STEP 1: Downloading the files

STEP 2: Setting up the server
  • Head over to the Left 4 Dead 2 game folder and paste the downloaded archive there.

  • Extract the archive.

  • You should end up with 1 folder and 1 batch file.

STEP 3: Giving yourself (and others) admin access
  • This step is optional as the server has admin menu where you are able to kill players, change the map to a specific chapter etc... Therefore admin access is needed.
You can skip this step if you prefer a vanilla experience, with no "cheating".

  • You need to get your steam ID. In order to do that, just launch a singleplayer map then type in console status

  • Copy the ID, and head back to your main game folder

  • Open these folders: 8_Players_Server\addons\sourcemod\configs

  • Open admins_simple.ini file (you can use notepad)

  • At the very bottom, add your steam ID between " ", and follow it by "99:z", as shown in the example below

  • In case of many admins, you can add the name of each one as a comment by following the specific line with // then the name. Example: "STEAM_0:1:16" "99:z" //Example
STEP 4: Subscribing to the 8 Player Lobby addon
  • Both you and your friends need to be subscribed to this addon in order to be able to play together

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2276071285
STEP 5: Playing!
  • Head back to your main game folder, and open the 8_Players_Server_Launcher.bat file. You should be greeted with this window

  • Press any key to initiate file transfer. What that file does is to copy the content of the 8_Players_Server folder inside the target folders, instead of you doing it manually.

  • The game should open afterwards, and you should get this warning:

  • Just ignore it and press OK. It will be gone the next time you open the game via Steam instead of the 8_Players_Server_Launcher.bat file.

  • Head to the Mutation tab, and hit "Change mutation"

  • Select "8 player lobby mutation"

  • Create a Lobby, and choose whichever map you desire. It will work on custom campaigns too.

  • Make sure the server type is Local Server

  • Click on "Start the game". Please note that you can use the server with 1 to 8 players, so it is possible to use it alone in case you want extra bot help :3

  • And you're all set! You can now kill some zombies. As you can see in the picture below, there are 7 bots and 1 human (me), plus there will be enough medkits for everyone.

  • In order to use the admin panel, type in chat !admin. There you can use the number keys (which are located on top of the letter keys, not the numpad ones) to navigate the menu.

  • Head to the "Player commands (1) and you will find bunch of stuff, such as Slaying (in case someone gets stuck), Kicking (for trollers) etc..."

  • In case someone dies and there are alive bots, they can either wait for the "Takeover" window to pop-up, or write in chat "!takeover". What this does is that it allows them to control another bot, instead of spectating until someone finds a respawn cabinet or defib.

  • In the example below, I Slayed myself, then took control of another bot. Please note that you can't pick the bot you want to control (don't be greedy :3)

  • In order to close the server, simply close the game normally, the batch file will delete the files it added previously, leaving you with an intact game and you will be able to play in VAC secured servers afterwards.

IMPORTANT NOTES
  • In case of a game crash, or PC crash, the "8_Players_Server_Launcher.bat" file will not remove the files, and upon your next launch of the game, you will not be able to play in VAC secured server, unless you delete the files.
To do that, all what you have to do is reopen the "8_Players_Server_Launcher.bat", wait for the game to open, then close it normally, and you're good to go.

  • Tank HP is multiplied by how many players are there, so the more players, the more HP (for a fair game :3)

  • This server can be used alongside the "Hide and Seek (8 players version)" addon. Give it a try, it will be super fun with 8 players.

  • Patch notes:
  • Added "respawn" command, which can be found in admin menu (Server Commands section)

How do I restart the map?

@TheDoctor Hello. To be able to use those commands, you need admin access. Also, make sure you start the desired command with "sm_cvar" then follow it with what you need (sm_cvar sv_maxplayers 5), then restart the map.
As for sprays, I have no idea because I was able to use them when I made the tutorial as you can see in the screenshots above.
Does your game load the default sprays or what?

@cereal killer also im noticing sprays are always disabled everytime i start playing. Where can i change that setting?
TheDoctor Dec 4, 2024 @ 10:14am
Thank you @cereal killer! i was having trouble lately with sourcemod. Campaigns would not load and crash. I have a question: i used to type commands in the console just as: maxplayers, l4d_survivor_limit, sv_maxplayers to limit the quantity of players who could join and not have bots. How can i do this? it doesn´t seem to work. Is there any other way? Thank you very much for this once again!
