Introduction
To access Evrima:
The Isle > Properties > Betas > Beta Participation > Evrima

Within this guide you will find a plethora of information about the basics of survival within The Isle Evrima! I hope this can be some help to new players and returning players alike and answer any questions you may have.

It might be a bit long, I've tried to condense it down as much as possible.

Throughout the majority of this guide I will be referencing herbivores and carnivores. Although omnivores exist, I typically class them in the herbivore category to keep things a bit simpler.

I also made a video answering some common questions I see around the community, majority of them are answered here but if you'd prefer to have a video format here you go:

Gameplay Basics
I am listing controls with default keybindings.

WASD is used to move your character.

Space to jump, if applicable to your playable.

Press TAB to open up your character profile, which you will likely be doing a lot as it has a lot of information.

Q is for scenting to find food, water or other resources within the map.

E is the interaction key typically used for eating and drinking.

G is used for grabbing bodies, meat chunks and plants or fruit to be carried.

H is to rest to regenerate stamina more efficiently.

Holding H is to sleep for a ‘safelog’*.

Z is to toggle to switch between walking and trotting. (Also used as airbrake for Pteranodon)

Shift is to sprint, this will consume stamina.

X is to activate night vision.

Hold N to court and Hold N in a suitable location to build a nest.

CTRL to crouch or dive underwater.

Attacks are bound to LMB and RMB by default.
Many creatures may have additional attacks or abilities if you hold ALT+LMB or ALT+RMB, these attacks typically consume stamina especially when used in succession. Some abilities may consume charges if applicable.

You must have manual alt attacks enabled in settings to manually have control over these abilities/attacks.

Settings > Gameplay > Manual Alt Attack

*Safelogging is an important feature, if you simply log out of the game, your character will remain for at least five minutes before disappearing. You can die during this time. It is recommended to sleep and wait out the timer before closing the game.
HUD Elements
In the corner of your screen, you will notice that you have a few icons.

The large three toed claw is your stamina bar, you will need to learn to manage your stamina especially during combat.

The stomach icon is your hunger, and the water droplet is your thirst, which grows with you as you age. This means that your stomach capacity will be larger and will need more food to sustain you as you get older.

Above your hunger bar is three smaller hexagons, these are your nutritional values.
This consists of carbs, proteins and lipids. You will be rewarded buffs for having a varied diet, but as long as you keep filling all one/two/three gradually, you will at least be able to achieve 100% growth rate.

The more % in each, the more growth rate you will have. The growth rate cap is 300% (each hexagon represents 100%), but this is difficult to achieve unless you know what you're doing. The faster you grow, the more food you need to consume, so it can be difficult to keep on top of.

∴ = Carbohydrates
S = Proteins
// = Lipids

Your nose is your best tool. If you hold Q to scent, you will open up your compass at the top of your screen. On the compass there are two key points, these indicate which way is North and which way is South. The compass will also show you any nearby food and water sources.

North

South
Survival - Nutrition and Gore
While you are exploring your surroundings, you may come across additional icons that appear on your compass. The closer you are to one of these zones, the more the side meters will fill.

Sanctuaries

Sanctuary Icon

Herbivores can go to Sanctuaries for all their diet needs as the red mushrooms will provide all three nutrient types as long as they are juveniles. Once you are too big for sanctuaries, the bees will eventually stop tolerating you and start attacking you. Carnivores can also benefit from sanctuaries if they can find an opportunity, but the trees are difficult to navigate and the bees act as a deterrent for larger carnivores.

Migration Zone

Migration Zone Icon

Migration Zones are a source of food for herbivores, if you follow them you can find food that matches your diet type. Carnivores can also see these Migration Zones and can choose to follow for a potential meal.

Patrol Zone

Patrol Zone Icon

Patrol Zones are mini migration zones for yourself and your group members. They are a good food source if you are far from a Migration Zone. You can find food here that matches your diet type.

Herbivores

For herbivores it's pretty straightforward to survive, you simply eat the plants or fruit that appear within Migration Zones, Patrol Zones, or Sanctuaries.

Sanctuary Mushroom

There is also a mechanic called Gastroliths, which you can usually find on more gravelly/stony surfaces. If you eat them, it will give you a status buff and start depleting your hunger a bit faster overtime. This does NOT deplete your nutrients. This means that you have the capabilities to continue gathering up nutritional values.

Both herbivores and carnivores can utilise gastroliths.

Carnivores

For carnivores there is a few more elements. Creature bodies (with the exception of AI) contain organs. These organs can be eaten to provide you different benefits.

Lungs: There are two of these in every body, and they always provide Three Dot nutrient.

Lungs

Heart: This organ is usually smaller than the stomach and can be quite hard to differentiate on smaller bodies, and it gives S nutrient.

Heart

Intestines: This organ is very easy to tell among the other ones and will give you Two Lines nutrient.

Intestines

Stomach: Stomachs will give you whatever the highest percentage nutrient was before the animal died, for example, if you were a full adult Ceratosaurus with 70% three dot nutrient, 50% S nutrient, and 40% two line nutrient, consuming the stomach of this now-dead Ceratosaurus will give you three dots as opposed to the other two nutrients, so you should prioritise consuming the other organs first.

Stomach

Pteranodons are a playable creature, but due to their size and anatomy, organs cannot currently be harvested from them.

IMPORTANT: It is CRUCIAL to understand that no matter if you are herbivore, carnivore or even omnivore, YOU CAN OVER-EAT. Over-eating will cause you to vomit majority of your stomach contents, as well as any nutritional values and your thirst. The game will give you a minor warning when you are getting close to over-eating; your stomach icon will start flashing. There are a few exceptions to this rule, Ceratosaurus and Deinosuchus cannot overeat.

Vomiting will cause a debuff called “Vomit Sickness” where your stamina, hunger and thirst bars will turn yellow and will be capped to a certain percentage and will heal overtime. If you start to refill your hunger before this debuff goes away, you will NOT receive any nutritional value from any sources of food. If you can find a salt deposit, eating from this will cure your sickness.

Salt Deposit Icon

Salt Deposits are great for healing sickness, but they deplete your nuritional values.
You can maintain some control over which ones are being depleted by selecting them in your character sheet when you hit TAB.

Nutritional Values Icon
Survival - Decay
As a carnivore, you need to pay attention to the food that you are eating.

Meat overtime will start to rot and decay, which will make most carnivores very sick.

On your compass scent view, you can tell if a carcass is rotting by the half eaten drumstick icon.

Rotting Meat Icon

Rotten food also has a visual indicator, where any meat chunks or organs on the ground will start to look discoloured and green.

If you eat rotten flesh, you will get a sickness debuff which will say that you may vomit as well as rapid dehydration.

The next stage of decay is that there will only be bones remaining, which is indicated on scent view by an icon of a bone. Bones and rotten flesh can be eaten without consequence by Ceratosaurus and Deinosuchus and bones will even provide these two playables with all three nutritional values, similarly to red mushrooms in sanctuaries.

Bones Icon
Survival - Non-Preferred Diets
Fresh meat which is not on your preferred foods list can still be valuable to you as a carnivore. These non-preferred meats are represented by a drumstick icon on your compass scent view.

Non-Preferred Meat Icon/Carcass

If the body has not already been harvested, you can repeatedly tap E to break open bodies to eat the nutritional organs inside, so no kill is a waste of time.

You may also find non-preferred meat chunks or organs which have been torn off from bodies, these can also be seen through your scent view compass.

Non-Preferred/Rotten Meat Chunk Icon

There are AI such as deer, goat, boar and other small AI animals, which can be killed and eaten and will give one type of nutritional value, but only if it’s listed in your preferred diet.
Server owners have a ton of freedom with server settings, so some servers may not have AI enabled.

For herbivores, any plant that is not on your preferred diets list will be represented by a leaf icon on your compass scent view. They are still edible to you, which is good if you are at the point of starving, but they will not provide you with any nutrients.

Non-Preferred Plant Icon

Herbivores also have the unique ability to graze on grass, which can help to stop you from starving to death when food becomes scarce.
Survival - Health
Health Indication

As you become familiar with combat, you can check your statistics on your dinosaur profile with hitting the TAB key.

You will notice that there is no way to check how much health you exactly have left. Instead, you will be able to track your status in two ways.

One, you can get an overall idea of where your health is at by looking at the heartrate monitor at the bottom of your dinosaur profile.

Heartrate Indicator

Green indicates that you are full health or close to full health,
yellow means that you have taken some damage,
orange means you are about halfway,
and red means that you are critically low health and should probably find a way to escape your situation.

Another way to get an idea of where your health is at, especially when you’re busy keeping an eye on your opponent, is to take a look at your screen.

As you take damage, your screen will become increasingly more bloody, depending on your health. If the blood is almost covering majority of the edges of your screen, you’re most likely in critical condition.

Bone Breaks

While exploring the map or even encountering a Pachycephalosaurus, you may come across the “X Fractured” debuff. This means that you have broken bones in some part of your body, which could potentially hinder your movement for a while. (X equals what part of your body is broken)

The fastest way to heal broken bones is to simply rest. Continuing to move with broken bones will cause it to heal slower.

Similarly, when in a fight with a Pachycephalosaurus, they may also break your leg, and even your head. If your head becomes fractured, your screen will go dark except a small area in the centre of your screen.

Unique Debuffs

As your health gets lower, you may receive the “Wounded” debuff, this debuff halves your overall damage output which will make it harder to stay on the offensive in fights, meaning you should start to play more defensively, or back off the fight entirely if possible.

You should also be careful of cannibalism when you are playing as a carnivore. Majority of the species cannot cannibalise naturally and you will suffer a unique debuff for eating your own kind.
This debuff is called “Muscle Spasms” and this means you will involuntarily bite at random intervals. This debuff will disappear overtime.

Another debuff you can get from both cannibalism and from having zero nutritional values, you can acquire the “Temporarily Infertile” debuff, which simply means that you are currently locked out of the nesting feature and will be unable to produce eggs.

Tracking

When you are hunting or see something bleeding, you can track their footprints or blood trails. You can also see if there are large gatherings of dinosaurs nearby by scenting a red icon on your compass.

Large Group Icon

To track blood or footprints, you need to go up to the blood or the footprint on the ground and tap Q when the game gives you the prompt to do so.

You will then be tracking that specific creature.
On your screen you then should be able to see footprints highlighted in blue, as well as a cone which will show you which direction those footprints are coming or going from.

You don’t need to hold scent to be able to see the tracks, you only need to tap Q to be able to see what you are tracking.

Tracking definitely takes a bit of practice however, as it can be easy to get lost or get confused on where your target ran off to.

If you are near players who are nesting, you may be able to smell their eggs.
Their eggs can be seen in your scent view on your compass, and is represented by an egg shaped icon.

You can also scent players who have recently vomited, as represented by a "steaming" pool icon on your compass.

Vomit Pool Icon

(As of writing this I don't currently have these icons for visual.)

Bleeding System

Bleeding has its own system. It is indicated by the red blood drop that shows up when you have taken any bleed-causing damage from another creature.

Bleeding Icon

Overtime, this blood drop will progressively deplete if you are constantly moving or being continuously attacked.

Once this blood drop starts to hit zero, your screen will start fading to black and eventually you will die from blood loss.

To heal bleeding, the best thing to do when that bar starts to worry you, is to run and find someplace to hide and rest with H. (There is also a mutation that allows you to avoid bleeding to death while resting.)

Although be careful, because your predators can track your movements if they press Q on your blood left on the ground or footprints, so sometimes its a good idea to change your hiding spot from time to time until your bleeding stops, which will be indicated with a white plus sign in the middle of the red drop.

Healing Bleed Icon

Overtime, your blood will start regenerating and will disappear when it’s done healing.
If you take any further damage while in this healing state, your wounds will reopen and the bleeding will continue.

If you are sprinting too much you will bleed out a bit faster.
It’s entirely possible to survive large blood loss, if you are lucky and escaped before your screen starts fading to black. Though without the mutation, it's not guaranteed to save you.

Wallowing

Sometimes while exploring the map, you may come across shallow pools of thick mud, which will slow you down when you walk through it and you will be unable to sprint while inside a mud pool.

These mud pools have a function with the bleeding system, where if you are bleeding, you can hold E on a mud pool to trigger a wallowing animation, which will clot your wounds and stop the bleeding.

Wallowing in mud will also help to stop you from being tracked for a period of time.
Mud will be washed off your skin if you swim in a body of water, or if it starts raining.
Survival - Environment and Navigation
The current map of The Isle Evrima is called ‘Gateway’ it is a very large map with various biomes and points of interest, such as human-made structures dotted across the map (many of which are still in development).

Exploring can be a good thing, as it will allow you to learn your surroundings and find things you may find interesting and locate landmarks, although it can be quite dangerous at times.

Other creatures are not your only threat, because the environment itself is a big killer. Sometimes, there are areas which may have very dense foliage hiding the edges of a cliff or mountain, so you should always explore with caution.

Avoid sprinting everywhere you go, to maintain your stamina in case you find yourself in a combat situation. Another reason is that you may end up falling to your death straight off the edge of a cliff, or (preferably) breaking your leg which will take some time to heal.

Map

The Isle has no in game map function as of yet, but there are resources and ways you can get around with or without one.

Any map can be tricky to navigate especially if you don't know what you are looking for. I cannot completely explain how to navigate this landscape, but I can give you pointers on how to make things easier for yourself in the long run.

While playing the game, try to find key landmarks you can use as a point of reference! It can also be a good idea to copy, paste and save your coordinates somewhere if you want to hold onto a specific location. (Steam has a notes function!)

Your coordinates are located in your character profile, on the top right hand side. You can also see which server you are currently connected to here. Clicking on the coordinates in your character profile will automatically copy them.

If you enabled streamer mode, you will not be able to see coordinates or server.

For those who are unsure, here is what coordinates signify:

Latitude: Measures North-South position. (How far North or South you are)

Longitude: Measures East-West position. (How far East or West you are)

Altitude: Measures height above sea level. (How high or low you are to sea level)

Learning the map can take some time, which is why there is a community made map online you can use to help you find your way around the island.

Copy and paste your coordinates into this website, and it will show you roughly where you are located!

Gateway Map
Survival - Mutations
Throughout the life of your dinosaur, you will be equipping yourself with buffs which can help you in your specific play style to make your life just a bit easier.

You can choose up to three mutations, one at the beginning when you spawn, another one halfway into your growth, then finally your third mutation once you hit full adult.

The game will let you know when you're able to pick a new mutation, as this icon will start flashing for a few seconds near your stamina bar.

Mutation Available Icon

You should focus on picking mutations which seem fun for you and how you enjoy to play the game.

Some mutations can only be picked at the second or third slot, and some mutations are even secret!

Secret mutations require you to do an action before they appear in the list. For example, if your dinosaur is not naturally cannibalistic, eating your kind and waiting for the debuff “Muscle Spasms” to disappear will unlock this mutation.

There are many different mutations to be discovered! You should always make sure to pick your mutation before your next mutation becomes available, otherwise you will be locked out of picking the previous slots.

If you're interested in finding the secret mutations, check the Tips and Tricks section of the guide.
Survival - Social and Behaviours
Calls

Survival is always greatly increased if you are part of a group. It is strength in numbers.

There are calls which display basic communication depending on your situation.

There are five calls in total, most bound to the numbers keys: 1,2,3,4 and F.

F call is the generic call that plays when you submit a text chat (which can be opened by hitting Enter).

Call 1, is the broadcast call which is a very loud call that can be heard from a significant distance away, it’s good for locating your friends and other people playing the same species, but be careful because it can also bring in a lot of predators and other unwanted attention looking for an easy kill.

Call 2 is your friendly call, it can be used to signify friendliness towards another player. If you hold 2 call, you can invite others nearby to a group.

Call 3 is your threaten call, you can use this if someone is getting too close or if you have intent on trying to scare someone away or display that you intend to attack. It can also be used to decline group requests.

Call 4 is your distress call, it is usually used when you see danger, or if you need help from any close by allies.

You can check your group members in your dinosaur profile by hitting TAB then clicking the group button, you can see who is the group leader and how many people are in your group. Every specie has a hard limit on how many people can be in a group.

If you or a group member wanders away too far from the rest of the pack/herd, their name will disappear from view, and will reappear once they come back within distance.

If the player out of range uses a broadcast call, you will be able to see their nametag for a couple seconds before disappearing again. As of right now this feature seems to be broken or inactive.

Nesting

Nesting is a great and fun thing to do once you are at least 75% grown.
When you first pick your dinosaur, you have to select whether you are male or female, which comes into play when nesting becomes an option for you.

Before you can even think about making a nest, you will need to find a dinosaur of the same species of the opposite gender.

Then, once both players agree, you will need to face each other and hold N to initiate courting. Once the courting animation plays, check your dinosaur profile and it should tell you on your status whether or not you are paired with that player.

Paired players can then build a nest by tapping B and you will see a nest icon on your screen, both parents will be able to see this.
Depending on what you are playing, nest building might be different. Some dinosaurs will only make mound nests from dirt, which can be made by holding E to build the nest.
Other nests may require you to gather sticks which you can Q to scent to find nearby and then use those sticks to build the nest.
Once your nest is built, the female should be able to hold E on the nest and lay her eggs.

Every creature has a maximum amount of eggs they can lay, and if one or both of you has a sub-par diet, some of those eggs may be already rotten and will have to be removed, if so, you will get a prompt to hold E to manage the nest.

Afterwards, you should be able to tap Q to scent and it will also track the temperature of those eggs so you know when to sit on them if they are cold, and when to get off if they are getting too hot.

Eggs will go bad if their temperature requirements are not met. Managing the nest will also help to maintain temperature, if your nest is getting too hot, you can hold E to manage the nest which will cool the nest down.

By pressing tab, you have a nest button which will take you to the nest interface. This interface is what will allow you to invite other players, and choose whether or not to make these eggs public or private. You will need to check this interface if you want to be able to accept or decline egg invites from other players.

Hatchlings

Once your eggs have hatched, you now have babies to take care of! These babies will occasionally start begging the parents for food, which you can do by holding E as a hatchling.

As a parent, you can feed a begging hatchling by holding E until you see that your hunger, thirst and nutrients deplete slightly, it is a good idea to hold it for longer because although the animation plays, the game does not register the feeding immediately.

Any nutrients you have will also be fed to the hatchlings, so if you have perfect diet, expect to be the parent your hatchlings will always beg for.

These babies cannot beg forever though, they will eventually grow old enough that the option to beg for food no longer appears, so at that point, it is your duty as a parent, to start hunting or scavenging prey. But you also don’t need to, you can also leave them up to their fate if you want.

It is also interesting to note that your hatchlings will inherit some of the parents mutations, and still be able to pick three mutations as they progress in growth. So being nested in means you can have up to six mutations rather than three.
Survival - Death
Death is something you should learn to accept. You will die. A lot.

Although it is hard to lose your dinosaur at any stage of growth, death is a way to learn from your mistakes to practice getting better at the game.

You might learn a new tactic, and realise what you did wrong in order to die in the way that you did. Of course, sometimes the game itself is trying to grief you with its lag spikes, terrible optimisation, and countless bugs.

Death is part of the game and always will be, so it's not worth to be rude or toxic about it. If death irritates you, maybe consider not playing the game, as it is unavoidable.

You need to have a lot of patience when playing The Isle, as this game does not hold your hand and expects you to learn through experience.

Community

There are some community servers (also known as Unofficial servers) that have realism or semi-realism rules to protect players from excessive hunting.

These community servers usually have Discord servers you can join to read the rules, and usually include information about what to do when you find players breaking these rules. The same applies if you have evidence of people cheating or hacking. (this counts for official servers as well).

There is a replay system which will record your session as you are playing. You can hit the F2 key to start recording if you have it turned on in your settings menu. (Note: the replay tool does NOT work for official servers so you will have to use a third party recording program if you want to be able to catch cheaters in the act.)
Tips and Tricks
A lot of this section is going to be censored because I don't want to ruin the exploration and fun of figuring things out on your own. But if you're looking to do something specific and need some help then you can find this here.

Please proceed with caution, especially if you'd rather experiment for yourself.

Special Abilities

Gallimimus and Beipiaosaurus have a unique ability each.

Gallimimus can forage for food by interacting with foraging points found through the scent view on the compass.

Gallimimus Forage Icon

Beipiaosaurus has a similar ability but can forage underwater. Holding CTRL will latch you onto the river/lake bed and using Q to scent, you can find bubbles you can interact with to find food.

Beipiaosaurus Forage Icon

Hidden Mutations

Apologies for the weird formatting on this section, as I wanted to make it a bit harder to accidentally hover over the spoilers.

Cannibalism (Carnivore)

This one is not spoilered as it is pretty easy to accidentally get. For carnivores that are not naturally cannibals, you can unlock this hidden mutation by eating your own kind. You will suffer muscle spasms which will heal overtime. It unlocks for slot 2 and 3.

Saltwater Mutation (Carnivore and Herbivore)

Reniculate Kidneys is a hidden mutation you can unlock.
To get this mutation, you must drink saltwater until the status effect
'Fluid Deficiency' disappears from your status report.
It unlocks the mutation for either your 1st, 2nd or 3rd mutation slot.

Increased Night Vision (Carnivore)

Augmented Tapetum is a hidden mutation
that gives you increased night vision. To get this one,
you need to kill 4-12 players during the night.
It unlocks on slot 2 and 3.

Slower Nutrition Decay (Carnivore and Herbivore)

Enhanced Digestion is a hidden mutation
you can unlock by maintaining a good diet 60%+
of the time throughout your growth.
It unlocks on slot 2 and 3.

Overeating Capacity (Carnivore and Herbivore)

Heightened Ghrelin is a hidden mutation
that increases the amount of food it takes before you vomit.
You can unlock this mutation by having
a flashing stomach icon for roughly 9~ minutes.
Only unlocks for slot 2.

Reduced Stamina Threshold (Carnivore and Herbivore)

Multichambered Lungs is a hidden mutation
you can get by draining 6-8 full bars of stamina
by sprinting or swimming. Unlocks for slot 2 and 3.

Bone Consumption (Carnivore)

Osteophagic is a hidden mutation
which allows you to consume bones
and gain nutrients from them
even if you aren't naturally able to eat them.
You can unlock this by eating bones.
Can be unlocked on 1st, 2nd or 3rd slot.

Hatchling Health (Female Only, Carnivore and Herbivore)

Prolific Reproduction is a hidden mutation
specific to females only.
This mutation gives additional health and stamina
to hatchlings you produce.
They also require less food and grow faster.
Unfortunately this one seems a bit trickier to get,
as the theory to get this one is that you need to nest,
incubate, hatch and raise 5 individuals to juvenile.

Jump More (Herbivore and Carnivore)

Reinforced Tendons is a hidden mutation
that reduces the stamina cost for jumping.
You need to jump 50 times
and can be unlocked on 1st, 2nd and 3rd slot.

@bengt25 To get Saltwater Mutation, you must drink saltwater until you get 'Fluid Deficiency' on your character status. Afterwards, you need to keep drinking saltwater, fill back up on freshwater, and repeat until this 'Fluid Deficiency' disappears. On a free mutation slot, you can scroll the list until you find 'Reniculate Kidneys' which will allow you to drink saltwater! Hope this helps. :)

Hey! @Undertaker. No problem! So, Evrima is the name of the public branch for The Isle, which is the current updated version of the game. Make sure that you right click The Isle in your library > Properties > Betas > Beta Participation > Evrima. To find servers, you can play on officials (which is the default servers you will see) or you can use the drop down list on the right hand side to find unofficial servers created by the community. From there, you can pick a server you like the sound of and play! Some of them have rules, some of them don't. I recommend picking a server that has an active playercount, which is shown in the server details! <3

You’re welcome! I’m sorry that is your experience, unfortunately this game is very much a “don’t trust anyone” game ): but, there are definitely some who are friendly. <3
