally "uproar", in the context of Lumière it likely represents more than just sound, rather a sacred, ritualistic chaotic clamor. Translated as “clamor” to reflect both the noise and the poetic weight of the term, capturing its dual role as atmospheric texture and symbolic expression.

Lutèce séra / Dolilom séram: Lutèce, the ancient Roman name for Paris, evokes both a cultural relic and a fading dream.
The phrase “séra” ("will be") casts this decaying beauty into a timeless, almost sacred future.
“Dolilom” is a made-up, phonetically rich word, likely chosen for its musical cadence and emotional resonance.
Together with "séram", which sounds like a fusion of "sermon" and "serum", the line feels like an invented liturgy: a pseudo-sacred chant mourning the fall of civilization while preserving its echo in song.

Clair-Obscur: Even know as Chiaroscuro, literally “light-dark,” it's a painting technique used by Rembrandt and Caravaggio, greatest exponents of Baroque art. Here it symbolizes duality: beauty vs decay, clarity vs ambiguity.

Gustave / dôme: Likely a reference to Gustave Eiffel, symbol of industrial glory and aesthetic mastery. The dome might refer to Parisian architecture or a celestial metaphor.

Rature: A French term for crossing out words, symbolizing memory loss, uncertainty, and self-erasure.

Guardéo: Neologism combining "guard" and possibly Latin-sounding suffixes. Implies protection and preservation, perhaps of art or identity.

Guide Artwork GIF
This is the full-size, high-quality GIF I created as the guide’s icon.
It is only 414 x 414 pixels because I designed it specifically for use on Steam, which enforces strict limits on file size and dimensions. I animated it on Photoshop, the animation features a delicate red and white petals effect that stays true to the original artwork.

Ah okay that makes much more sense. I shouldn't have assumed the duplicate was intentional. It's mostly because I've seen some cases where people intentionally abuse the system and it completely tarnishes the reach for others. Steam's infrastructure is definitely a bit wonky and outdated in some areas (I've also experienced some technical issues when posting my guides, so I feel ya).

For your first animation it's great! Glad you're helping give this beautiful OST the attention it deserves. Cheers man :er_wave:

As for the 7K comments, I’ve been active on the platform for over a decade, mostly focused on virtual photography. If you check my screenshots section you’ll get an idea.
Posting the guide showed up in my activity feed, and some friends wanted to show support.
Only players who own the game can vote for a guide, so in this case it’s not a like-for-like thing. But I get where the confusion came from, so no hard feelings at all :er_wave:

@Mesolimbic Nice to meet another fellow metalhead! :Killmaster::skull_metal:
Music is one of my greatest passions, and this “playable album” by Léonard Testard with optional gameplay :zaglol: amazed me so much I learned basic animation just to make that GIF.
Listening to the soundtrack on Spotify, I kept thinking: “What a shame the devs didn’t animate the petals.” I had the idea, but not the skills :zaglol: so yeah, painful journey AHAH

Thank you sincerely for reporting the duplicate, I genuinely wasn’t aware.
What happened: the first guide was flagged by Steam’s auto system because I included a GIPHY link (Steam upload limit allow max 5 MB). I asked Valve support, then reuploaded the GIF to the Artwork section and made a new guide.
I didn’t delete the first one It wasn't visible anymore… or so I thought. Editing it must’ve restored it.
I can’t see both versions from my side, so I appreciate the heads-up, I removed the old one to avoid confusion

@Nez'laktor I guess saying you "paid" was jumping to conclusions and a bit of a stretch, so I'm sorry for that. But clearly the comments are inorganic (I assume as part of some like4like system, which I guess isn't inherently against the rules). I mean you also have over 7k random comments on your profile too lol. Not sure if it's bots or what is going on with any of it, but it's none of my business.

Though you may want to double check on that duplicate, because I definitely see two of them listed on Expedition 33's guide page. Sort by "most recent" and you'll see what I mean. Here is a link to a screenshot showing what I mean. [i.ibb.co] Both guides have a different number of comments, likes, etc.

I have no ill will towards you, and as a metalhead myself I appreciate your taste & aesthetic! I was just a bit confused seeing this in the guide section instead of elsewhere, let alone seeing it come up twice.
Nez'lakor  [author] 18 hours ago
@Mesolimbic Really appreciate the nice words about the GIF! :retro_beer:

Just to clarify, my first guide is not listed, you can check the guides section yourself, there’s no duplicate, no spam or cluttering going on, so don’t worry, it’s only visible checking manually the guides on my profile. Thank you for paying a visit, I guess! :er_wave:

Talking about “paying”... not sure if that’s a joke, but I definitely don’t have the money for that lol.
More likely, after 400+ hours in Baldur’s Gate 3, I must have some Ilithid mind-control powers going on here!
Next time I’m in Night City, I’ll pay Viktor a visit to see if he finds any tarpoole in my head. He helped my with the Relic once. But before that, I just hope being a Mind Flayer doesn’t violate any Steam terms and conditions, because I can guarantee you appreciating the soundtrack of a game doesn't break any

Live and let live buddy, have a nice day :LN2Hand:

@February Yeah he probably purchased these likes & comments. None of this is organic.

Not only that, but he posted this exact same "guide" twice for some reason. It's not even a guide, just spam at this point. Not sure if Valve does anything about this type of stuff, but cluttering the guides page with stuff like this hurts actual guide makers.

Your gif is nice but come on bro, this isn't really the place to show off a gif and links to the OST.

What? All these people leaving you hearts, I've checked the profile of like 10 of them (to see how it's supposed to look like) and none have this gif in their profile, lol.
