How to Fix Bugged Thieves' Guild Quest
By Xafron Chi
On the Thieves guild quest Taking Care of Lex, you will eventually give a letter to The Stranger in Anvil. You're supposed to wait 24 hours and then get the letter back from him, but sometimes this quest bugs out and won't let you progress and he will just say "why are you bothering me?" when you talk to him.

You'll need a couple of mods to fix the quest with console commands without turning off achievements.

First mod
The first mod you will need is Oblivion Remastered Script Extender[www.nexusmods.com], or OBSE64.

Note that you may also need to download 7-Zip[www.7-zip.org] in order to properly open this mod.

Download the mod. Open it, and place its contents into the OblivionRemastered\Binaries\Win64 folder. Leave out the src folder though.
Second mod
If it doesn't already exist, create the following folder path in your Oblivion game's files:

OblivionRemastered\Binaries\Win64\OBSE\plugins

Next download Baka Achievement Enabler[www.nexusmods.com]. Once again, you will likely have to open this with 7-Zip.

Then put the BakaAchievementEnabler.dll and BakaAchievementEnabler.pdb files into that plugins folder you made.

Fix the quest
From your now modded Oblivion game folder, double click the obse64_loader.exe that you placed there earlier. This will launch the game.

Load your game and press the ~ key to open the console, and enter the following things:

Altar.Cheat.AllowSetStage true
setstage TG07Lex 40
Altar.Cheat.AllowSetStage false

Create a new save.

Go into your saved games and make sure there is not a broken achievement icon next to the new save (looks like a trophy cracked in half).

If there is no icon, it should mean it all worked fine.

Have a flame atronach. As a treat.

Launched it again after removing the src folder and everything seems to work. So either it was that or just needed a fresh attempt. Either way thank you!

I renamed the folder. I had imported the baka achievement stuff just forgot to include it in the step by step. I will try removing the src folder when I get home and see if that helps. Will update when I can. Thanks again.

You didn't mention what you did with the baka achievement enabler stuff. When you open that zip, the files you need are buried under a path of folders you have to click through. So if you just drag and dropped the initial file you saw, that may be creating issues.

You renamed the folder, or an actual file?

From the OBSE stuff, try removing the src folder. src is is for programmers.

Yeah sure nothing wrong with double checking. I downloaded both zips from nexus first. Extracted OBSE and put it's files under binaries/win64. Then created the plugins folder inside the OBSE folder I copied over. I did rename the folder to just OBSE instead of OBSE(version number) so maybe I fucked with some pointers in the code... Loaded the game up via the loader. Loaded my game, opened the console and input the commands by copy pasting in the order mentioned. Cleared the quest step message and did a quick save. Then went to load the quick save to see if the broken goblet was there and it was. I tried different variations like loading through steam instead, hard saving instead of quick save, deleting and reintroducing the actual save files, nothing worked so far. I honestly just chalked it up to a version change between publishing of this article and my playing date. There was an update to the game like a week ago I think. Thanks for the help regardless.

Uhhhh... maybe this sounds silly, but you can in your own words walk me through step by step what you did in detail?

I've tried this multiple times and sadly I keep getting the broken achievement icon. Any ideas? I made sure to follow the directions as closely as possible.

I've never tried modding on Steam Deck honestly. But if you google it people are doing it. There's a subreddit for Steam Deck, and there's posts about modding on it in there, so I would check that.
