Tools you need for this process ⚙️
  • .exe Resource Editor
    Resource Hacker[angusj.com]

  • Program to make Multi-res .ico files
    IcoFX[icofx.ro]
Using Resource Hacker to get the original Gmod .ico file 📝
    Step 1)
  • Open Resource Hacker and open gmod.exe located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod, open the Icon Group folder and go to the file labeled 101 : 1033 right click and press Save *.ico resource and save it somewhere on your computer.
Resize custom Icons to fit to Gmod's original icons 🖼️
    Step 2)
  • Create Your Base Icon, you can start with a high-quality 256x256 icon. This will be the largest version of your custom icon. Resize your base icon to other sizes required by Gmod: 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24 and 16x16.

  • You can use any image editors to resize them, you should know how to resize a image. All you have to do is take your base image (256x256) and resize it with the image editors resize tool and save them as a .png. You should label them something like this GmodCustomIco256x256, GmodCustomIco48x48, ect. So you don't get confused.
Using IcoFX to replace the original icons with your new ones 🚚
    Step 3)
  • Open the default reference Garry's Mod icon file. You’ll see a list of icons organized by their respective color depths. I chose to replace the icons in the 32-bit color depth section and left the others unchanged.

  • Make sure you have the correct default icon selected that matches the size of your custom icon you're replacing. Next, click on the tool icon (highlighted by the red square). This will prompt you to open a .ico file. Navigate to your custom icon file of the same size, select it, and it will replace the default icon.

  • Repeat this process for all the icons you want to replace. Once done, go to File < Save As, save the file under a new name to avoid overwriting the original reference/default icon file, and proceed to the next step.
Using Resource Hacker to replace the icons in the gmod.exe 📦
    Step 4)
  • First, navigate to the directory where Garry's Mod is installed on your computer. Typically, this will be in the Steam folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod) Inside this folder, locate the gmod.exe.
  • Launch Resource Hacker. Once the program is open, click File > Open and browse to the gmod.exe file. In the Resource Hacker window, the file structure will appear in the left-hand panel. Expand the Icon folder, which contains all the icon resources used by the application. Under Icon, you'll see individual icon resources listed, such as 1 : 1033, 2 : 1033, and so on. These represent different icon sizes and color depths. Luckily we don't need to do them one by one! Yay.

  • The Icon Group is where all the icons are combined, typically labeled as 101 : 1033. The Icon Group contains multiple icon sizes, like 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, and 16x16, that are used for different parts of the Windows UI. Right-click on the Icon Group > 101 entry and select Replace Resource. In the Replace Resource window, click Open file with new icon... and select your multi-resolution .ico file (which should contain the 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, and 16x16 sizes). Resource Hacker will automatically update the icon group with your custom icon.

  • Once the icon is replaced, click File > Save to overwrite the original executable, or use Save As to create a backup of the original file.
Voilà! 👍
This should be your final look with the custom icon. It will be different then mine but should look like this!
Misc Information ⬇️
Reverting the custom icons to the default ones
  • Simply use the backup .exe if you created one that houses the default icons and simply replace that inside the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod folder.
  • If you didn't create one, don't fret you can still be saved. Go to Garry's Mod in your library < Properties < Installed files < Verity integrity of installed files. And let that complete.
    Support for other color depths
  • If you want to add support or need to for other color depths its good to include them in the multi-size ico file. You will need to reduce the color depths in any image editor. for 16 bit colors use 4-bit depth and for 256 colors use 8-bit. Do this for every image or as needed. Then repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 above.
