How To Enable Frame Generation [Exclusive Guide + Bonus]
By Qunisth
Hey giga chads, dovahkins *flex. Todd told me over phone that he's tired of breaking your mods with useless new patches and asked me to make a guide on how to add frame generation to his game Skyrim.

I was surprised and asked: "Todd, why don’t you do it yourself?".
To which Todd replied, and I quote: "Who's laughing now?"...

Anyway, this guide is for those of you with at least a GTX 900, GTX 1000, or RTX 2000 and higher.

Buy Lossless Scaling on Steam
https://store.steampowered.com/app/993090/Lossless_Scaling/
(or find yourself if not availible in your country lol)

Download Lossless Scaling and make sure to choose the latest beta version:

Invidia Control Panel Settings
  • Navigate to "Manage 3D Settings > Global Settings" tab and adjust the following option:

Vertical Sync: Off *V-Sync should be turned off in the game settings as well

  • Navigate to "Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Add LosslessScaling.exe from the main folder" tab and adjust the following options:

Vertical Sync: On *for stable frametime
Vulkan/OpenGL present method: Prefer layered on DXGI Swapchain

Low Latency Mode: Ultra *for lower latency
Lossless Scaling Settings
  • Open Lossless Scaling main folder.
    Locate config.ini file, open it for editing, and change default value of frametime_buffer_size from 15 to 1 . Save file.
    *This will reduce input lag between the game and mouse/keyboard.
    frametime_buffer_size = 1

Lossless Scaling Profile Settings
  • Scaling Type:
The best upscalers for enhancing image clarity are LS1 (which is the best) and BSAC (which is slightly worse). LS1 consumes a couple of FPS more than BSAC.
*If you don't need additional sharpness, set the Scaling Type to Off (this may impact FPS and VRAM usage in the game).
  • Frame Generation Mode:
Choose how much you want to boost your FPS. The game has a 60 FPS lock. The higher the multiplier, the more graphical artifacts may appear. The higher your native FPS, the fewer artifacts you'll experience.
*60x2x100% looks almost perfect in Full HD.
  • Resolution Scale:
This setting determines the resolution at which frame generator will generate new frames.
For monitors up to Full HD (1080p) - 100%
For monitors up to 2K (1440p) - 75%
For monitors up to 4K (2160p) - 50%
*If you experience significant performance drops after enabling frame generation, you can lower this setting at your discretion.
*Frame Generation also consumes some of your PC's resources, which can reduce FPS. Keep this in mind when choosing the desired FPS and Resolution scale.
Skyrim Settings
Open the SkyrimPrefs.ini file (at C:\Users\user\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\ or within Mod Organizer) and modify the following three parameters:

bBorderless=1 *frame generation works in windowed mode only
bFullScreen=0
iVSyncPresentInterval=0 *to reduce latency

And disable crosshair in game settings to avoid graphical artifacts.
How to Enable Frame Generation
  • Open the game and press keyboard shortcut:

    CTRL + ALT + S

  • If you have a 240Hz or higher monitor and a powerful PC, you can disable 60 FPS lock and limit your fps.
  • Limit your FPS to the point where it remains stable when using frame generation.
  • With a native 120 FPS, you can achieve 360 FG FPS in x3 mode, which should be smoother and sharper without graphical artifacts.

  • Set the FramerateLimit to "half" or "one third" of refresh rate of your monitor (e.g., mine is 144 Hz, so I set it to 72 or 48 FPS).
    *If you have an odd refresh rate monitor like 165 Hz. Subtract 1 to get 164, then divide by 2 or 3, resulting in an 82 or 54 FPS lock. (Avoid odd numbers in native and interpolated frames, and do not exceed your monitor's refresh rate)

  • Framerate examples for your monitor:
    • 60Hz - 30x2 or 20x3
    • 75Hz - 36x2 or 24x3
    • 90Hz - 44x2 or 30x3
    • 120Hz - 60x2 or 40x3
    • 144Hz - 72x2 or 48x3
    • 165Hz - 82x2 or 54x3
    • 240Hz - 120x2 or 80x3 or 60x4
    • 360Hz - 180x2 or 120x3 or 90x4 or 72x5 or 60x6
      *New generated frames is pointless above your monitor's refresh rate.

  • Set the following settings in SSEDisplayTweaks.ini:

    Fullscreen = false
    Borderless = true
    Resolution = 1920x1080 or 2560x1440 or 3840x2160
    EnableVSync = false
    FramerateLimit = set the value from the previous step
    Ensure that there is no # before these parameters.

This frame generation mod does not work without SSE Display Tweaks mod. See the previous step for installation instructions.

Installation Steps:

  • DLSSG To FSR3 0.110 Mod Installing:
    *You can skip this step if you have RTX 4000 series or higher.

    • Download DLSS to FSR3 0.110 January 2025 folder.
    • Open DisableNvidiaSignatureChecks.reg and confirm by pressing Yes.
    • Then, move nvngx.dll and dlssg_to_fsr3_amd_is_better.dll and dlssg_to_fsr3.ini to main Skyrim folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\)

  • Frame Generation Mod Installing:
    Install SkyrimUpscalerFGBuildAlpha03.zip like any other mod using Mod Organizer 2 (recommended) or manually extract SKSE and UpscalerBasePlugin into the Data folder.

  • Update DLSS 3.1 to DLSS 4.0:
    • In Mod Organizer 2, Right-click on SkyrimUpscalerFGBuildAlpha03 - Open in Explorer.
    • Open UpscalerBasePlugin folder.
    • Replace nvngx_dlss.dll with the updated version from Google Drive.

  • Configure the DLSS settings:
    Open SkyrimUpscaler.ini (located at - SkyrimUpscalerFGBuildAlpha03\SKSE\Plugins\).
    Apply the following settings:

    mUpscaleType = 0
    mUseOptimalMipLodBias = true
    mRenderReShadeBeforeUpscaling = true
    mQualityLevel = 0
    mSharpening = true
    mSharpness = 0.800000 # For 1080p
    mSharpness = 1.000000 # For 1440p
    mDLSSPreset = 3
    mDLSSGEnabled = true

Additional Notes:
For AMD GPUs: Change mUpscaleType from 0 to 1.
To enhance image quality, adjust the mQualityLevel setting as instructed in the .ini file. Performance mode is recommended for 1440p monitors.
To decrease or increase sharpness, adjust mSharpness in the .ini file or press END in the game.

  • Activating DLSS 4.0 in Nvidia Inspector:
    • Open the nvidiaProfileInspector folder and ensure that CustomSettingNames.xml is located in the same folder as nvidiaProfileInspector.exe.

    • Launch Nvidia Profile Inspector and scroll down to section 5 in the long list of settings.

    • Locate the "DLSS 3.1.1+ FORCE DLSS 3.1 PRESET LETTER" setting.
      Select Preset K from the dropdown menu.
      Click Apply Changes in the top-right corner.
      Ensure that you're on the "GLOBAL_DRIVER_PROFILE" tab in the top-left corner (this should be the default when the app opens).

    • Once completed, every game will now use the Preset K for all quality levels, provided you’ve replaced the DLLs in the game folder.

    • To revert to the default settings, scroll back to where Preset K was selected.
      Hit the grey button at the far right edge of the screen, next to the code, and then click Apply again.

  • Disabling TAA and FXAA in skyrimprefs.ini:
    bFXAAEnabled=0
    bUseTAA=0

  • Invidia Control Panel Settings:
    Navigate to "Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings > Add SkyrimSE.exe from the main folder" tab and adjust the following options:

    • Vertical Sync: On *for stable frametime
FG Mod + LSFG + Stutters Fix [BONUS]
We need to install ENB to limit the game's FPS and stabilize frametime, as SSE Display Tweaks cannot provide an FPS limit with smooth frametime and will result in more stuttering compared to the ENB FPS limiter. I never install ENB, as I've already installed it in my Skyrim modded build. I'm too lazy do it myself.

To explain: We have both Native FG Mod and LSFG, which allow us to increase FPS by up to 4 times from the native FPS, with some artifacts, at the cost of some added input latency for the mouse and keyboard.

  • Set the following settings in SSEDisplayTweaks.ini:
    FramerateLimit = Set the value higher than the ENB FPS limiter to disable the SSE Display Tweaker limiter. This will allow the ENB FPS Limit to work. I set it to 300.

  • Skyrim must have Low Latency Mode: Ultra enabled and V-Sync enabled in Nvidia Control Panel (and disabled VSync in SSEDisplayTweaks.ini), following the previous steps.
    Lossless Scaling must also have V-Sync enabled in the Nvidia Control Panel, following the previous steps.

  • In the game, press Alt + Enter, go to the LIMITER section, and enable EnableFPSLimit (Green checkmark). Then, set FPSLimit to 36 (for my 144Hz monitor).

    FPS Examples:
    • 36 for 144Hz monitors (LSFG 2x Mode)
    • 40 for 165Hz monitors (LSFG 2x Mode)
    • 60 for 240Hz monitors (LSFG 2x Mode) OR 40 for (LSFG 3x Mode)
    • 90 for 360Hz monitors (LSFG 2x Mode) OR 60 for (LSFG 3x Mode) OR 44 for (LSFG 4x Mode)

  • This will make the game run at Native 36 FPS with ENB smooth frametime limiter, which is then scaled to 72 FPS by FG Mod, and further scaled to 144 FPS by LSFG by pressing CTRL + ALT + S.

Tips for using Lossless Scaling and FG Mod together:
After some time, your game may start to lag, with heavy mouse inputand slow performance. In this case, try quicksaving and then quickloading - this usually works for me. I believe this issue is caused by a memory leak, particularly on video cards with low VRAM, as well as the way these two programs interact.

Tips for using Lossless Scaling:
If your game window freezes after a while, disable LSFG by pressing CTRL + ALT + S. This may not always resolve the issue, so if it doesn’t help, you will need to close both Skyrim and Lossless Scaling via Task Manager.

Conclusion
I play Skyrim with a locked 60 FPS, which I interpolate to 120 FPS using frame generation. This allows me to bypass the engine's limitations, where more powerful hardware cannot fully unleash its potential due to the game's closed code and modding restrictions. I don't notice graphical artifacts. They are present but barely noticeable 95% of the time.

The image clarity has also improved thanks to the neural upscaling with DLSS, which includes a sharpness parameter that doesn't affect FPS and can be adjusted to your preference.

DLSS 4.0 looks amazing and provides a significant increase in image clarity in Performance mode compared to DLSS 3.0 Quality mode.

FG Mod with LSFG is the only way to achieve solid 144, 240, or 360 FPS in modded major cities in Skyrim. However, there will still be frame stutters due to the Skyrim engine being very outdated, it's really quite old.
