Introduction
When I was new to the game, I naively thought that just maxing out a character's bond would unlock some skin, and that’s when you realize you need more items than you had planned. This leaves you not only frustrated but also unsure of how to get them without spending your money on the game’s gacha. (Even if you spend money on the gacha, creating an efficient method to quickly reach the desired bond level is important, and that’s why I’m writing this guide).

Disclaimer: This guide assumes that you already have a character, which you got from the gacha (or not, I love Ichihime lol), with bond level 5 and are just missing the final bond level. Even if you don’t meet these criteria, I’ll explain methods for acquiring items and farming. I believe it could be interesting for those who don’t meet these requirements but still want to increase their bond level, as efficient farming of items can make leveling up your bond much easier.
Bond System
A bond is a meter that shows your level of relationship with a character. You need to give them gifts to increase this relationship.

Each character has a Bond Value that increases by playing games or giving gifts. At max level, all voice lines unlock, the character announces yakus, and you can bond them to unlock a skin and 3 extra emotes.

Explanation
To unlock all the final levels of the bonds, 10 elemental spheres are required (5 of each type), a special gift that matches the character's preferences, 100 stardust, and 10 wishing stones. Below, I will explain the items and ways to obtain them.

Wishing stones

Wishing stones are the hardest items to get as a free-to-play player because they only drop when you get a duplicate character. But how do you get a duplicate character if you're playing free-to-play (without a lot of luck, lol)? Because of questions like this, there are some alternatives to obtain these items for free. In my opinion, the easiest way to get Wishing stones is by doing summons with scrolls. There are a few free ways to obtain scrolls, and I’ll list them below.

Events
Events are great for farming summon scrolls because (usually) you can get 1 to 2 per event if you reach their final rewards (which isn’t too hard if you play at least one or two matches a day trying to complete the tasks. If you're only logging in to farm the event, I recommend playing 3-player East matches, as they are faster compared to the others).

E-mails
During events, collabs, or special dates, Catfood sometimes sends reward emails that contain 1 to 2 tickets, which helps you accumulate summons.

Buying Scrolls and Farming Items

In the store, you can buy scrolls using Stardust. Stardust can be obtained by donating items from your gift inventory. There are three types of gifts

Green Bag
1 Stardust
Blue Bag
5 Stardust
Purple Bag
25 Stardust

Where to get Items
You can purchase items in the store using Copper. I don’t recommend the green gifts because they only give you 1 Stardust per item, provide just 200 bond points (which is bad), and if you buy 5 of them, it’s the same as buying one blue gift that gives you 1000 bond points.

Ranked match
You can also get items from ranked match chests starting from the Silver Room. The rewards depend on your position in the matches because you need to farm points to earn them.

If you play and finish in 1st or 2nd place, you earn a lot of points (1st +260, 2nd +130, 3rd +95, 4th +60) and can get a lot of items quickly. The best drops improve as your rank increases (winning higher ranks makes it easier to convert them into Stardust).

P.S.: Casual matches also drop chests.

Gold Chest
Jade Chest
King’s Chest

Events
You can get items by farming in events. Just play them and claim the rewards. each event usually has at least one purple gift and some blue ones.

Emails
As I mentioned above, sometimes you receive emails with rewards due to an event, collab, or special date, and usually along with the summon scrolls they send, you get some item bags, which can vary (based on the ones I’ve received). Although most of them can’t be turned into Stardust, they can help speed up the bond process. The items you’ll want to be lucky enough to receive are the Sunshine Crate and any other purple items.

Contains 1 purple gift of your choice that cannot be converted into Stardust.

Bond level
If you have a level 5 bond, when you play a ranked match, you gain points. When the bar fills up, you can receive an item called 'Bonding Heart.' This heart is equivalent to one blue gift and can be donated for 5 Stardust.

Item Conclusion
You can get a lot of items to bond your character, acquire a good quantity of Stardust, and some summon scrolls. The process isn’t fast since you’re playing for free and buying things has daily limits, but with good focus and a bit of luck, you can get 10 or almost 10 scrolls in a month or two (because you can only buy 5 summon scrolls every 30 days).

I recommend trying to gather 10 scrolls to summon in the gacha, as the chances of getting something better are higher. But since the goal is to increase your bond, there’s no issue in using them little by little, one by one.

Extra Tip
If you already have 10 wishing stones, you can farm items to collect 50 stardust, purchase a purple gift, and try your luck at getting the item you need
Gacha time
At this point, I think you’ve already done 10 pulls on the gacha using the scrolls you got from items. With each gacha pull, you get an item called Faith. This item can be traded for the Wishing Stones without needing to pull a duplicate character to obtain it.
Spheres
At this point, you should already have most of the items needed to complete the bond, with only the spheres remaining. There are 8 types of spheres, which are:

Courage
Will
Honesty
Love
Wisdom
Innocence
Hope
Light

The only way to obtain these spheres is by purchasing them with copper in the shop and dropping from some chests (silver chest, casual chest etc), earning them through events or receiving them via catfood emails. They appear less frequently since there isn’t a specific method to farm them.

These spheres take time to acquire because there’s a daily limit on how many you can buy, and the ones available each day are random. This means you might be unlucky and have to wait longer for the stones you need to show up.

Copper
Since you need to buy some items, it’s good to have Copper. The ways to get Copper are straightforward: just complete the daily missions, farm events, play different game modes (like the Battle of Asura, as it requires Copper to enter and you can either win or lose Copper), and participate in Ichihime’s Mahjong Classroom.
Summing It All Up
In summary, the way to farm would be:
Extra Content (Paid method)
It's no secret that if you spend money on the game, making bonds becomes much easier, whether through the items you get from 10 pulls or by getting duplicate characters. However, there are advantages you might not know about, which I will explain throughout this section.

Skins, characters, or effects are all optional. If you really like this game, I strongly recommend supporting it in any way you can because it's one of the best Mahjong servers out there.

Fortune Charm

It's like a subscription where you receive 300 jade immediately, 60 jade per day for 30 days, and I believe it's the best cost-benefit option you can get while spending little and still having a chance to get new characters and items. All you have to do is login in the game every day and be patient, and you can do a 10-pull for just $5. It's the cheapest way to get jade in the game.

VIP Points
VIP points are earned by spending real money in the game. I don't have the exact data on how many points you get per dollar spent, but it's good to know they exist because spending money in the game gives you some benefits when building character bonds, such as increasing the purchase limits for items in the store, gifts you can give to your character etc.

VIP Conclusion
The method is the same as I mentioned above the difference is that paying gives you clear advantages in getting the items you want and leveling up your characters. All you can do is focus on trying to obtain the desired purple items by spending your money.

Conclusion
The method isn’t perfect, but it’s what I’ve developed from playing this game for quite some time. I use these tactics to suffer less with farming characters and bonds. It’s a process that takes some time due to the daily purchase limits and the limit on how many gifts you can give to your character.

Farming efficiently in this game isn’t a quick process (only if you spend money or are playing at high ranks, dropping good chests), because skins are optional, but the fact that there’s a free-to-play way to get them is already a motivator to at least try. I hope you liked it, and please consider leaving a review and favoriting. Bye Bye Nyaa~

Oh yeah not just Rons, the amount of times I see people Tsumo is insane. I wish the best for you too! Also, you got a pretty rad profile.

I just play for fun too. Since the gacha is optional, it takes a while to get the items, but if you're patient, you’ll get them little by little. Wishing you the best and good luck! I hope you can enjoy the game again, and don’t forget to play for fun (some days you take so many Rons that it gets frustrating lol)

Haha, I'm really glad. I played Mahjong Souls way before it was on Steam during the pandemic. The only reason why I did was to kill time. After pandemic started fading away and the online lessons too, I didn't touched the game anymore. Recently though, I got back into it and I'm trying to play the game properly, even cashed in the game to get a music but I failed to realise that you could exchange it in the shop if you had enough credits lmao. But that's why I'm trying to take the game a little seriously now, grind wise and knowledge wise. So I'm happy that we both get a positive by the end of things.

No worries, take it easy. I don’t update frequently because I wait for at least five new characters to be released before making updates. The focus is more on the method I wrote rather than the specific requirements for each character (since you can check that directly in the game if you have them). You're the first person to ask about an update, and that actually motivated me to do it now. Hope it helped
Zyph Mar 4 @ 12:50pm
Ohh I see. That makes sense. I would do that, but I've bookmarked this page for future references. No pressure to update, I appreciate the current lineup, in the future if there isn't someone listed here I'll probably plop down to MahjongSoulDB. Cheers mate.
坂本  [author] Mar 4 @ 12:48pm
There are websites that serve as databases for Mahjong Soul (just search for MahjongsoulDB), but not all of them are complete. For example, the Casual Chest box I couldn't find the original image to include in the guide, so I extracted it from the game using tools
Zyph Mar 4 @ 12:44pm
A weird question, but I am curious, how do you actually know what items are for who? It's pretty impressive considering that I can't find it anywhere online xD
Zyph Mar 4 @ 12:40pm
Wow thanks a ton! That was really quick response wise and edit wise! I'm sorry to make you do it on the spot but I really appreciate it
坂本  [author] Mar 4 @ 12:22pm
updated 👍
坂本  [author] Mar 4 @ 11:27am
I admit I'm feeling lazy to update it, but since there aren't that many characters, I'll see if I can do it by later today
