Xbox controller emulator
First, you will need an Xbox controller emulator. I used DS4Windows[github.com], but any other emulator should work as well.
Optional Step: custom xinput1_3.dll file
Optional Step: Add files from this link [community.pcgamingwiki.com] to the root folder of AC2 before you launch x360ce for the first time. With this xinput1_3.dll file, the program will throw fewer error messages upon launch and might prompt you to update the added x360ce.ini file later.
Launch sequence
Every time you play, follow these steps:
1. Launch Xbox controller emulator of your choice.

2. Launch x360ce [www.x360ce.com] from the root of the AC2 folder. The first time, it will prompt you to create necessary files. If you followed the optional step, it might prompt you to update the existing file. Allow it to proceed. I used the 32-bit version.

3. Launch the game and make sure the Steam Input is disabled.

4. Once in the menu, navigate to Options > Customize controls.

5. At the bottom, there will be a field to choose the input method. Choose either Xbox360 controller or wireless controller, whichever lets you use the D-pad.

6. Once the D-pad is working in the game, enable the Steam Input. The first time, you'll need to choose a layout from the list of available ones.

7. When the O (B) button lets you exit the controller settings, you'll know that it worked.

8. Don't forget to disable the Steam Input once you exit the game or before the next time you launch it. Otherwise, the controller option won't appear in the settings, and you'll have to restart the game.
