Liftoff - Tutorial for BEGINNERS
By thequeash
Many people get discouraged from flying a drone in the Liftoff simulator after an hour of play. They can't master the drone, it's too fast, and the controls are too sensitive to even the slightest movement. I started playing this game without any experience in flying a real drone (and especially FPV). After 20 hours of play, my skills allow me to finish a race on every possible track available in the game. I would like to share a few things that you should do to make learning easier.

Liftoff - how to start?
Choosing a controller
The best choice is a dedicated FPV drone controller. Unfortunately, its prices usually start at $70. Such an investment makes no sense at the beginning. What will you do with the controller if flying a drone doesn't become your hobby?

At first, you won't be able to fly any equipment, and a professional controller will make it easier for you to fly only at an advanced level. First of all, you need to learn how to control the drone, and you can easily do it on a regular gamepad, such as the Microsoft Xbox One Controller or the Sony DualSense PS5 Controller.

If flying a drone becomes your passion, then you can consider choosing dedicated equipment.
Choosing a drone in the game
There are dozens of different drones available in the game. They differ in various characteristics. The best drone for a beginner is one that is not too fast and its controls are not too sensitive.

To choose a drone, select from the main menu: TOOLS > WORKBENCH > DRONE EDITOR. Find the "Borrum 180X (Tutorial)" drone there. In my opinion, this is the best drone to start with.

Which map is best for learning?
Contrary to appearances, the tutorial available in the game is difficult and it is not easy to complete it as a beginner. It is better to choose the "FREE FLIGHT" mode. The easiest maps are "THE GREEN" and "SHORT CIRCUIT". Once you learn how to control the drone, you can try the "RACE" mode.
How to learn to fly?
This is the most important section in this guide. Read it carefully.

Set the camera angle
Reducing the camera angle allows you to reduce the flight speed. This is the most important thing for beginners. The basic setting is 30° and it is too large. Use the "Down Arrow" button to set the camera angle to 5°.

If you do not want to do this every time, in "WORKBENCH" in the detailed camera settings you can change the basic camera angle permanently.

As your skills increase, gradually increase the camera angle to fly faster.

Set the flying mode
You change modes by pressing "A" on the keyboard. Try to master the drone in "LEVEL" mode first. In this mode, your drone stabilizes itself. This is a good mode for the first few hours of the game to master the basic drone controls. You shouldn't use this mode for too long.

As soon as you feel ready, your goal is to move on to "ACRO" mode, which is more difficult to master but gives you a lot more possibilities. Every professional pilot flies in "ACRO" mode. Don't worry if your drone falls over at first. After a few hours, you should learn to control it fully.
The easiest race tracks
If you want to try your hand at racing, I recommend three easy tracks for beginners:

1) The Green - 04 Flop Shot
2) Short Circuit - 01 Pole Position
3) Hannover - 01 The biggest yet

Don't worry if the bots fly too fast. After 2 completed races, their level should adjust to yours and you will have a chance to win the race.
The most important thing is not to get discouraged at the beginning!
The first few hours of the game can be difficult, but the most important thing is not to give up. Give yourself time to practice, and you will see that you will make progress every day.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask in comments. 😊

@Bones, this is the normal behavior of the FPV drone. Read this: https://steamcommunity.com/app/410340/discussions/0/3203748171374584461/

i have a battletron controller, but after i arm the drone and let go of the controls it flies up. this is very frustrating, is this normal? i played 40 minutes but this just feels wrong, i tried recalibrating the controller but that did not help. is there an alternative to this game, i dont like it that my controller doesnt work properly and am trying to get a refund.
