It's called "forfeit your way to victory." It souunds counter-intuitive, but your initial base laydown is the single most important factor. The best laydown is the one with the fewest directions open, and the least squares needed to consolidate into a single path.
Also, the easiest commander to use on hard (IMHO) is the old blue artillery dude. I can routinely beat frontier endless up to like level 60+ with him.
Some Commanders make their own appearance in the game too, like Sergeant Gurtag, who mans a turret on the HQ.
