Introduction to Fishing
Good day, my name is Pyvru, and in this guide, I will teach you how to fish, complete the Angler quest, and complete the fishing achievements.

Fishing in Terraria is an essential activity as it helps the player acquire several resources such as potions, ores, materials, quest items, and even some rare fishing equipment. The players can catch a variety of fishes by simply casting a fishing rod in a water, honey, or even lava bodies across different biomes.

Getting started
To get started first you need to craft a fishing pole and buy a bug net from the Mechant NPC . The bug net is used to catch bait in the overworld, which is essential for fishing. The most common baits you can collect at the beginning of the game include worms, fireflies, grasshoppers, and snails. Once you progress to Pre-hardmode or hardmode, you'll have access to Master Bait .

The Angler NPC can be found on the Ocean biome either at the sand or at the ocean floating. Clicking on him makes him a moveable NPC when housing space is available. He prefers to be moving in a house in the Ocean biome along with the Captain and the Stylist. You can still do fishing without talking to the Angler but you'll miss out on most of the important rewards and materials needed for Hardmode equipment and materials. You can start the daily fishing quest by talking to him. The daily quest resets every 4:30 AM regardless if you talk to him.

Completing a quest gives various rewards ranging from equipables, vanity, rare materials, and especially fishing baits.
Complete your first Angler Quest
Steps on how to fish and Complete your first Angler Quest
  1. Find a Fishing Spot – Ensure the water body has at least 75 tiles.(300+ tiles is recommended)
  2. Equip the Fishing Pole and Bait – Select them in the hotbar.
  3. Cast the Fishing Line – Click on the water to throw the bobber.
  4. Wait for a Bite – Watch for the bobber to move or splash.
  5. Reel in the Catch – Click again when the bobber dips to collect the fish or item.
  6. Repeat as Needed – Continue fishing to gather resources or complete quests.
Good fishing spots include:
  • Lakes in the Forest biome (common starting areas)
  • Underground and Cavern pools
  • Oasis in the Desert biome
  • Ocean biome for catching special fish and crates
  • Lava pools in the Underworld (requires special equipment for lava fishing)
Factors that affect fishing
Fishing is dependent on success due to a variety of factors. This section will assist you in increasing their efficiency for optimizing fishing and the chances of catching rare fish and crates.

1. Fishing Power
Fishing Power determines the likelihood of catching fish, crates, and rare items. It is affected by:
  • The fishing pole used (higher power means better catches).
  • The bait power (better bait increases Fishing Power).
  • Active buffs such as Fishing Potions (+15% Fishing Power) and Crate Potions.

2. Weather Conditions
Fishing is influenced by weather:
  • Rainy weather increases Fishing Power and allows certain fish to spawn.
  • Stormy weather can also affect bite rates and fish availability.

3. Time of Day:
Angler quest reset every 4:30 AM regardless if you complete or not his previous request.

4. Moon Phases:
Certain Moon phases increase and decrease the fishing power. It also affect enemy spawnrate and NPC shop.

Here's a quick table of the moon phases:
Full Moon
+10% fishing power
Waning Gibbous
+5% fishing power
Third Quarter
no effect
Waning Crescent
-5% fishing power
New Moon
-10% fishing power
Waxing Crescent
-5% fishing power
First Quarter
no effect
Waxing Gibbous
+5% fishing power

5. Biome Type

Different fish spawn in different biomes, such as:
  • Forest
  • Ocean
  • Corruption/Crimson
  • Snow
  • Underground/Cavern
  • Hallowed
  • Jungle
  • Lava Pools

6. Water Size
  • 75 connected tiles of water are required to fish.
  • 300+ tiles improve bite rates and quality of catches.
  • Requires using special accessories to fish in lava like Hotline Fishing Rod or catch bait in Underworld.

7. LUCK
Luck also plays an important role in fishing, is a hidden factor on the player but it influences on what kind of reward will be reeled in.

Here's a quick luck description from the Terraria WIki:
  • If the player has bad (negative) Luck, there is a chance (determined once every catch attempt) that their Fishing Power will be reduced. Similarly, good (positive) Luck gives a chance of increasing their Fishing Power.
  • If a player has total Luck less than zero, then there is a (−100 × Luck)% chance per catch attempt that the player's Fishing Power will be reduced by −10% to −40%.
  • If a player has total Luck greater than zero, then there is a (100 × Luck)% chance per catch attempt that the player's Fishing Power will be increased by +10% to +40%.
  • Actual fishing rewards are not influenced by Luck beyond fishing power.
  • The chance of catching Crates is not affected by Luck, although which kind of crate is caught is affected. This is because crates have a flat percentage chance of being caught, which is not affected by Fishing Power or Luck, but if a crate is caught, the kind of crate is determined by Fishing Power. See the Crate Mechanics section below for further details.

Fishing on Lava
Fishing in lava requires special types of equipment and preparation. Unlike normal fishing, you cannot use standard fishing rods and bait in lava without specific items.

These are the accessories required to fish on lava:
Item Name
Effect
Lavaproof Tackle Bag
Combines tge Angler Earring and the Angler Tackle Bag, granting a total boost of 30% if all three are equipped. Fishing line will never break, decreases chance of bait consumption, increases fishing power by 10 and Allows fishing in lava

Note:
  • For the remaining open accessory slot, you can equip wings or boots to increase your chances of survival.
Fishing during Blood Moon
Fishing during a Blood Moon in Terraria is a special and dangerous experience that offers other loot possibilities but comes with a lot more risks. The Blood Moon is a randomly occurring event at night when certain conditions are met, making it possible for more enemies to spawn, including hostile creatures that can attack you while you are fishing.

These are the loots and enemies you can fish up during Blood Moon:
  • Dread of the Red Sea - A Dreadnautilus, two Blood Squids, and a Blood Moon painting.
  • Advanced Combat Techniques - Permanently increases the defense of Town NPCs by 6 and attack damage by 20%
  • Surly Slime - Can be fished up during a Blood Moon.
  • Wandering Eye Fish - Pre-hardmode enemy
  • Zombie Merman - Pre-Hardmode enemy

Now these are Hardmode Enemies you can encounter while fishing:
  • Hemogoblin Shark - Hardmode enemy
  • Blood Eel - A flying Hardmode enemy
  • Dreadnautilus - Hardmode enemy, Killing it for the first time reward's "Don't Dread on Me" achievement.
  • Blood Squid - A flying Blood Moon enemy summoned by the Dreadnautilus.
Best Fishing Equipment and Accessories
In this section is the accessory for fishing, some obtainable after doing angler quest.

First is the angler armor set received by doing Angler daily quest.
Item Name
Effect
Angler Hat
+5 fishing power
Angler Vest
+5 fishing power
Angler Pants
+5 fishing power

Then the accessories and equipment received from the angler quest will be useful to craft this endgame items:
Item Name
Effect
Golden Fishing Rod
No debate, the current BEST fishing pole in-game as it have 50% fishing power. Allows fishing and increases catch frequency in any biome.
/ Any Baits
Baits are required to fish. The higher the bait power than better reward will be reeled in.
Lavaproof Bug Net or Golden Bug Net
Allows catching critter and bait required to fish.
Lavaproof Tackle Bag
Combines tge Angler Earring and the Angler Tackle Bag, granting a total boost of 30% if all three are equipped. Fishing line will never break, decreases chance of bait consumption, increases fishing power by 10 and Allows fishing in lava
Glowing Fishing Bobber
+10 fishing power
Lava Moss Fishing Bobber
+10 fishing power
Angler Earring
+10 fishing power
Any boots and wings
Can increase chances of survival.

On my classic world gameplay, I normally use Lavaproof Tackle Bag, Angler Earring, and Lava Moss Fishing Bobber for fishing on any biome including lava. It does the job and stacks the effect of each item. Then your current wings and boots will suffice to dodge enemies and their projectiles.

Truffle Worm and Duke Fishron
The Truffle Worm is a rare critter that spawns in the underground Glowing Mushroom biome during Hardmode, It's main purpose is to summon the Duke Fishron boss in the ocean biome. Your Lifeform Analyzer, PDA or Cell Phone will show Truffle worm as a rare creature.

If the truffle worm bait is used on the ocean, it will summon the Duke Fishron and first time defeating it will reward the player with "Fish Out of Water" achievement and Duke Fishron rewards.

MAXIMIZE YOUR FISHING POWER!
Fishing Power determines the success rate, catch quality, and speed of fishing in Terraria. To maximize it, consider the following factors:

1. Use the Best Fishing Poles
  • Golden Fishing Rod (50%) – The best standard fishing rod, obtained after 50 Angler quests.
  • Sitting Duck’s Fishing Pole (40%) – Purchased from the Traveling Merchant.
  • Hotline Fishing Hook (45%) – A rare Angler quest reward that allows lava fishing.

2. Use High-Power Bait
Bait power contributes significantly to Fishing Power. Some of the best options include:
  • Master Bait (50%) – Currently the best bait ingame, Found in crates and Angler quest rewards.
  • Journeyman Bait (30%) – A high-quality default bait from Angler quests and crate rewards.
  • Enchanted Nightcrawler (35%) – Crafted from crafting fallen stars and worms.
  • Hell Butterfly, Lavafly, Magma Snail (Used for lava fishing) – Caught in the Underworld using a Lavaproof Bug Net or Golden Bug Net.

3. Increase Fishing Buffs and Equipment
  • Fishing Potion (+15 Fishing Power) – Increases overall efficiency of the fishing rod and bait.
  • Crate Potion – Increases the chance of finding valuable crates depending on the biome fishing.
  • Sonar Potion – Allows players to see what they are about to catch before reeling in.
  • Lavaproof Angler Bag / Angler Tackle Bag – Combines the Tackle Box, High-Test Fishing Line, and other accessories to improve efficiency.
  • Chum Bucket - it also increases your fishing power based on how many chum are visible in the water

Sitting in a toilet, using Chum Bucket and drinking Ale also increases your fishing power, here is full stat before the sitting and drinking:

And here's after sitting, drinking potions, chum bucket and ale:

You can experiment on different items to maximize your fishing power than mine, but to me this is enough to finish Angler daily quest quickly.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Servant-in-Training : Complete your first Angler quest. Find the Angler NPC (usually sleeping on the Ocean surface) and complete a fishing quest by bringing him the requested fish.
Good Little Slave: Complete 10 Angler quests. How to Get: Keep completing the daily fishing quests.
Trout Monkey: Complete 25 Angler quests. Continue doing fishing quests every day (or by using Enchanted Sundial to speed up time).
Glorious Golden Pole: Obtained after 30th fishing quest. Keep going kid.
Fast and Fishious:Complete 50 Angler quests. Persist in doing daily fishing quests. You're doing great.
Supreme Helper Minion!: Complete 200 Angler quests. The most time-consuming fishing achievement. You finally did it, I hope this doesn't make you quit fishing.
Feast of Midas: This is still fishing related as it requires reeling most requierd materials for Golden Delight. Also one of the hardest achievement to the materials needed for crafting have 1/400 (0.25%) chance of spawning.
Don't Dread on Me: Fishing during Blood Moon and killing the Dreadnautilus the first time completes this quest.
The Great Slime Mitosis: Surly Slime can be fished up during the Blood moon and required for this achievement.
Fish Out of Water: Using Truffle Worm (catchable on Underground Mushroom Biome) summon Duke Fishron and defeating it the first time rewards you this achievement.
Tips and Tricks
In this section is the general knowledge that everyone should know about fishing.

General tips
  • Use Fishing Potions – Sonar, Crate, and Fishing Potions greatly improve fishing efficiency.
  • Build an Enclosed Fishing Spot – Protect yourself from enemies, especially during Blood Moons.
  • Fish in Larger Lakes – A lake must be at least 300 tiles for optimal fishing.
  • Use the Fiberglass Fishing Pole or better – The higher the pole’s fishing power, the better the loot chances.
  • Check Weather and Time – Fishing is best in clear weather and during mornings (4:30 AM - 6:00 AM) or evenings (6:00 PM – 7:30 PM).
  • Use the Chum Bucket – Improves fish bite rate when thrown into water (obtained during Blood Moon fishing).
  • Fish in the Ocean for Reaver Shark – This pre-Hardmode pickaxe is as strong enough to obtain Molten Pickaxe.
  • Sky Lakes Offer Unique Catches – Obtain the Sky Crate and exclusive sky-themed items.
  • Fishing in Lava Requires Special Gear – Use a Lava Fishing Rod, Lava Bait, or a Lava Hook Accessory.

Advanced Fishing Tricks
  • Use Crate Potions Before Hardmode – Stockpiling crates to get Hardmode ores immediately after defeating the Wall of Flesh.
  • Use Sonar Potions to Avoid Junk Catches – Saves bait by letting you choose which fish to reel in.
  • Fish During Rain for Rare Catches – Raining also increases your Fishing Power by +20%.
  • Journeyman Bait is the best balance of effectiveness and availability.
  • Lava Fishing is the only way to get Obsidian and Hellstone Crates
  • Duke Fishron can be summoned through fishing using a Truffle Worm in the Ocean
  • A Water Candle & Battle Potion increase enemy spawn rates but do not affect fishing chances.
  • All crates contain a guaranteed amount of coins, making them useful for farming money.
  • When fishing without the High Test Fishing Line, Lavaproof Tackle Bag, or Angler Tackle Bag, there is always a 1/7 (14.29%) chance that the fishing line will break on reel-in, forfeiting the caught item. Chances of consuming bait remain the same even if the line breaks. With one of the three accessories equipped, the line never breaks.
Conclusion
CONCLUSION:
Fishing offers many benefits as far an activity that gives materials, equipment, and gear as loot rewards the user. If you know how fishing works, has the correct equipment, and the right conditions, they can significantly progress your resources with almost no effort throughout the game. The increase in efficiency applies regardless if they are fishing in water or lava, using buffs, accessories, or even good bait. Once you perfect your fishing skills, you can easily craft enough resources at hand.
