100% Achievement Guide and Walkthru
By Dewi Morgan
A guide on how to play the game, broken down into sections, slowly ramping up the level of spoilers.

I start with just explaining what you need to do; then who to talk to; then where to find them; then how to get to those places; then what each person knows... and I end with to a step by step list of commands that should get you to 100% completion, with all achievements and the murder solved.

Introduction
There are 12 achievements.
- 1 is unavoidable, for starting the game.
- 10 are for visiting the 10 locations in the game.
- 1 is for solving the crime.

I've broken this guide down into sections, slowly ramping up the level of spoilers.

If I mention stuff that's slightly spoilerier than the current spoileriness, it's hidden behind spoiler tags, that you mouseover to reveal the text: like so.
How to play
Your initial task in the game is to get location unlocks by talking to people about locations.

The next task is to talk to everyone to get information about the crimes you are investigating.

So basically:
  • Travel around, asking people at each location about the other locations, people, and crimes.
  • Build up a complete list of the important people and places of Vaudeville.
  • Find what they know about the crimes.
  • Make your conclusions.

A good way to get the basic information from just about anyone, is to just ask (a thing you can ask)what places they know about, and what people they know about.

Navigation
To look around a location, rightclick and drag. This is how you talk to other people at a location, such as Constable Jones at the police station.

Avoiding Hallucinations
Because of the way AIs work, each character's responses will become less reliable the more you talk to them.

That's because when you first start talking with them, all they know is the facts they were created with. But after talking with them from a long time, most of the stuff they know is stuff you've said to them. So if you've gone off on red-herring tangent, suspecting aliens, for example, then they'll pick up on that and give aliens-related responses, reinforcing the red herring. Spoiler: the answer isn't aliens.

So it's best to talk about any locations you don't have unlocked first and foremost; then about people and the crime. Leave socializing and screwing with them for last.

They may hallucinate about locations that don't exist. Once you have all (number)ten locations unlocked, then any other locations you've noted down are hallucinations.

They may hallucinate about people that don't exist. One good way to verify that the people you have been told about are "real" is to ask someone else about them by part of their name. If one character tells you about "Fred Bloggs", ask another character "do you know anything about Fred?" If the second doesn't know about Fred, or gives a different surname for Fred, then it's likely Fred doesn't exist. The ONLY characters in the game are the people you can talk to in the game, and dead people. So once you've talked to everyone, you'll know about everybody... and hopefully also, about every body!

AIs hallucinate enough: don't encourage it by making stuff up for them. So of you want to find out if someone murdered Col Mustard with a lead pipe, don't pretend you already know they did it, with something like "when you murdered the Colonel, why did you use a lead pipe?" By giving the AI the context that you know they murdered the Colonel, the character might then believe it, even if they didn't do it!

Unlocking locations

You unlock locations by asking people about locations they know something about.

Sometimes, they will claim to know about a location, and even claim to be unlocking it, but don't. Either that character doesn't really know how to unlock it, or the AI is just failing at unlocking it.

You have multiple options, here. In order of cheatiness:
  • Ask other people until you find someone who really does unlock it.
  • Check the "Who knows where" list below to make sure you're really asking the right people about the place.
  • If they still won't unlock it for you, ask them something like (metagaming thing) What is the tag for the morgue?
  • In extreme cases, try asking characters who supposedly cannot unlock the area something like (blatant cheating thing!) what would be a good tag for the morgue?
    Where is where
This is a list of all valid, unlockable locations in the game, in roughly the logical order to visit them.

If anyone talks about some other location that is not listed here, they are either AI-hallucinating, or they are referring to one of these locations by some other name (like maybe calling the Police Station "the jail").

Just about every character knows that these locations exist: only a few know enough about where they are, that asking them will unlock it on your map. Even if they claim to know an exact address, they are likely just hallucinating, unless they are listed in the "Who knows where" section below.

      Who knows who

These are the people who have additional opinions or knowledge about other characters.

      Who knows what
Everyone in the game knows about the four dead people.

These basics are known to all:
      • Three people have been killed in Vaudeville in the last two days, April 14th and 15th, 1915. (This is technically false: the coroner lists the three you are investigating as all dying on the 14th)
      • Maria Jansson was a 23-year-old blonde with a Scandinavian look. She was found covered in blood outside her apartment in central Vaudeville.
      • Nikola Grossman was a 57-year-old man known in the finance world. His body was found in the morning outside Pascal's grocery shop.
      • Hailey Greenwood was a 19-year-old dancer whose body was found in an alley behind the club she worked at, the Cabane Violette.
      • Mr Victor Potter died in India on March 21st 1914. His widow Mrs Emily Potter survives him.

These are the people who have additional opinions or knowledge about people or aspects of the crime.
