Consistent Sword Parry

Hi everyone!

I've made a quick video guide about Parrying, one of my favourite contextual abilities that is often overlooked. Let me know if this guide was helpful! You can find an in-game hint on The Deadmen, here's a deeper look at the mechanic.

Parry Basics
Parry is a contextual ability that triggers when you charge your strike a moment before receiving a physical damage. You can parry any melee strikes, jumping enemies (expect for the heavies) and arrows.

The two most important things to keep in mind:
  • Hold your attack a moment before taking a hit. For arrows or jumping enemies, a moment before a potential collision.
  • Keep holding your strike to commit to the moment you choose.
If you get your timing right, you'll see a blocking animation and knock the enemy down - a perfect parry!

If you release your attack at the same time as your enemy, you may avoid the damage, but your enemy won't be hit and you'll lose your weapon. Only by holding fearlessly in front of the incoming damage do you declare your intention to parry. I like to think of it as taking a fighting stance.
Post Parry
Once you've performed a perfect parry, you can continue to hold your sword in a blocking position. This gives you a chance to block another physical attack BUT you'll drop your sword.
  • The second block is useful if you are swarmed, sometimes it will save your life by chance.
  • The dropping sword could be your chance to use it as a new dash point to get out of a tight fight.
Other Weapons
You can parry with any pickable weapon, but there are differences.
  • You can parry with a bow, but you will drop the bow every time you parry.
  • Parrying with a spear is the easiest as it has the longest charging phase.
