From February 19th, 1945 to March 26th 1945 the island of Iwo Jima became the scene of one of the bloodiest battles in human history. On this small isolated island south of Japan, two nations made war with each other in an unforgiving fierce struggle for survival. In five weeks of bloody combat, more than 28,000 casualties are suffered by American forces while the Japanese suffer more than 18,000 killed, wounded, missing or captured. It is the only battle in the Pacific War in which the American casualties exceeded those of the Japanese. This campaign is dedicated to the memory of the veterans and combatants both living and dead of both sides who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima.
