Tips for unlocking new skills
You earn a point for every item crafted by a blacksmith. Depending on the quality of the item, you'll receive different kinds of points.

You'll need the following amount of points to max out the Mastery Tree:
  • Common - 1,293
  • Uncommon - 2,000
  • Rare - 3,050
  • Epic - 8,450
  • Legendary 11,500
That's a total of 26,293 points (generated from making 26,293 items)

Points from a higher tier can be used to unlock skills from a lower tier. For example, if you upgrade the blueprint of an item to its legendary version and make 1000 of that item you'll receive 1000 legendary skill points, which can be used to unlock common, uncommon, rare, epic and legendary skills in the Mastery Tree.

The easiest items to make in the game are the starter wooden items (clubs and scoops), which use one oak and only need one step in the crafting process to make, unlike metal-based items that require at least two steps. Using carpenters with skills and traits in wood crafting can produce wooden items in a couple of seconds, enabling an exceptionally fast supply of items and skill points to be amassed.

There are now 54 skills to unlock across the quality tiers which are shown in the image below. Arrows show the upgrade paths. Skills can only be unlocked once all prior skills in the upgrade path have also been unlocked. For example, the skills Extra Cart, Blueprint Upgrades and 4th Hiring Option need to be unlocked before Store can be unlocked.
The Mastery Tree
The downside to unlocking skills
Each time you unlock a skill in the Mastery Tree you'll also inadvertently increase the number of items needed for every merchant offer. Plan how and when you'll unlock the Mastery Tree to avoid frustration.
  • Unlock Carpentry (1 skill) and each merchant offer will require 3 - 9 items.
  • Unlock Staff (2 skills) and each merchant offer will require 6 - 14 items.
  • Unlock Blueprint Upgrades (4 skills) and each merchant offer will require 13 - 24 items.
  • Unlock Store (11 skills) and each merchant offer will require 33 - 58 items.
  • Unlock Trade Routes (30 skills) and each merchant offer will require 90 - 160 items.
  • Unlock everything (45 skills) and each merchant offer will require 180 - 240 items.
Unlocking the following skills will also add new traits (positive and negative) to the hiring menu:
  • Store will add +/- 1% customers to the shop.
  • 2nd Floor will add +/- 50% walk speed up and down stairs.
Unlocking these skills will increase the pool of possible worker trait combinations. This can be a bad thing if you're looking for a particular worker trait or combination of traits early in a playthrough. Hiring new workers after acquiring these traits will likely cost you more time and money than anticipated as you will need to refresh the recruitment list several times more than if you hired the workers before acquiring these skills. Unless you are specifically looking for these traits, I recommend hiring as many workers as possible needed before unlocking them.
That's all!
